CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Hospital is an aspect that scheduling plays a vital role for the successful achievement of its curriculums. Hospital work takes a succeeding step. Each step has a specified duration of time and a mapped out work coed associated with it. The time stipulated to be utilized maximally to enable you cover the workload elaborately.
The issue of analysis of the workload and time involved in a Hospital category and distributing the workload is time intervals. For maximum knowledge impact it a great concern to the professoriate in the field. This is where comprehensive medical duties schedule is always designed to suit the curriculum.
Medical duties schedule does not only involved all capture of time duties to medical personnel. It also involves the careful allocation of other resources like labor force and space available. When all these factors are not adequately taken care of, it leads to classes which hinder the effective Hospital operation.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUT TEACHING HOSPITAL ENUGU) ESUT Teaching Hospital Enugu came into existence on the 25th of August 2004, through the effort of Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, who established. The hospital provides qualitative Health care services but maintains that they do not just heal mere physical illness which attacks the human body, but much deeper and holistic healing of the entire human person. Therefore ESUT Teaching Hospital is not just an “Ordinary” Hospital where patients come to receive medical treatment to heal their ailing body only.
The diverse nature of the cases treated by the hospital, coupled with the fact that the consistent effort they make to develop their service areas and acceptable standard. These service areas include all the wards (medical and surgical for male and female, pediatrics, chest unit and the maternity section as a whole. Other departments are outpatient department (OPD), laboratory department, pharmacy department, central sterling and supply department (C.S.S.D) X-RAY department community medicine and the mobile clinic, theatre department. The roles of these departments are complementary and depict what they call team-work in patient management, the patient always beings at the center.
The Hospital since its establishment has demonstrated a very keen interest in the staff recruitment and development of highly skilled and very dependable medical and paramedical personnel. Presently, the workforce stands at 460.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The problem associated with the old manual system of medical duties scheduling hindered effective table prediction.
It takes a lot of time to process the volume of data involved manually. This makes analysis and synthesis difficult for human to carry out.
The existing system waste a lot of time. This delay the in effect set back of the Hospital operation. The manual medical duties scheduling causes lot of errors and clashes. Duties clashes between Doctors also medical duties scheduling unreliable.
Due to this manual approach toward medical duties schedule, there are problems of time-consuming, repeated process and clash/conflict of fixtures.
1.3 PURPOSE OF STUDY
This study is carried out with a view of producing a computerized medical duties scheduling during manual medical duties scheduling. The new system will also produce a comprehensive and authentic medical duties schedule.
This study also proves the capabilities of the computer in the area of processing concerning the Hospital sector. By implementing the computerised system, one would be able to obtain information needed at a particular point in time. Finally, the study was also carried out to the rode of medical duties schedule medical duties preparation in valves a lot of work in the area of processing (ie allocation of available resources) to avoid clashes.
The major clashes that always occur is the Doctors and nurses clashes. The Doctor clash takes place when two Doctor is assigned to work at the same period of time, likewise nurses clash.
To handle this aspect successfully and to produce a reliable result a more sophisticated machine like a computer has to be introduced. The computer with its sophisticated features will handle the time table preparation (processing) in an automatic way. It automatically according to pre-defined program instructions. This will lessen the work involved in the preparation of medical duties scheduling and aid in producing adequate and comprehensive medical duties scheduling.
1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Several departments in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu have been for the past year eve till date designing their Duties schedule manually.
The primary aim of this project work is to relieve the burden and obstacle hindering the production of effective medical duties schedule by developing a computer program which will be timely, more accurate more reliable and more comprehensive. This new system also makes the entire operation very easy.
1.5 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The overall goal of this work is purely investigative and prescriptive. The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu has been selected as our case study.
Our work is limited to the study of medical duties scheduling system existing in University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and designing a program for its computerization.
1.6 LIMITATION AND CONSTRAINTS
I encountered many difficulties in the pursuit of material and resources that help for the successful completion of this project work.
It was also difficult to collect data for my case study due to the unavailability of personnel to give me adequate information in my area of study.
1.7 ASSUMPTION
I assume that with the aid of computer when implemented, the medical duties schedule will be efficient and more effective so as tackles the procedures involved automatically.
The time consumed in repairing the work manually every year or month by month will be reduced.
