INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The advent of digital media has significantly transformed the practice of journalism globally, and Akwa Ibom State, located in southern Nigeria, is no exception. Over the years, political reporting has undergone dramatic changes due to the rise of digital technologies such as social media platforms, online news portals, and citizen journalism. According to Oyedemi (2019), digital media has reshaped the dynamics of political discourse, offering journalists in Akwa Ibom State new avenues for gathering information, disseminating news, and engaging with the public. This transformation has brought about a shift in how political stories are constructed, communicated, and received by the audience, which now expects real-time updates and greater interactivity from media outlets.

Research has demonstrated that digital media provides journalists with a broader scope for political reporting by enabling the instantaneous sharing of information. Digital platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, have become essential tools for journalists in Akwa Ibom State, allowing them to access political information, connect with political figures, and engage in discussions on pressing political issues (Khan, 2021). These platforms serve as alternatives to traditional methods of gathering political news, such as press conferences and government briefings. Moreover, digital media allows journalists to bypass gatekeeping and censorship that often occurs within traditional media channels, thereby granting them greater freedom in reporting political events. This freedom can be a double-edged sword, however, as it can lead to the spread of misinformation and fake news, which has become a significant concern in the realm of political reporting.

The influence of digital media on political reporting among journalists in Akwa Ibom State is further magnified by the increasing role of citizen journalism. According to Uduak (2020), citizens in Akwa Ibom are actively participating in the political reporting process by sharing political stories and engaging in discussions on digital platforms. 1.2. Statement of the Problem

However, while the advent of digital media offers numerous advantages, it also raises critical questions about the accuracy, reliability, and ethical standards in political reporting among journalists.

Journalists in Akwa Ibom State are faced with the challenge of adapting to the rapid pace and ever-changing nature of digital media, which can sometimes blur the line between credible journalism and sensationalism. This study aims to explore the influence of digital media on political reporting among journalists in Akwa Ibom State. By examining the challenges, opportunities, and ethical concerns that arise from the use of digital platforms in political journalism, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of how digital media has reshaped the political reporting landscape. Ultimately, the study aims to assess the impact of digital media on the credibility, accuracy, and professional integrity of political journalism in the state, providing insights that could inform the development of guidelines and best practices for journalists navigating the digital media space.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine influence of digital media on political reporting among journalists in Akwa Ibom State. The specific objectives of the study are to:
1. To examine the extent to which journalists use digital media for political reporting.

2. To assess the impact of digital media on the accuracy and timeliness of political news reported by journalists.
3. To investigate the role of social media platforms in shaping the political narratives presented by journalists.
4. To explore the challenges faced by journalists when utilizing digital media for political reporting.

The research hypothesis is buttressed below:

1.6. Significance of the Study

The advent of digital media has transformed various sectors, including political reporting. As digital platforms continue to evolve, they offer journalists a new set of tools, including social media, blogs, and online news websites, enabling faster access to information and greater interaction with the public. This research is essential for identifying the extent to which digital media impacts the accuracy, depth, and credibility of political reporting in the state, ultimately shaping public perception and the democratic process.

Ultimately, the study seeks to strengthen the relationship between media practitioners and their audiences by promoting informed, transparent, and responsible political journalism in the state.

The study examines influence of digital media on political reporting among journalists in Akwa Ibom State. The study is limited to selected Journalist in Akwa Ibom State.

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

Influence: Influence refers to the power or capacity to affect the behavior, opinions, or actions of others. In the context of this study, influence refers to the ability of digital media to shape political reporting, either by altering how political news is gathered, processed, and presented or by affecting the public’s perception of political issues.

Digital Media: Digital media refers to any form of media that is created, stored, and distributed in a digital format. This includes online platforms such as social media networks (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), blogs, websites, and other internet-based channels. Digital media has become a significant force in communication, allowing for the rapid sharing and interaction of content, including news, entertainment, and other forms of information.

Political Reporting: Political reporting is the process by which journalists collect, investigate, analyze, and present news related to political events, figures, policies, and institutions. It involves covering elections, government decisions, political debates, and other matters that influence the political landscape. The goal of political reporting is to inform the public, promote accountability, and provide accurate and balanced coverage of political developments.

Journalists: Journalists are individuals who gather, write, edit, and report news to inform the public, typically through various media channels such as newspapers, television, radio, and digital platforms. They play a crucial role in society by acting as intermediaries between events or issues and the audience, providing in-depth analysis, fact-checking, and ensuring the integrity of the information they deliver. Journalists are expected to uphold ethical standards, including accuracy, fairness, and independence in their reporting.
