INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed the way businesses operate, compete, and deliver value to customers. Digital transformation (DT) refers to the strategic integration of digital technologies into all areas of an organization, leading to fundamental changes in business operations, models, and culture (Bharadwaj et al., 2013). For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), digital transformation offers a pathway to improve efficiency, agility, and competitiveness in an increasingly digital global economy. According to Vial (2019), digital transformation enhances operational efficiency by automating processes, improving data management, and facilitating real-time decision-making.

In Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, SMEs represent a critical component of the economy, contributing significantly to employment and GDP growth (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2022). However, many Lagos-based SMEs face operational inefficiencies due to poor process management, limited technological adoption, and inadequate access to data-driven insights (Oduro, 2020). The integration of digital technologies—such as cloud computing, big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital payment systems—has become increasingly essential for improving productivity and reducing operational costs (Adeola & Evans, 2020). Through digital transformation, SMEs can streamline operations, optimize supply chains, and enhance customer experience, thereby strengthening their competitive position in both local and global markets.

Despite the growing awareness of digital tools, the level of adoption among Nigerian SMEs remains relatively low (Aderemi et al., 2021). Many firms struggle with technological infrastructure, digital literacy gaps, and resistance to change (Osakwe et al., 2022). Furthermore, the cost of implementing new technologies, cybersecurity concerns, and regulatory constraints hinder the pace of digital transformation in the SME sector (Ogunyemi & Ajayi, 2023). Therefore, understanding the relationship between digital transformation and operational efficiency is critical to addressing these challenges and fostering sustainable business growth in Lagos.

Digital transformation can improve operational efficiency by minimizing redundancies, reducing manual processes, and enabling data-driven decision-making (Kraus et al., 2021). Through the adoption of digital tools such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), automation, and e-commerce platforms, SMEs can achieve faster service delivery, better inventory management, and improved customer satisfaction (Liu et al., 2020). However, realizing these benefits requires not only investment in technology but also organizational readiness, employee training, and leadership commitment (Susanti et al., 2023).

Thus, this study examines the impact of digital transformation on operational efficiency among Lagos-based SMEs, with the aim of identifying key enablers and barriers to digital adoption within the sector.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although SMEs in Lagos recognize the potential of digital technologies, many still operate below optimal efficiency levels due to low digital maturity. Several firms rely heavily on manual operations that slow down production cycles, increase costs, and limit competitiveness (Oduro, 2020). While large corporations benefit from advanced automation and integrated information systems, SMEs often struggle with fragmented processes and outdated tools (Aderemi et al., 2021). The gap between technological potential and actual implementation has created a digital divide that constrains operational efficiency.

Moreover, previous studies have established a positive link between digital transformation and firm performance in developed economies (Bai et al., 2020), but empirical evidence in developing contexts like Nigeria remains limited. Lagos-based SMEs encounter unique challenges such as inconsistent power supply, poor internet connectivity, limited technical expertise, and inadequate funding (Osakwe et al., 2022). These factors raise questions about the extent to which digital transformation initiatives contribute to improved operational efficiency in this environment. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by analyzing how digital transformation influences operational efficiency in SMEs operating in Lagos.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of digital transformation on operational efficiency in Lagos-based SMEs.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the level of digital transformation adoption among Lagos-based SMEs.

2. Examine the relationship between digital transformation and operational efficiency in SMEs.

3. Identify the key barriers to digital transformation implementation in Lagos-based SMEs.

4. Suggest strategies to enhance digital transformation for improved operational efficiency.

1.4 Research Questions

This study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. What is the level of digital transformation adoption among Lagos-based SMEs?

2. How does digital transformation influence operational efficiency in SMEs?

3. What are the major barriers hindering digital transformation in Lagos-based SMEs?

4. What strategies can improve digital transformation and operational efficiency in SMEs?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

To guide the study, the following hypothesis will be tested:

H₀: Digital transformation has no significant effect on operational efficiency among Lagos-based SMEs.
H₁: Digital transformation has a significant effect on operational efficiency among Lagos-based SMEs.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. For SME owners and managers, it provides insights into how digital transformation can be strategically leveraged to enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness. Policymakers and development agencies can use the findings to design supportive frameworks and digital infrastructure policies tailored for SMEs in Lagos and beyond. Academically, this research contributes to the growing body of literature on digital transformation in emerging markets, providing empirical evidence from Nigeria’s financial and business environment. Additionally, technology providers and consultants can use the results to understand SME digital needs and develop cost-effective solutions suitable for small businesses.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in Lagos State, Nigeria, across sectors such as retail, manufacturing, logistics, and professional services. It specifically examines the relationship between digital transformation (measured through technology adoption, process automation, and digital strategy) and operational efficiency (measured through productivity, cost reduction, and process improvement). The study covers the period 2020–2025, capturing the post-pandemic acceleration of digital adoption in the SME sector.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Digital Transformation: The strategic adoption of digital technologies to enhance business operations, models, and customer value (Bharadwaj et al., 2013).

• Operational Efficiency: The ability of a firm to deliver products and services effectively while minimizing costs and maximizing output (Kraus et al., 2021).

• SMEs: Small and Medium Enterprises as defined by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), with employment between 10 and 199 persons.

• Technology Adoption: The process through which firms embrace new technologies for process improvement and service delivery.

• Lagos-Based SMEs: Businesses registered and operating within Lagos State that fall under the SME classification.
