INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Sanitation and environmental quality are critical determinants of public health, particularly in developing regions where infrastructure and regulatory enforcement are often limited. Poor sanitation and environmental pollution have been linked to a variety of communicable diseases, including cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, malaria, and respiratory infections (WHO, 2019). Contaminated water sources, inadequate waste disposal, and unplanned settlements contribute significantly to disease outbreaks, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities (Adeleke & Akinyele, 2020).
Ayangba, a semi-urban town in Kogi State, Nigeria, is experiencing rapid population growth alongside increasing urbanization. The community faces challenges related to solid waste disposal, open defecation, untreated sewage discharge, and pollution from agricultural and small-scale industrial activities (Okoro & Yusuf, 2021). Rivers, streams, and drainage channels in Ayangba are often used for domestic purposes, including drinking, cooking, and bathing, despite high levels of contamination. Such conditions create an environment conducive to the transmission of communicable diseases.
Studies have shown that poor sanitation and environmental degradation directly correlate with higher incidence rates of communicable diseases. For instance, inadequate waste management and water contamination significantly increase the prevalence of diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid in Nigerian communities (Oluwole et al., 2018). Similarly, stagnant water from improper drainage systems fosters mosquito breeding, contributing to malaria outbreaks. Despite public health campaigns and interventions by local authorities, the incidence of communicable diseases remains high in Ayangba, suggesting gaps in awareness, infrastructure, and policy enforcement.
This study, therefore, seeks to investigate how poor sanitation and environmental pollution influence the occurrence of communicable diseases in Ayangba, with the aim of informing targeted interventions to reduce disease prevalence and improve public health outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The prevalence of communicable diseases in Ayangba has been a persistent public health concern. Residents frequently report cases of diarrhea, cholera, malaria, typhoid, and other infectious diseases, which have been linked to contaminated water sources, improper waste disposal, and inadequate sanitation facilities (Okoro & Yusuf, 2021). Open dumping of domestic waste, poor sewage management, and pollution from nearby small-scale industries exacerbate the problem, creating breeding grounds for disease vectors.
Despite interventions by health authorities and local government agencies, communicable diseases remain rampant in the community. There is limited empirical data on the specific influence of sanitation practices and environmental pollution on disease incidence in Ayangba. Consequently, policy efforts to curb these health challenges are often reactive rather than preventive. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by systematically examining the relationship between poor sanitation, environmental pollution, and the incidence of communicable diseases in Ayangba.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of poor sanitation and environmental pollution on the incidence of communicable diseases in Ayangba. The specific objectives are:

Disease data will focus on common communicable diseases reported in the community over the past five years, including diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, malaria, and respiratory infections. The study is limited to households, local health centers, and relevant environmental and health agencies within Ayangba.
