INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The growing concern over moral decay among Nigerian youths has captured the attention of educators, religious leaders, policymakers, and the general public. Across various parts of the country, including urban and rural areas, there has been a steady rise in cases of cultism, examination malpractice, cybercrime, sexual promiscuity, theft, drug abuse, and a general decline in respect for authority. These troubling trends pose a serious threat to national stability, peace, and socio-economic development. The school environment, which should ideally be a center for moral instruction and personal development, is often found lacking in effective tools to counter these moral challenges. This reality underscores the urgent need to revisit and strengthen avenues within the educational curriculum that are specifically designed to foster moral character, one of which is Christian Religious Studies (CRS).

Christian Religious Studies is an academic subject that goes beyond mere religious instruction. It aims to instill in students moral virtues and life principles based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and biblical doctrines. Through CRS, students are introduced to values such as honesty, love, self-control, forgiveness, tolerance, humility, and respect for both divine and human authority. These values are essential for the development of a disciplined and responsible individual. As Akinbote and Ayodele (2019) note, Christian religious education contributes meaningfully to the emotional and ethical development of learners, equipping them to make sound moral decisions both in school and in society at large.

Beyond personal character formation, CRS also plays a vital role in promoting peaceful coexistence and civic responsibility. In a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society like Nigeria, where religious and cultural tensions often spark conflict, Christian Religious Studies fosters understanding, empathy, and tolerance. It teaches students to embrace differences and respect others’ beliefs, thereby reducing the likelihood of religiously-motivated intolerance and violence. According to Okonkwo (2021), schools that actively engage in CRS tend to report lower levels of student indiscipline and higher levels of positive interpersonal relationships among peers. This indicates a direct link between moral instruction through CRS and the social behavior of students.

However, despite its numerous benefits, Christian Religious Studies remains underappreciated and inadequately supported in many Nigerian schools. Some school administrators and even policymakers treat CRS as a non-essential subject, often allocating it fewer periods in the timetable, employing unqualified teachers, or omitting it entirely from examination syllabi. In addition, material resources such as textbooks and teaching aids are frequently lacking, making the effective delivery of the subject difficult. This neglect has created a moral vacuum in the education system, contributing to the rising levels of moral degeneration among youths. Without strong reinforcement of moral values, many students fall prey to negative influences from peers, the media, and society.

Kwali Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, reflects these broader national issues. It is a unique setting that combines both rural and semi-urban communities with varying religious affiliations and socio-economic backgrounds. The schools in this area range from private to public institutions, some of which struggle with insufficient funding, inadequate staffing, and weak moral enforcement mechanisms. Yet, it is also a region where efforts to promote moral development through religious education can yield significant insights and impact. Given this diversity, Kwali presents an ideal context for assessing the real-life effectiveness of Christian Religious Studies in shaping the moral character of students.

This study is therefore designed to examine the role of Christian Religious Studies in the moral development of students in Kwali Area Council. It seeks to understand how CRS is being taught, the extent to which it influences students’ behavior, and the challenges that hinder its effectiveness. By evaluating these aspects, the study aims to provide recommendations for enhancing the role of CRS in the school curriculum, not only in Kwali but in other parts of Nigeria. The findings will contribute to ongoing discussions on educational reform, youth moral development, and the integration of faith-based instruction in the broader national strategy for character formation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the official inclusion of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in the Nigerian school curriculum, there is growing evidence that the moral values it seeks to instill are not being reflected in the attitudes and behaviors of many students. Across the country, youths are increasingly associated with negative behaviors such as lying, cheating, sexual promiscuity, disrespect for elders, cultism, drug abuse, and examination malpractice. These developments have caused widespread concern among teachers, parents, religious leaders, and community stakeholders who fear that the future of the nation is at risk if the younger generation is not properly guided morally and spiritually.

In Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, this situation is no different. Local school authorities and community members have raised concerns about rising levels of indiscipline and moral decay among secondary school students. The influence of peer pressure, access to harmful online content, and lack of effective moral guidance in schools are often cited as contributing factors. Although CRS is being taught in many schools, the desired transformation in character and conduct seems largely absent, suggesting a disconnect between the intended objectives of the subject and its actual impact on students.

This raises important questions about the current state and implementation of Christian Religious Studies in schools within the Kwali Area Council. Are the teaching methods engaging enough to reach the hearts and minds of students? Do teachers possess the appropriate training and moral integrity to effectively impart values? Is the curriculum tailored to address real-life moral challenges faced by students? Moreover, in a generation heavily influenced by digital media and secular ideologies, it is crucial to assess whether students still see relevance in the teachings of CRS or if the subject is merely viewed as an academic requirement with little application to daily life.

