INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains a fundamental sector of the Nigerian economy, providing food, employment, income and raw materials for agro-industrial activities. Within the agricultural sector, vegetable production occupies an important position because vegetables contribute significantly to household nutrition, food security, employment and income generation. Vegetables such as tomato, pepper, okra, amaranthus, cucumber, leafy vegetables and other horticultural crops are cultivated by smallholder farmers and supplied to urban and rural markets. The importance of vegetable production is particularly evident around major urban centres such as Lagos, where a large and growing population creates sustained demand for fresh produce.

The production of vegetables, however, does not automatically translate into equivalent income for farmers. Between harvesting and final consumption, considerable quantities of fresh produce may deteriorate or become unsuitable for sale. This phenomenon is broadly described as post-harvest loss. Post-harvest losses include quantitative losses, such as reductions in the physical quantity available for sale, and qualitative losses, such as deterioration in appearance, texture, nutritional quality, freshness and market value. FAO has long recognised that food losses can occur at different stages from harvesting through handling, storage, transportation, processing and marketing.

Post-harvest losses are especially significant for fruits and vegetables because these commodities are highly perishable. Fresh vegetables contain substantial amounts of water and remain biologically active after harvest. Respiration, transpiration, microbial activity and physiological deterioration continue after the produce is removed from the field. FAO explains that factors such as high temperature, water loss and physical injury can accelerate deterioration and shorten the post-harvest life of fresh produce.

The global significance of post-harvest losses remains substantial. FAO’s latest Sustainable Development Goal food-loss estimates indicate that approximately 13.3 percent of food produced globally was lost between the post-harvest stage and before retail in 2023. Fruits and vegetables recorded the highest commodity-group loss rate, estimated at 25.4 percent in 2023, reflecting their high perishability and demanding handling requirements. Sub-Saharan Africa recorded a regional food-loss level of about 23 percent.

The situation is particularly important for developing countries where agricultural production is dominated by smallholder farmers who may have limited access to appropriate storage, transportation, processing and marketing infrastructure. Mpagalile and Odjo (2024) note that post-harvest losses are particularly problematic for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and identify inadequate technologies, poor post-harvest management practices and weaknesses in food-supply systems among the important factors contributing to losses.

Vegetable farmers are particularly vulnerable because fresh vegetables have short shelf lives. Unlike cereals, which can often be dried and stored for extended periods, many vegetables require prompt marketing or appropriate preservation. When farmers cannot sell their produce quickly, deterioration may occur before buyers are found. This can discourage investment in vegetable production and undermine the livelihoods of farming households.

There is therefore a need for empirical research that examines the types and causes of post-harvest losses, the management practices used by vegetable farmers and the relationship between the losses experienced and farmers’ income.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine post-harvest losses and their effects on the income of vegetable farmers in selected farming communities in Lagos State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Research Hypothesis

1.7 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to vegetable farmers because it will provide information on the major causes of post-harvest losses and their implications for farm income. 1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Chapter Three will present the research methodology, including the research design, study area, population, sample size, sampling procedure, research instrument, validity and reliability, data collection procedures and methods of data analysis. Chapter Four will present, analyse and discuss the data collected in relation to the research questions and hypothesis. Chapter Five will provide the summary, conclusion, recommendations and suggestions for further research.
