INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Child dedication is a significant practice in many Christian traditions, symbolizing the commitment of parents and the church community to raise a child in accordance with biblical teachings. Unlike infant baptism, which is practiced in some denominations as a sacrament, child dedication is generally understood as a public declaration of parental responsibility and a spiritual act of entrusting the child to God. This practice is especially common in evangelical and Pentecostal churches, where emphasis is placed on personal faith and conscious decision-making in later life.

The theological foundation of child dedication is deeply rooted in Scripture, although the Bible does not explicitly command the practice in the form it is observed today. Instead, it is derived from various biblical precedents and principles. One of the most frequently cited examples is the dedication of Samuel by his mother Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:27–28, where she presents her child to the Lord in fulfillment of a vow. Similarly, in Luke 2:22–24, Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple in accordance with Jewish law, demonstrating an act of consecration and obedience to God. These passages provide a biblical framework for understanding the concept of dedicating children to God.

In addition, the Old Testament underscores the importance of raising children in the knowledge and fear of the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 instructs parents to diligently teach God’s commandments to their children, integrating spiritual instruction into daily life. Proverbs 22:6 further emphasizes the responsibility of guiding children in the right path. In the New Testament, Ephesians 6:4 admonishes parents to bring up their children in the training and instruction of the Lord. These scriptures collectively highlight the central role of parents and the faith community in nurturing the spiritual development of children.

Historically, the practice of child dedication has evolved within the broader context of Christian worship and family life. In early Christianity, greater emphasis was placed on baptism, including infant baptism in some traditions. However, during the Reformation and subsequent development of evangelical theology, child dedication emerged as an alternative practice that reflects a believer’s church perspective. This perspective maintains that baptism should follow a personal confession of faith, thereby distinguishing it from dedication, which is seen as a preparatory and symbolic act rather than a sacrament.

In contemporary church settings, child dedication ceremonies often involve prayers, scriptural exhortations, and commitments made by parents and church leaders. The congregation may also participate by pledging to support the child’s spiritual upbringing. While the core intention remains consistent, the manner in which child dedication is practiced varies widely across denominations and cultural contexts. In the Nigerian context and globally, child dedication continues to be a vital aspect of church life. It serves not only as a spiritual milestone for families but also as a means of reinforcing communal responsibility in child upbringing. However, despite its widespread practice, there is often a lack of deep theological understanding regarding its meaning, purpose, and biblical basis. Many participants engage in the practice out of tradition or cultural expectation rather than informed conviction.

Furthermore, contemporary societal changes, including shifting family structures, secular influences, and moral challenges, have increased the need for intentional and biblically grounded approaches to child upbringing. As children are exposed to diverse ideologies and values, the role of the church in providing spiritual guidance becomes even more critical. Child dedication, therefore, presents an opportunity for reaffirming biblical principles and strengthening the partnership between parents and the church in nurturing godly children.

This study seeks to explore the theology and practice of child dedication in Christianity by examining its biblical foundations and evaluating its application in contemporary church settings. By doing so, it aims to provide a clearer understanding of the practice and its relevance in modern Christian life.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread observance of child dedication in many Christian churches, there exists a significant gap between its practice and its theological understanding. Many parents participate in child dedication ceremonies without a clear comprehension of their spiritual significance or the responsibilities involved. As a result, the practice often becomes a mere ritual or cultural tradition rather than a meaningful expression of faith and commitment.

One major problem is the lack of a unified theological framework for child dedication. Different denominations and churches interpret and practice child dedication in varying ways, leading to inconsistencies and confusion among believers. While some view it as a solemn covenant before God, others treat it as a symbolic or celebratory event with little emphasis on long-term spiritual responsibility. This diversity of understanding raises questions about the true purpose and significance of child dedication in Christianity.

Another critical issue is the inadequate emphasis on parental responsibility following the dedication ceremony. Although parents publicly commit to raising their children in accordance with biblical teachings, many fail to consistently implement these commitments in their daily lives. Factors such as busy lifestyles, lack of spiritual discipline, and limited biblical knowledge contribute to this disconnect. Consequently, the intended impact of child dedication on the spiritual development of the child is often diminished.

Additionally, the role of the church in supporting families after child dedication is often insufficient. While churches may organize dedication ceremonies, they do not always provide ongoing guidance, mentorship, or structured programs to assist parents in fulfilling their commitments. This lack of follow-up undermines the communal aspect of child dedication and places the burden of responsibility solely on parents, who may not be adequately equipped.

Furthermore, there is a growing influence of secular culture on child upbringing, which often conflicts with biblical values. In an increasingly pluralistic and technologically driven society, children are exposed to diverse worldviews that may challenge their faith. Without a strong and consistent foundation in Christian teachings, it becomes difficult for children to develop a firm spiritual identity. This situation underscores the need for a more intentional and biblically grounded approach to child dedication and upbringing.

Another problem lies in the limited scholarly attention given to child dedication compared to other theological practices such as baptism. While baptism has been extensively studied and debated, child dedication has received relatively less academic focus, particularly in relation to its biblical basis and practical implications. This gap in literature contributes to the lack of clarity and depth in understanding the practice.

Therefore, the problem this study addresses is the insufficient theological understanding and inconsistent application of child dedication in contemporary Christian churches. By examining its biblical foundations and evaluating its practice, this study aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of child dedication as a tool for spiritual formation and community engagement.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the theology and practice of child dedication in Christianity, focusing on its biblical foundations and contemporary church application.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the biblical foundations of child dedication in both the Old and New Testaments.
2. Analyze the theological significance of child dedication in Christian doctrine.
3. Evaluate the practice of child dedication in contemporary churches.
4. Identify challenges associated with the practice of child dedication.

1.6 Scope of the Study
