Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Good Friday is one of the most solemn and significant days in the Christian calendar. Observed annually on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, it commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary and His sacrificial death for the redemption of humanity (Carson, 2010). The day is marked by reflection, prayer, fasting, and acts of penance, reminding believers of the profound love of God demonstrated through Christ’s suffering and death (Wright, 2012).

Historically, the observance of Good Friday has been central to Christian liturgical traditions. In the early church, believers gathered to recall Christ’s Passion, emphasizing both the human and divine dimensions of His sacrifice (Pelikan, 2005). Over the centuries, Good Friday has evolved into not only a time for communal worship but also personal introspection, prompting believers to examine their faith, moral conduct, and relationship with God (Marshall, 2006).

The significance of Good Friday extends beyond ritual observance. It embodies theological, spiritual, and ethical dimensions of Christian life. Theologically, it affirms the belief in atonement, highlighting Jesus’ death as a pivotal act in God’s plan for salvation (Stott, 2006). Spiritually, it encourages believers to meditate on suffering, sacrifice, and redemption, fostering personal growth, resilience, and humility. Ethically, the teachings and reflections inspired by Good Friday guide believers in practicing compassion, forgiveness, and service toward others (McGrath, 2012).

In contemporary Christian communities, Good Friday continues to play an essential role in shaping believers’ worldview. Despite its importance, there is limited empirical research exploring how Good Friday influences the daily spiritual lives and moral conduct of believers. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the significance of Good Friday in the life of a believer.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Christian doctrine places immense importance on the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, which Good Friday commemorates. However, in contemporary society, many believers may observe Good Friday superficially, focusing on rituals without fully engaging in its spiritual and moral implications. Reports suggest a trend where public observance is more cultural than spiritual, with some Christians attending services without personal reflection or transformation (Meyer, 2010).

Additionally, modern challenges such as secularization, commercialization of religious events, and competing societal priorities have affected the depth of Good Friday observance among believers (Turner, 2014). Many fail to internalize the theological and ethical lessons of Christ’s sacrifice, limiting the day’s potential to influence character development, empathy, and community service. This raises concerns about the erosion of core Christian values and the weakening of personal spiritual discipline.

Furthermore, there is a lack of localized studies that investigate how Good Friday impacts the personal, social, and spiritual lives of believers, particularly in contemporary African contexts where Christianity remains a major religion. Without empirical evidence, religious leaders, educators, and policy makers are limited in their ability to develop strategies that enhance meaningful observance and deepen understanding of the day’s significance (Achebe, 2015).

Thus, this study aims to investigate the significance of Good Friday in the life of a believer, exploring how its observance affects personal faith, moral conduct, and engagement with Christian teachings in everyday life.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objectives of this study are:

1. To examine the theological significance of Good Friday in the life of a believer.

3. To investigate the challenges affecting meaningful observance of Good Friday in contemporary society.

The geographical focus may be limited to urban and semi-urban church communities to capture contemporary observance patterns.

1.7 Definition of Terms

1. Good Friday: Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday, observed by Christians worldwide to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death for the redemption of humanity (Carson, 2010). It is a day of solemn reflection, prayer, and remembrance of Christ’s passion.
2. Believer: A believer refers to an individual who professes faith in Jesus Christ and actively participates in the teachings, practices, and moral principles of Christianity (McGrath, 2012). In this study, it specifically refers to Christians who observe Good Friday.
3. Observance: Observance refers to the act of practicing religious rituals, customs, or traditions, including attending services, prayer, fasting, or meditative reflection, in recognition of a sacred day or event (Stott, 2006).
4. Theological Significance: Theological significance relates to the spiritual, doctrinal, and religious meaning attached to an event or practice within a faith tradition. In this study, it refers to how Good Friday underscores the Christian doctrine of atonement and salvation through Christ’s death.
5. Spiritual Impact: Spiritual impact is the influence that religious practices, beliefs, or events have on a person’s inner life, moral conduct, and personal relationship with God (Wright, 2012).
6. Moral Conduct: Moral conduct is the behavior of individuals guided by ethical and religious principles, including honesty, compassion, forgiveness, and service to others (Pelikan, 2005).
7. Sacrifice: Sacrifice, in a Christian context, refers to giving up something valuable or enduring suffering in obedience to God, modeled most profoundly by Jesus Christ’s death on Good Friday (Turner, 2014).
8. Redemption: Redemption is the act of being saved from sin or its consequences through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, which restores humanity’s relationship with God (Marshall, 2006).
9. Communal Worship: Communal worship refers to collective religious activities conducted within a congregation or community of believers, such as church services, prayers, and liturgies on Good Friday (Geoffrey, 2011).