The persistent rise in moral decadence despite the presence of CRS in schools suggests there may be systemic challenges hindering its effectiveness. These could include inadequate instructional materials, lack of qualified CRS teachers, poor time allocation in school timetables, and insufficient support from school management and policymakers. Additionally, the home and societal environment may be undermining the moral lessons taught in school, thereby limiting their effectiveness. Without a comprehensive understanding of these underlying issues, efforts to strengthen moral education through CRS may remain ineffective.

It is against this backdrop that the present study seeks to investigate the significance of Christian Religious Studies in the moral development of students in Kwali Area Council. By examining how CRS is being implemented, received, and supported in selected schools, the study aims to uncover the gaps between curriculum objectives and moral outcomes. Ultimately, this research will provide valuable insights into how CRS can be repositioned to effectively contribute to the moral transformation of Nigerian students in a rapidly changing world.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the importance of Christian Religious Studies in the moral development of Nigerian students, using Kwali Area Council of the FCT as a case study. Specific objectives include:

1. To evaluate the influence of Christian Religious Studies on students’ moral behavior in Kwali Area Council.
2. To determine the extent to which CRS is taught and practiced in selected schools within the area.
3. To identify the challenges faced in the teaching and learning of CRS in schools.
4. To assess the perception of teachers and students regarding the role of CRS in moral development.

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How does Christian Religious Studies influence the moral behavior of students in Kwali Area Council?
2. To what extent is CRS taught and practiced in schools within the area?
3. What are the major challenges affecting the effective delivery of CRS?
4. What are the perceptions of teachers and students about the role of CRS in fostering moral development?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Christian Religious Studies does not significantly influence the moral development of students in Kwali Area Council.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is of great significance as it addresses a critical area of concern in the Nigerian educational and moral landscape—youth character development through religious instruction. By examining the importance of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in shaping the moral lives of students, the study offers empirical data and practical insights into how religious education influences behavior, attitudes, and ethical decision-making among youths. In a society grappling with moral collapse, this research becomes a timely intervention that highlights the need to revisit, reinforce, and perhaps redefine the role of CRS in schools.

One of the major beneficiaries of this study is the group of school administrators and policymakers. The findings will provide them with valuable evidence on the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the current CRS curriculum in promoting moral values among students. This can serve as a foundation for reviewing and enhancing the content, delivery method, and assessment strategies of CRS. The study is limited to selected secondary schools within Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. It focuses on the influence of Christian Religious Studies on the moral development of students, taking into consideration the teaching practices, student attitudes, and institutional challenges.

Christian Religious Studies (CRS): Christian Religious Studies is an academic subject offered in Nigerian schools that focuses on the teachings, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Bible. It aims to instill in students the values of Christianity, such as love, honesty, humility, forgiveness, and faithfulness. Beyond religious knowledge, CRS promotes ethical behavior, spiritual growth, and personal integrity, helping learners develop a strong moral compass. In this study, CRS refers specifically to how the subject is taught and applied in secondary schools within Kwali Area Council to influence students’ character and behavior.

Moral Development: Moral development refers to the gradual process through which individuals, particularly children and adolescents, learn to distinguish right from wrong and adopt socially acceptable behaviors and ethical standards. It involves the internalization of moral values, decision-making skills, empathy, self-control, and a sense of justice. Moral development is influenced by various factors, including family, religion, school, peer groups, and society. In the context of this study, moral development is assessed based on how students’ behaviors and attitudes reflect the values taught through Christian Religious Studies in Kwali Area Council.

Students: For the purpose of this research, students refer to young individuals enrolled in public and private secondary schools within Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. These students are typically adolescents in the formative years of their education and character development. They represent the target population for evaluating the effectiveness of Christian Religious Studies in instilling moral values and reducing incidences of indiscipline, disrespect, and other negative behaviors.

Moral Values: Moral values are the fundamental ethical principles and social standards that guide individuals in making decisions and behaving in ways that are considered acceptable and virtuous in society. Examples of moral values include honesty, kindness, respect for others, responsibility, humility, tolerance, and self-control. These values form the bedrock of good citizenship and peaceful coexistence. In this study, moral values refer to those specifically emphasized in Christian Religious Studies and how they manifest in the conduct of students within the school environment.
