Project – The Impact of Christmas Celebration on Christian Faith
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Research Topic: The Impact of Christmas Celebration on Christian Faith
1.1 Background to the Study
Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated religious festivals in Christianity, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ and reflecting the central Christian beliefs of love, hope, peace, humility and salvation. The celebration provides Christians with an opportunity to remember the incarnation of Jesus Christ, which represents God’s coming into the world in human form for the redemption of humanity. The biblical account of the birth of Jesus in Matthew 1:18–25 and Luke 2:1–20 establishes the theological foundation of the Christmas celebration. Through this event, Christians are reminded of God’s love and commitment to humanity. Hauerwas and Willimon (1989) explain the distinctive identity of Christian communities in relation to their commitment to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Consequently, Christmas should be understood not merely as an annual festive occasion but also as an opportunity for Christians to reflect on the significance of Christ’s birth and its implications for their spiritual lives.
The theological significance of Christmas is closely connected to the Christian doctrine of incarnation, which teaches that Jesus Christ is God who became human to bring salvation to mankind. This doctrine is expressed in John 1:1–14, particularly the declaration that the Word became flesh and dwelt among humanity. The birth of Christ therefore represents an essential foundation of Christian faith because it demonstrates God’s willingness to identify with humanity and provide a means of reconciliation between God and mankind. MacCulloch (2010) observes that Christianity developed around the person, teachings and historical significance of Jesus Christ, whose life and mission remain central to Christian identity. Christmas provides an important opportunity for churches to teach these fundamental beliefs through sermons, Bible readings, worship services, carol presentations and other religious activities. Through these practices, believers are encouraged to develop a deeper understanding of the person of Jesus Christ and strengthen their commitment to Christian principles.
Furthermore, Christmas celebration plays an important role in promoting Christian fellowship, unity and communal worship. During the Christmas season, churches organise special worship services, musical performances, prayer meetings, evangelistic programmes and charitable activities that bring Christians together. These activities provide opportunities for believers to interact, demonstrate love and strengthen their relationships within the Christian community. The celebration also encourages Christians to extend kindness and generosity to people outside their immediate religious communities. The importance of communal worship in developing Christian identity is reflected in the biblical instruction in Hebrews 10:24–25, which encourages believers to assemble together and motivate one another towards love and good works. Talley (1991), in discussing the historical development of the Christian liturgical year, demonstrates the importance of recurring religious observances in shaping the worship and collective identity of Christian communities. Christmas therefore contributes to the social and spiritual dimensions of Christian faith by encouraging participation, fellowship and shared religious experiences.
Another important dimension of Christmas celebration is its influence on the demonstration of Christian values, particularly love, generosity, compassion, forgiveness and peaceful coexistence. The birth of Jesus Christ is traditionally associated with God’s expression of love towards humanity, as reflected in John 3:16. During Christmas, Christians are encouraged to demonstrate this love through giving, visiting the sick, supporting vulnerable individuals, assisting the less privileged and reconciling with people with whom they have disagreements. These activities provide practical expressions of the teachings of Jesus Christ, who emphasised love for God and one’s neighbour as fundamental commandments (Matthew 22:37–40). Smith (2009) explains that Christian practices and repeated forms of worship contribute to shaping the desires, values and identities of believers. In this regard, Christmas can become an avenue through which Christians translate their religious convictions into practical actions that benefit individuals, families and society.
However, the celebration of Christmas has gradually incorporated several cultural and commercial activities that sometimes compete with its original religious significance. In contemporary society, the Christmas season is often associated with shopping, expensive gifts, elaborate decorations, entertainment, parties and other forms of material consumption. Although these activities are not necessarily incompatible with Christian faith, excessive attention to them may shift the focus away from the birth of Jesus Christ. Nissenbaum (1996), in his historical examination of Christmas in America, discusses how commercial interests and changing social practices contributed to the transformation of Christmas celebrations. Similarly, Restad (1995) documents the historical development of Christmas traditions and the influence of changing cultural practices on the way the festival is observed. These developments raise important questions about whether contemporary Christians continue to give adequate attention to the spiritual meaning of Christmas or increasingly regard it as an occasion for social enjoyment and material exchange.
The commercialization of Christmas may also create spiritual and social challenges for Christian believers, particularly where material expectations become more important than religious commitments. Some individuals may feel pressured to purchase expensive clothes, food, gifts and decorations in order to meet family or societal expectations during the festive period. Such pressures can encourage unnecessary spending, financial difficulties, unhealthy competition and the development of materialistic attitudes. These tendencies may contradict the Christian teachings of contentment, humility, moderation and concern for others, as expressed in 1 Timothy 6:6–10 and Philippians 2:3–8. Schmidt (1995) examines the relationship between consumer culture, religious traditions and the commercial transformation of American holidays, demonstrating how market activities can influence the meaning and public expression of celebrations. For Christians, the major concern is not the possession or exchange of gifts but the possibility that material activities may overshadow the spiritual message of Christ’s birth. Therefore, there is a need to examine how Christmas celebrations influence the religious attitudes, values and practices of believers.
In addition, Christmas celebration provides an important opportunity for Christian churches to strengthen religious education and transmit Christian traditions to younger generations. Children, teenagers and young adults are introduced to the story of Jesus’ birth through nativity dramas, Christmas carols, Bible readings, Sunday school programmes and church activities. These experiences can contribute to their understanding of biblical teachings and encourage the development of Christian identity from an early age. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 emphasises the responsibility of passing religious instructions to children, while 2 Timothy 3:14–15 highlights the importance of early exposure to the Scriptures. Smith (2009) explains that religious practices and formative experiences play an important role in shaping the beliefs and identities of individuals. Consequently, Christmas can serve as an educational and spiritual instrument through which Christian families and churches reinforce biblical values and encourage young people to appreciate the significance of Jesus Christ.
