INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Faith and healing have remained central themes within African Christianity, particularly within Pentecostal and charismatic traditions where spiritual experiences, divine intervention, and supernatural encounters occupy significant positions in religious life. The relationship between faith and healing is rooted in the Christian belief that God possesses the power to restore human health through spiritual means. Throughout Christian history, healing has been associated with Jesus Christ’s ministry, where accounts of physical, emotional, and spiritual restoration formed an important part of his public ministry. This biblical understanding has continued to influence Christian approaches to sickness and healing across different cultural contexts (Kärkkäinen, 2016).

In African societies, understandings of illness and healing have historically involved complex relationships between physical, spiritual, social, and supernatural realities. Traditional African worldviews generally perceive health as a condition of harmony between individuals, communities, ancestors, spiritual forces, and the natural environment. Consequently, sickness is often interpreted beyond biological explanations and may be associated with spiritual causes, social conflicts, moral failures, or supernatural influences (Mbiti, 1990). This worldview has significantly shaped African Christian approaches to healing, particularly within churches that integrate biblical teachings with culturally familiar understandings of health and spirituality.

The encounter between Christianity and African traditional worldviews produced unique expressions of Christian faith, including approaches to healing that emphasise prayer, spiritual authority, divine intervention, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Unlike some Western Christian traditions that have historically placed greater emphasis on medical explanations of illness, many African Christian communities maintain a strong belief that God actively intervenes in human conditions, including sickness and suffering. According to Bediako (1995), African Christianity has developed through the interaction between Christian beliefs and African cultural experiences, producing theological expressions that address the existential concerns of African communities.

Pentecostal Christianity has played a particularly important role in shaping contemporary African approaches to faith and healing. Pentecostal theology emphasises the present activity of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, miracles, prophecy, deliverance, and divine healing. Anderson (2014) explains that Pentecostalism places strong emphasis on personal religious experience and the expectation that supernatural manifestations continue within contemporary Christian life. As a result, healing practices have become significant features of Pentecostal worship and ministry.

The Pentecostal understanding of healing is largely based on the belief that Jesus Christ’s ministry included healing the sick and that believers can experience divine restoration through faith, prayer, and spiritual intervention. Many Pentecostal churches teach that healing is part of God’s provision for humanity and may occur through prayer, anointing with oil, laying on of hands, fasting, deliverance sessions, and prophetic declarations. According to Yong (2011), Pentecostal spirituality emphasises embodied experiences of faith where believers encounter God through practical and transformative experiences, including healing.

In Nigeria, faith healing occupies an important position within Pentecostal Christianity because of the widespread influence of Pentecostal churches and their emphasis on spiritual solutions to human challenges. Nigerian Pentecostal churches have developed healing ministries that attract large numbers of worshippers seeking solutions to physical illnesses, emotional struggles, financial difficulties, and spiritual problems. Ojo (2006) notes that Nigerian Pentecostal movements have expanded rapidly because they address everyday concerns through messages of hope, empowerment, deliverance, and divine intervention.

The growth of Pentecostal healing ministries in Nigeria is closely connected to the social realities experienced by many Nigerians. Limited access to affordable healthcare, poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and social uncertainty have encouraged many individuals to seek spiritual alternatives alongside medical treatment. In this context, healing practices within Pentecostal churches provide not only religious experiences but also emotional support, community belonging, and psychological hope for individuals facing difficult circumstances.

Pentecostal healing practices in Nigeria occur through various religious activities, including prayer meetings, healing crusades, deliverance services, anointing services, prophetic ministrations, and personal counselling. These practices are often led by pastors, prophets, evangelists, and spiritual leaders who are believed to possess spiritual authority. According to Marshall (2009), Nigerian Pentecostal leaders often function as religious entrepreneurs whose ministries combine spiritual authority, social influence, and practical responses to people’s needs.

The popularity of healing practices within Nigerian Pentecostal churches has attracted significant scholarly attention. Scholars have examined how healing ministries contribute to religious identity, church growth, and social transformation while also exploring questions concerning authenticity, commercialisation, and theological interpretation. Asamoah-Gyadu (2015) argues that African Pentecostal healing practices reflect a worldview where spiritual realities are considered deeply connected to human experiences of suffering and wellbeing.

Healing practices also contribute significantly to the growth and expansion of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. Many churches have developed healing programmes that attract both members and non-members seeking divine intervention. The expectation of miracles and testimonies of healing often strengthen believers’ faith and encourage church participation. According to Ukah (2008), Nigerian Pentecostal churches have developed strong religious networks partly because they provide practical solutions and spiritual interpretations of everyday challenges.

However, faith healing remains a subject of theological and social debate. Supporters argue that healing practices demonstrate God’s continuing power and provide hope, comfort, and restoration to believers. They emphasise that Christian faith does not reject medical treatment but recognises divine healing as an expression of God’s grace. Conversely, critics question some healing practices, particularly where claims of miraculous healing are unverified or where individuals are discouraged from seeking professional medical assistance.

