INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The hospitality industry represents one of the most important components of the global tourism sector, contributing significantly to economic growth, employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, and socio-cultural development. Hotels serve as major service providers within the tourism value chain by offering accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation, conferences, and other guest-related facilities. However, the continuous expansion of hospitality activities has generated considerable environmental concerns due to the large quantities of waste produced through daily operations. Hotel activities such as food preparation, guest accommodation, housekeeping, laundry services, maintenance operations, and recreational facilities generate different categories of waste, including food waste, plastics, paper, glass, wastewater, and hazardous materials (Bohdanowicz, 2006).

Waste generation has become one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the hospitality industry worldwide. Unlike many other businesses, hotels operate continuously and serve large numbers of guests, resulting in substantial consumption of resources and increased waste production. The ineffective management of these wastes contributes to environmental degradation through pollution of land and water resources, increased greenhouse gas emissions, unpleasant surroundings, and public health risks. Consequently, sustainable waste management has become a central component of environmental sustainability strategies within the tourism and hospitality sector (Gössling, 2015).

Environmental sustainability refers to the responsible management of natural resources and ecological systems to ensure that current activities do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Within the hospitality industry, environmental sustainability involves reducing resource consumption, minimizing waste generation, promoting recycling, improving energy efficiency, and adopting environmentally responsible operational practices (Jones, Hillier, & Comfort, 2016). Sustainable waste management is therefore essential for hotels seeking to reduce their environmental footprint while improving operational efficiency and corporate responsibility.

Waste management strategies represent systematic approaches used by organizations to prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle, treat, and safely dispose of waste materials. In the hotel sector, effective waste management strategies include waste segregation at source, recycling programmes, composting of organic waste, reduction of food waste, elimination of unnecessary packaging, reuse of materials, and collaboration with licensed waste disposal organizations. These strategies support the principles of the circular economy by transforming waste from a disposal problem into a potential resource (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2015).

Globally, hotels have increasingly adopted sustainable waste management practices as part of green hospitality initiatives. Many international hotel brands have introduced environmental management systems, waste reduction targets, recycling programmes, and sustainability reporting frameworks to minimize their ecological impacts. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, 2023), sustainable tourism requires responsible resource management, including effective waste control mechanisms, because uncontrolled waste generation threatens environmental quality and destination attractiveness.

Food waste represents one of the most significant waste streams generated by hotels. Restaurants, buffets, catering services, and kitchen operations often produce large quantities of organic waste resulting from food preparation, overproduction, and customer leftovers. Research indicates that food waste in hospitality establishments contributes significantly to environmental problems because decomposing organic waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas with considerable climate impacts (Filimonau & De Coteau, 2019). Therefore, strategies such as improved menu planning, portion control, food donation programmes, and composting have become important approaches for reducing hospitality-related waste.

In developing countries such as Nigeria, waste management remains a major environmental challenge due to rapid urbanization, population growth, inadequate waste infrastructure, and limited recycling capacity. Lagos State, being Nigeria’s commercial hub and one of Africa’s largest urban centres, generates substantial quantities of municipal waste daily. The increasing number of hotels and hospitality establishments in Lagos has contributed to rising volumes of commercial waste, creating challenges for effective collection, treatment, and disposal.

The hospitality industry in Lagos State has experienced significant growth due to business activities, tourism, conferences, entertainment, and international travel. The city hosts numerous hotels ranging from small guest houses to large luxury establishments. While this growth has contributed positively to economic development, it has also intensified environmental pressures associated with waste generation. Hotels generate significant quantities of solid waste from kitchens, guest rooms, offices, restaurants, and recreational facilities, making effective waste management a critical sustainability issue.

Studies conducted within Lagos hotels indicate that waste management practices remain inadequate despite increasing awareness of environmental sustainability. Filimonau and Tochukwu (2020) examined solid waste management approaches among hotels in Lagos and found that many hotels relied more on waste disposal methods rather than prevention and reduction strategies. Their study identified limited environmental awareness, insufficient government support, and weak organizational commitment as factors affecting effective waste mitigation in Nigerian hotels.

Similarly, Chikezie et al. (2023) found that waste reduction, reuse, recycling, collection, and treatment practices significantly influence hotel operational performance in Lagos State. The study emphasized that structured waste management frameworks are necessary for improving sustainability outcomes within the hotel sector. These findings demonstrate that waste management strategies are not only environmental initiatives but also important managerial practices that can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen organizational sustainability.

The adoption of effective waste management strategies can provide several benefits to hotels. First, waste reduction reduces operational expenses associated with waste collection and disposal. Second, recycling and reuse initiatives create opportunities for resource recovery and improved material efficiency. Third, environmentally responsible practices enhance hotel reputation and attract environmentally conscious customers. Increasingly, tourists and hotel guests consider environmental responsibility when making accommodation decisions, making sustainability an important competitive factor within hospitality markets (Han, Hsu, & Sheu, 2019).

Despite these benefits, many hotels in Nigeria continue to experience difficulties implementing comprehensive waste management systems. Challenges include inadequate recycling facilities, limited financial resources, insufficient environmental training among employees, weak enforcement of environmental regulations, and low awareness among guests. In addition, some hotel operators view sustainability initiatives as additional costs rather than long-term investments that can improve efficiency and competitiveness.

