ABSTRACT
The study investigated the impact of smartphone usage on the academic performance of tertiary institution students in Maiduguri, Borno State. Specifically, the study examined the extent of smartphone usage, the effect of academic and recreational smartphone use on academic performance, and strategies students employ to manage smartphone use. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, with a sample of 400 students drawn from the University of Maiduguri and Ramat Polytechnic using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire divided into demographic information, smartphone usage, academic smartphone use, recreational use, and management strategies. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, and mean scores) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and regression analysis) were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that students extensively use smartphones, averaging 5–6 hours daily, for both academic and recreational purposes. Academic smartphone use positively correlated with improved understanding of coursework, while excessive recreational use negatively affected academic performance. Students employed strategies such as setting time limits, using app controls, and avoiding smartphone use during study sessions to balance their digital engagement with academic responsibilities. The study concluded that smartphones can enhance academic performance when used primarily for learning and managed responsibly. It recommended that students, educators, and policymakers promote responsible smartphone use, integrate mobile learning tools into teaching, and develop policies to minimize distractions while maximizing educational benefits.

1.1 Background of the Study
The advent of smartphones has revolutionized communication, information access, and learning across the globe. These devices have transitioned from mere communication tools to sophisticated platforms capable of performing complex tasks, ranging from internet browsing to multimedia production. While smartphones can facilitate access to e-books, online lectures, and academic discussions, they are also widely used for social media, entertainment, and gaming. Applications like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and various mobile games are highly engaging and often consume significant amounts of students’ time. In many cases, students may intend to use their devices for academic purposes but find themselves diverted by entertainment content. This dual nature of smartphones—as both a learning tool and a potential source of distraction—has raised concerns among educators, parents, and policymakers regarding their impact on academic achievement.
In Maiduguri, where tertiary students increasingly rely on smartphones, there is growing concern that overuse or misuse may negatively influence academic performance. The study is limited to undergraduate and higher national diploma students and does not include secondary school students or students outside Maiduguri.