Despite the challenges associated with commercialization and secular cultural influences, Christmas remains an important opportunity for spiritual reflection, religious commitment and Christian renewal. Churches and Christian leaders can use the season to emphasise the biblical account of the nativity, encourage meaningful worship, promote evangelism and organise programmes that demonstrate Christ’s love through practical service to humanity. Christians can also use the period to evaluate their relationship with God, reflect on the teachings of Jesus and renew their commitment to living according to biblical principles. The significance of the Christian calendar and its recurring seasons is discussed by Talley (1991), who examines how liturgical observances have historically provided structure for Christian worship and remembrance. Therefore, the impact of Christmas celebration on Christian faith deserves systematic investigation, particularly in relation to spiritual growth, Christian values, church participation, communal relationships and the influence of commercial activities. Such an investigation will help establish whether Christmas celebrations strengthen Christian faith or whether certain contemporary practices weaken the spiritual significance of the occasion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Christmas celebration occupies an important position in Christian religious life because it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, which is central to the Christian understanding of salvation and God’s relationship with humanity. Ideally, the celebration should encourage believers to reflect on the incarnation of Christ, strengthen their relationship with God, demonstrate Christian love and renew their commitment to biblical teachings. However, the contemporary celebration of Christmas appears to be increasingly influenced by social, cultural and commercial activities. In many communities, greater attention is given to entertainment, shopping, expensive gifts, parties and elaborate celebrations than to the spiritual significance of Christ’s birth. This development raises concerns about whether Christmas still performs its expected spiritual role in strengthening Christian faith.
Another problem concerns the growing influence of materialism and consumerism on the attitudes and behaviour of Christians during the Christmas season. The pressure to purchase expensive gifts, prepare elaborate meals, wear new clothes and organise costly celebrations may encourage unnecessary competition and financial difficulties among individuals and families. Such practices may contradict Christian teachings on humility, contentment, moderation and generosity. Although gift-giving and social celebrations can promote happiness and fellowship, excessive emphasis on material possessions may weaken the spiritual lessons associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. Schmidt (1995) and Nissenbaum (1996) provide historical perspectives on the influence of commercial culture on traditional celebrations, making it important to examine how these developments affect Christian attitudes and religious commitments.
Furthermore, there are concerns about the extent to which Christmas celebration contributes to genuine spiritual growth among Christians. Although churches organise Christmas carols, special worship services, nativity dramas, evangelistic programmes and charitable activities, participation in these programmes does not necessarily translate into lasting spiritual transformation. Some believers may participate in Christmas activities primarily for entertainment, social recognition or family obligations without developing a deeper understanding of the biblical significance of the occasion. This creates a need to investigate whether Christmas celebration encourages meaningful Bible study, prayer, worship, Christian fellowship and practical expressions of faith or whether its influence is largely temporary. The issue is particularly important because Christian faith should be reflected not only in religious activities but also in the everyday attitudes and conduct of believers.
Finally, the increasing influence of secular cultural practices and changing generational attitudes presents a challenge to the preservation of the religious meaning of Christmas. Younger Christians may become more familiar with Santa Claus, decorations, entertainment and gift exchanges than with the biblical account of Jesus’ birth. If this trend continues without adequate religious instruction, the transmission of Christian values and traditions to younger generations may become increasingly difficult. Christian families and church leaders therefore face the responsibility of ensuring that Christmas remains an opportunity for biblical teaching, spiritual development and the demonstration of Christ-like character. The problem that motivates this study is the need to establish the actual impact of Christmas celebration on Christian faith, particularly its influence on spiritual growth, Christian values, religious participation and the preservation of the true meaning of Christ’s birth.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of Christmas celebration on Christian faith, with particular reference to five selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State. It examines the influence of Christmas celebration on the spiritual growth and development of Christians, the promotion of Christian values, the effects of commercialization and materialism on religious commitment, and the contribution of Christmas to Christian fellowship, church participation and religious education among younger generations.
The study will specifically consider the religious and social activities associated with Christmas celebrations in the five selected Pentecostal churches. These activities include special Christmas worship services, Christmas carols, nativity presentations, evangelistic programmes, prayer meetings, gift-giving, charitable activities and family celebrations. It will investigate how these activities influence the spiritual lives, religious attitudes, moral values and commitment of members of the selected churches.
Geographically, the study will be restricted to five selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The respondents will comprise members and relevant church leaders of the selected churches who can provide useful information on Christmas celebrations and their influence on Christian faith. The study will therefore concentrate on the experiences and perspectives of these selected churches, and its findings will be interpreted within the context of the study area rather than generalised to all Pentecostal churches in Lagos State or Nigeria.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may encounter certain limitations in the course of data collection and analysis. One possible limitation is the unwillingness of some respondents to provide detailed information about their personal religious experiences and attitudes towards Christmas celebration. Some respondents may also provide socially desirable answers because of the religious nature of the research topic.
Another limitation may be the difficulty of obtaining sufficient information from different categories of Christians, particularly individuals with varying levels of church participation and religious commitment. Time and financial constraints may also affect the extent of data collection and the geographical coverage of the research.
Despite these possible limitations, appropriate research procedures will be adopted to ensure that the information collected is relevant to the objectives of the study. Respondents will be encouraged to provide honest answers, and the researcher will ensure that the collected information is treated appropriately.