The Nigerian government and environmental agencies have introduced policies aimed at improving waste management and reducing environmental pollution. However, implementation challenges remain, particularly within commercial establishments. Lagos State has introduced various environmental management initiatives, but the effectiveness of these programmes depends largely on cooperation from businesses, including hotels.

Therefore, understanding how hotels adopt and implement waste management strategies is essential for achieving sustainable tourism development in Nigeria. This study examines waste management strategies and environmental sustainability in the hospitality industry, focusing specifically on hotels in Lagos State. It seeks to determine how waste reduction, recycling, segregation, and disposal practices contribute to environmental sustainability within hotel operations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid growth of the hospitality industry in Lagos State has contributed significantly to economic development through employment creation, tourism promotion, and business expansion. However, the sector’s growth has also created environmental challenges, particularly through increasing volumes of waste generated from hotel operations. Hotels produce different forms of waste daily, including food remains, plastics, paper materials, packaging waste, wastewater, and other solid wastes. Without proper management, these wastes contribute to environmental pollution and threaten public health.

Despite the increasing recognition of environmental sustainability, many hotels in Lagos State continue to rely on traditional waste disposal methods rather than comprehensive waste reduction and recycling strategies. In several establishments, waste segregation is poorly practiced, recycling systems are limited, and waste prevention measures are not adequately integrated into daily operations. This situation increases dependence on landfills and contributes to environmental degradation.

A major problem is the limited adoption of sustainable waste management strategies among hotels. Although international hospitality organizations have embraced practices such as waste minimization, recycling, composting, and circular economy approaches, many Nigerian hotels still face challenges in implementing similar initiatives. Research evidence suggests that hotel waste management in Lagos is affected by organizational attitudes, inadequate policies, limited environmental awareness, and insufficient institutional support.

Furthermore, there is inadequate empirical understanding of how waste management strategies influence environmental sustainability within Nigerian hotels. While previous studies have examined general waste management challenges, limited attention has been given to assessing the relationship between specific waste management practices and sustainability outcomes in hotels. This creates a knowledge gap regarding the effectiveness of waste reduction, recycling, reuse, and disposal strategies within the hospitality industry.

Another concern is that some hotel managers may prioritize immediate operational needs over environmental responsibilities due to perceived costs associated with sustainability investments. Without clear evidence demonstrating the environmental and operational benefits of proper waste management, hotel operators may continue to treat waste management as a regulatory requirement rather than a strategic sustainability practice.

The absence of effective waste management systems also affects Lagos State’s broader environmental sustainability objectives. Poorly managed hotel waste contributes to pollution, increased landfill pressure, and resource wastage. Therefore, improving waste management practices within hotels is essential for supporting sustainable tourism development and protecting the urban environment.

This study therefore seeks to address these gaps by examining waste management strategies and environmental sustainability in the hospitality industry, with particular focus on hotels in Lagos State.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the relationship between waste management strategies and environmental sustainability in the hospitality industry, focusing on hotels in Lagos State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study are to:

1. Examine the waste management strategies adopted by hotels in Lagos State.
2. Determine the extent to which hotels implement waste reduction, recycling, and reuse practices.
3. Assess the relationship between waste management strategies and environmental sustainability.
4. Identify challenges affecting effective waste management practices among hotels in Lagos State.

1.5 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What waste management strategies are adopted by hotels in Lagos State?
2. To what extent do hotels practice waste reduction, recycling, and reuse?
3. What relationship exists between waste management strategies and environmental sustainability?
4. What challenges affect effective waste management practices among hotels?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H0: There is no significant relationship between waste management strategies and environmental sustainability in hotels in Lagos State.

H1: There is a significant relationship between waste management strategies and environmental sustainability in hotels in Lagos State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to hotel managers, government agencies, environmental organizations, researchers, and customers.

Hotel managers will benefit from understanding how effective waste management strategies can improve environmental performance, operational efficiency, and corporate reputation.

Government agencies and policymakers will gain useful information for strengthening environmental regulations and sustainability programmes within the hospitality sector.

Environmental organizations will benefit from evidence that can support awareness campaigns and sustainable waste management initiatives.

Researchers will gain additional knowledge regarding waste management and sustainability practices within Nigeria’s hospitality industry.

1.8 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on waste management strategies and environmental sustainability in hotels in Lagos State. The study examines waste reduction, recycling, reuse, waste segregation, and disposal practices as components of waste management strategies, while environmental sustainability represents the outcome variable.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Waste Management Strategies:
Organized approaches used by hotels to reduce, collect, recycle, treat, and dispose of waste materials effectively.

Environmental Sustainability:
The responsible management of environmental resources to reduce ecological damage and preserve the environment for future generations.

Hospitality Industry:
The sector involved in providing accommodation, food services, and tourism-related services.

Hotel:
A commercial establishment that provides accommodation, food, and related services to guests.

Waste Reduction:
Practices aimed at minimizing the quantity of waste generated through efficient resource use.

Recycling:
