Project – Impact of Social Media Health Campaigns on Public Awareness of STDs Among Youth
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are among the major public health problems affecting people across the world, especially youths and young adults. STDs are infections that are mainly spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Some common sexually transmitted diseases include gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, herpes, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis B, and human papillomavirus (HPV). These diseases can lead to serious health complications such as infertility, reproductive health problems, chronic illness, emotional trauma, and death if they are not properly treated.
According to the World Health Organization, millions of new sexually transmitted infection cases are recorded every year globally, with young people accounting for a large percentage of infections. In Nigeria, the increasing rate of sexually transmitted diseases among youths has become a major concern to healthcare professionals, government agencies, parents, and community leaders. Factors such as peer pressure, poor sexual health education, poverty, substance abuse, multiple sexual partners, early sexual activity, and unsafe sexual practices contribute significantly to the spread of STDs among youths.
Youths are highly vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases because of their lifestyle, curiosity, exposure to social influences, and inadequate knowledge of sexual and reproductive health. Many young people engage in risky sexual behaviors without fully understanding the consequences associated with sexually transmitted infections. In some cases, youths avoid discussing sexual health matters openly due to fear, shame, cultural beliefs, or lack of proper guidance from parents and society. This often results in misinformation and poor health-seeking behavior.
Public awareness is one of the most important strategies for controlling the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. When youths are properly informed about the causes, symptoms, modes of transmission, prevention, and treatment of STDs, they are more likely to adopt healthy sexual behaviors and seek medical help when necessary. Health education campaigns therefore play a vital role in improving public knowledge and reducing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among youths.
In recent years, social media has become one of the most powerful tools for communication and information sharing in modern society. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube are widely used by youths for communication, entertainment, education, and social interaction. The increasing use of smartphones and internet services has made social media easily accessible to many young people, thereby making it an effective platform for health communication and awareness campaigns.
Social media health campaigns involve the use of digital platforms to educate and inform the public about health issues. These campaigns may include videos, health tips, live discussions, infographics, hashtags, online seminars, and awareness posts aimed at promoting healthy behaviors and disease prevention. Health organizations, government agencies, healthcare professionals, and non-governmental organizations now use social media to create awareness about sexually transmitted diseases and encourage preventive measures such as abstinence, condom use, regular testing, and early treatment.
One major advantage of social media health campaigns is their ability to reach a large audience quickly and at a relatively low cost. Unlike traditional media such as newspapers, radio, and television, social media allows users to interact directly with health information by commenting, sharing, asking questions, and participating in discussions. This interactive nature of social media has increased its effectiveness in health promotion among youths who spend a significant amount of time online.
Furthermore, social media campaigns have helped reduce stigma associated with sexually transmitted diseases by encouraging open discussions about sexual health issues. Many online campaigns provide confidential and anonymous platforms where youths can access health information without fear of discrimination or embarrassment. This has increased awareness and encouraged more young people to seek testing, counseling, and treatment services.
Despite the increasing use of social media for health campaigns, sexually transmitted diseases continue to affect many youths. Some youths still engage in risky sexual practices due to poor understanding of health messages, peer influence, misinformation, and exposure to inappropriate online content. In addition, false or misleading information shared on social media may negatively influence public understanding of sexually transmitted diseases and their prevention.
Another concern is that not all youths have equal access to reliable internet services or accurate online health information. Some young people may misinterpret health messages or fail to verify the authenticity of information obtained from social media platforms. Moreover, cultural beliefs, stigma, and fear of discrimination continue to discourage some youths from discussing sexual health matters openly or participating in health campaigns.
The increasing dependence on social media for communication and education makes it important to examine its impact on public awareness of sexually transmitted diseases among youths. Understanding how social media health campaigns influence awareness and preventive behaviors will help healthcare providers, policy makers, and health educators improve strategies for promoting sexual health education among young people. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the impact of social media health campaigns on public awareness of sexually transmitted diseases among youths.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Sexually transmitted diseases continue to pose serious health challenges among youths despite various efforts made by government agencies, healthcare professionals, and non-governmental organizations to reduce their spread through health education and awareness campaigns. Many youths still lack adequate knowledge about the causes, symptoms, transmission, prevention, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. As a result, risky sexual behaviors such as unprotected sex, multiple sexual partnerships, and self-medication remain common among young people.
The rapid growth of social media has created new opportunities for health communication and awareness campaigns. Health organizations increasingly use social media platforms to educate youths about sexually transmitted diseases and encourage healthy sexual behaviors. However, despite these efforts, sexually transmitted diseases remain prevalent among many youths, raising concerns about the actual effectiveness of social media health campaigns in improving public awareness and behavioral change.
One major problem is that many youths are exposed to false and misleading information about sexually transmitted diseases on social media platforms. Some users share myths, misconceptions, and unverified health advice that may confuse young people and discourage them from seeking professional medical help. In some cases, inaccurate online information leads to poor understanding of sexually transmitted diseases and risky health decisions.
Another problem is that some youths may not pay adequate attention to health campaigns shared on social media because they mainly use these platforms for entertainment and social interaction. Even when they are exposed to health messages, some may ignore or fail to practice the recommended preventive measures. Furthermore, peer pressure, cultural beliefs, fear of stigma, and lack of parental guidance continue to affect youths’ attitudes toward sexual health education.
There is also limited research focusing specifically on the impact of social media health campaigns on public awareness of sexually transmitted diseases among youths. Most previous studies have focused on general social media usage or HIV/AIDS awareness without adequately examining how social media campaigns influence STD awareness and preventive behaviors among young people.
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the impact of social media health campaigns on public awareness of sexually transmitted diseases among youths and determine whether social media campaigns effectively improve sexual health awareness and preventive practices among young people.