Another concern relates to the commercialisation of healing ministries. Some scholars have criticised certain Pentecostal leaders for exploiting vulnerable individuals through excessive emphasis on miracles, special offerings, and promises of supernatural solutions. Gifford (2004) argues that some forms of African Pentecostalism have developed practices where religious authority and economic interests may become closely connected, creating ethical challenges for Christian ministry.

Despite these debates, faith healing remains an important aspect of African Christianity and continues to influence the religious experiences of millions of believers. The persistence of healing practices demonstrates that many Africans understand health and illness through both physical and spiritual dimensions. Therefore, examining faith and healing within Pentecostal churches provides important insights into African Christian theology, religious practice, and cultural expressions of Christianity.

Although several studies have examined Pentecostalism in Africa and Nigeria, limited empirical attention has been given to the specific relationship between faith and healing practices within selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on church growth, prosperity theology, or Pentecostal expansion, leaving gaps regarding the theological foundations, methods, perceived effectiveness, and challenges associated with healing practices.

Therefore, this study examines“The Concept of Faith and Healing in African Christianity: A Study of Healing Practices in Selected Pentecostal Churches in Nigeria.” The study seeks to explore the meaning of faith healing, the practices employed by Pentecostal churches, believers’ perceptions of healing experiences, and the implications of these practices for contemporary African Christianity.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Faith healing remains one of the most prominent and debated aspects of contemporary African Christianity, particularly within Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. Many Pentecostal congregations organise healing services, prayer meetings, deliverance programmes, and miracle sessions where believers seek divine intervention for physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. Despite the popularity of these practices, questions remain regarding their theological foundation, practical effectiveness, and implications for Christian faith.

One major problem is the limited understanding of how Pentecostal churches conceptualise the relationship between faith and healing. While many believers view healing as an expression of God’s power and compassion, different interpretations exist regarding whether healing depends on individual faith, divine sovereignty, spiritual authority, or specific religious practices.

Another challenge concerns the increasing popularity of healing ministries and their influence on Christian belief and practice. Many Nigerians participate in healing programmes seeking solutions to illnesses and personal difficulties. However, there is limited empirical evidence regarding how these experiences shape believers’ understanding of faith, spirituality, and their relationship with God.

Furthermore, concerns have emerged regarding the authenticity and ethical dimensions of some healing practices. While genuine healing ministries may provide spiritual encouragement and support, critics argue that some individuals exploit vulnerable people through false claims, financial demands, or discouragement of medical treatment. These concerns create the need for academic investigation into the nature and practices of faith healing within Pentecostal churches.

Another problem is the limited integration between spiritual healing practices and modern healthcare approaches. Although many believers combine prayer with medical treatment, some cases have raised concerns about situations where individuals rely exclusively on spiritual interventions for serious medical conditions. This creates debates concerning the appropriate relationship between faith healing and healthcare.

Additionally, existing literature on African Pentecostalism has focused extensively on church growth, prosperity theology, and religious expansion, while fewer studies have examined healing practices as a distinct theological and social phenomenon. This creates a research gap regarding the beliefs, methods, experiences, and implications of healing ministries within Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

Therefore, the problem of this study is the insufficient understanding of the concept of faith and healing within African Christianity, particularly regarding healing practices among selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the theological foundations, practices, experiences, and challenges associated with Pentecostal healing ministries.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the concept of faith and healing in African Christianity with particular reference to healing practices in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. examine the theological understanding of faith and healing within African Christianity;
2. identify the major healing practices adopted by selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria;
3. investigate the relationship between believers’ faith and their perception of divine healing experiences;
4. assess the influence of Pentecostal healing practices on believers’ spiritual lives and religious commitment;
5. examine the challenges and controversies associated with faith healing practices among Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What is the theological understanding of faith and healing within African Christianity?
2. What are the major healing practices adopted by selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria?
3. What relationship exists between believers’ faith and their perception of divine healing experiences?
4. How do Pentecostal healing practices influence believers’ spiritual lives and religious commitment?
5. What challenges and controversies are associated with faith healing practices among Pentecostal churches in Nigeria?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will guide the study:

H₀: Faith healing practices have no significant influence on believers’ spiritual experiences and religious commitment in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because faith and healing remain central aspects of African Christian spirituality, particularly within Pentecostal traditions where believers often interpret health, illness, and recovery through spiritual perspectives. Examining healing practices provides important understanding of how African Christians integrate biblical teachings, cultural beliefs, and personal religious experiences in responding to human suffering.

The study will be beneficial to Pentecostal church leaders, pastors, and ministers by providing insights into the theological foundations and practical implications of healing ministries. The findings may assist church leaders in developing responsible healing practices that maintain biblical principles while addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of believers.

