Project – The Expression of Christian Love as a Catalyst for Spiritual Growth and Community Development in the Nigerian Church. A Study of RCCG
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Love is the cornerstone of the Christian faith and the greatest expression of God’s nature. The Scriptures affirm that “God is love” (1 John 4:8), and the life and ministry of Jesus Christ demonstrated love as the foundation for spiritual growth and community transformation. Christian love, known as agape, is sacrificial, unconditional, and redemptive. It is expressed through service, compassion, and commitment to the welfare of others (Stott, 2006). In the New Testament, love is portrayed as the evidence of genuine discipleship and the key to building strong relationships within the body of Christ (John 13:34–35).
In the context of the Nigerian church, especially the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Christian love has been a significant theme in preaching, worship, and social action. The church’s commitment to evangelism, charity, and community development reflects its understanding of love as both spiritual and practical (Ajayi, 2018). However, the growing materialism, denominational rivalries, and social inequality within some Christian communities have challenged the visible expression of love among believers. True Christian love, therefore, must go beyond emotional affection and verbal declaration; it must translate into tangible actions that foster spiritual maturity and societal well-being (Ojo, 2020).
Christian love serves as a catalyst for spiritual growth, as it nurtures fellowship, unity, and obedience to God’s word (Ephesians 4:15–16). It also acts as a driving force for community development, motivating believers to engage in acts of service, education, empowerment, and social justice. In many Nigerian communities, churches like RCCG have contributed to societal progress through welfare programs, hospitals, schools, and poverty alleviation initiatives (Oladipo, 2021). These acts of love mirror Christ’s command to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40).
Despite these efforts, some Christians still struggle to demonstrate authentic love, particularly across ethnic, social, and denominational lines. The gap between spiritual profession and social practice raises questions about the church’s role in holistic transformation. Hence, this study seeks to examine the expression of Christian love as a catalyst for spiritual growth and community development, focusing on the Redeemed Christian Church of God as a case study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Nigerian church is one of the fastest-growing Christian movements in Africa, yet this growth does not always translate into corresponding moral, spiritual, and social transformation. While churches preach about love, many congregations still experience disunity, competition, and indifference toward societal challenges (Adebayo, 2019). Within some church settings, divisions arise due to class differences, leadership struggles, and lack of empathy among members. This contradicts the biblical injunction that love should be the unifying force of the Christian community (Colossians 3:14).
Moreover, though RCCG has made remarkable contributions to education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, the sustainability of these community development efforts often depends on the depth of love-inspired motivation among members and leaders (Olusola, 2021). In many cases, charity becomes an institutional activity rather than a spiritual expression of Christian love. Therefore, the question arises: how deeply is Christian love expressed in ways that promote both spiritual growth and community development in the Nigerian church?
This study, therefore, investigates how the expression of Christian love influences spiritual maturity and contributes to community development within the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the expression of Christian love as a catalyst for spiritual growth and community development in the Nigerian church, using RCCG as a case study.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Explore the biblical and theological understanding of Christian love among members of RCCG.
-
Examine how Christian love influences spiritual growth and maturity in the church.
-
Investigate how acts of love contribute to community development initiatives within RCCG.
-
Identify challenges that hinder the expression of genuine Christian love in the church.
-
Recommend biblical and practical strategies for strengthening love as a force for spiritual and social transformation.
1.4 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following research questions:
-
What is the biblical understanding of Christian love among members of RCCG?
-
How does Christian love influence spiritual growth within the church?
-
In what ways does Christian love contribute to community development initiatives?
-
What challenges hinder the practical expression of love in the church?
-
How can the RCCG strengthen the expression of love for greater impact on members and the community?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis:
-
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the expression of Christian love and the spiritual growth and community development of the church.
-
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the expression of Christian love and the spiritual growth and community development of the church.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several ways.
First, it contributes to theological understanding by linking Christian love with holistic transformation—spiritual, moral, and social. It deepens the appreciation of agape as both a personal virtue and a social responsibility.
Secondly, the study provides church leaders with insights into how love-based ministry can foster unity, discipleship, and societal impact. It will also guide the RCCG and similar denominations in aligning their community programs with biblical principles of compassion and service.
Finally, it serves as a reference material for theological students, scholars, and policymakers interested in the intersection of faith, ethics, and development in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), particularly selected parishes in Lagos State. It examines the understanding, practice, and outcomes of Christian love among church leaders and members. The scope covers the impact of love on spiritual growth, discipleship, social service, and community development. Although RCCG has branches worldwide, this study is limited to the Nigerian context, where socio-economic and cultural factors influence religious expression.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may face limitations such as limited access to church records on community projects and respondents’ reluctance to discuss sensitive internal matters. Time and financial constraints may also restrict the number of RCCG parishes covered. Nevertheless, adequate sampling, confidentiality, and objectivity will be maintained to ensure valid and reliable results.