The study will also be valuable to theological institutions, seminaries, and Christian educators by contributing to academic discussions on African Christian theology, Pentecostal spirituality, and the relationship between faith and human wellbeing. It will provide useful material for students and scholars studying African Christianity, missiology, pastoral theology, and religious studies.

Furthermore, the study will benefit believers and members of Pentecostal churches by encouraging deeper understanding of faith healing practices. By examining the relationship between faith, prayer, and healing experiences, the study may help Christians develop balanced perspectives regarding divine healing and spiritual growth.

The research will contribute to the understanding of African indigenous expressions of Christianity by highlighting how cultural interpretations of illness and healing interact with Christian beliefs. Bediako (1995) argues that African Christianity develops through meaningful engagement between Christian faith and African cultural experiences. Therefore, studying healing practices provides insight into how Christianity is expressed within African contexts.

The study will also be useful to healthcare professionals, religious organisations, and policymakers by providing understanding of how religious beliefs influence health-seeking behaviours among Christian communities. Since many Nigerians combine medical treatment with prayer and spiritual practices, understanding these perspectives can encourage constructive relationships between religious and healthcare institutions.

Additionally, the study will contribute to discussions on the ethical dimensions of Christian healing ministries. As debates continue regarding authenticity, commercialisation, and accountability within some healing practices, this research may provide evidence-based insights into how Pentecostal churches can maintain responsible approaches to spiritual healing.

The study will also expand existing academic literature on Pentecostalism in Nigeria. While previous studies have examined Pentecostal growth, prosperity theology, and religious movements, fewer studies have focused specifically on faith healing practices as a theological and social phenomenon. This research therefore contributes to filling an important gap in African Christian scholarship.

Finally, the study will serve as a reference source for future researchers interested in examining religion, spirituality, healing, healthcare beliefs, and the relationship between Christianity and African cultural experiences.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on “The Concept of Faith and Healing in African Christianity: A Study of Healing Practices in Selected Pentecostal Churches in Nigeria.”

Thematically, the study examines the concept of faith healing as the major focus, with emphasis on Pentecostal theological understanding, healing practices, believers’ experiences, and the implications of healing ministries within African Christianity.

The study examines faith and healing through the following dimensions:

• biblical understanding of divine healing;
• Pentecostal theology of faith and miracles;
• prayer and healing practices;
• laying on of hands and anointing services;
• deliverance and spiritual warfare practices;
• prophetic declarations and healing ministries; and
• believers’ perceptions of healing experiences.

The study examines Pentecostal healing practices through indicators such as:

• frequency of healing services;
• methods used during healing sessions;
• believers’ testimonies and experiences;
• perceived effectiveness of healing practices; and
• influence of healing ministries on faith commitment.

Geographically, the study is limited to selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. Nigeria is selected because it represents one of the largest centres of Pentecostal Christianity globally, with extensive healing ministries and strong religious participation.

The population of the study consists of pastors, church leaders, healing ministry workers, and members of selected Pentecostal churches who have experience with or knowledge of healing practices.

The study focuses specifically on faith healing within Pentecostal Christianity. Other forms of healing practices, including traditional African healing systems, Islamic healing traditions, and secular medical approaches, are outside the main scope of the research.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Faith

Faith refers to a deep trust and confidence in God based on religious belief and spiritual commitment. In Christian theology, faith involves reliance on God’s promises and acceptance of divine power and authority.

Healing

Healing refers to the restoration of physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual wellbeing. In Pentecostal Christianity, healing is often understood as an act of divine intervention through the power of God.

Faith Healing

Faith healing refers to the belief and practice that individuals can experience restoration from sickness or suffering through faith, prayer, divine intervention, and spiritual activities.

African Christianity

African Christianity refers to forms of Christian belief, practice, and theological expression that have developed within African cultural, historical, and social contexts.

Pentecostal Christianity

Pentecostal Christianity refers to a Christian movement that emphasises the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, miracles, divine healing, prophecy, and personal religious experiences (Anderson, 2014).

Divine Healing

Divine healing refers to the belief that God has the ability and willingness to restore human health through supernatural intervention.

Healing Ministry

Healing ministry refers to organised church activities focused on praying for the sick, providing spiritual support, and seeking divine restoration.

Prayer Healing

Prayer healing refers to the practice of seeking healing through prayers directed towards God for intervention and restoration.

Deliverance

Deliverance refers to Pentecostal spiritual practices aimed at freeing individuals from perceived spiritual oppression, demonic influences, or spiritual difficulties.

Spiritual Experience

Spiritual experience refers to personal encounters with God or perceived supernatural realities that influence an individual’s faith and religious understanding.

Religious Commitment

Religious commitment refers to the level of dedication, participation, and attachment individuals demonstrate towards their religious beliefs and practices.
