Project – The Contribution of the Church to Social Welfare and Community Development in Nigeria. A Study of RCCG
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The Church has historically played a significant role in addressing social needs and promoting community development across societies. Beyond its spiritual mandate of preaching the gospel, the Christian Church has often functioned as a social institution concerned with human welfare, justice, and development. From biblical times, the Church has been involved in caring for the poor, widows, orphans, and the marginalized, as exemplified in Acts 2:44–47 and Acts 6:1–7. These early Christian practices established a foundation for social responsibility that continues to shape the mission of the Church in contemporary societies.
In Nigeria, where socio-economic challenges such as poverty, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, poor educational facilities, and weak social welfare systems persist, faith-based organizations have become important contributors to social welfare and community development. The inability of government alone to adequately address these challenges has created space for religious institutions, particularly churches, to complement state efforts in improving the quality of life of citizens (Adeniyi, 2015). As a result, many churches now integrate social welfare and development initiatives into their ministries.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), founded in 1952 and restructured in the 1980s, is one of the largest Pentecostal churches in Nigeria and globally. With thousands of parishes across Nigeria and in over 190 countries, RCCG has established a strong institutional presence that extends beyond spiritual activities into social intervention programs. Through its various arms and initiatives, RCCG has been actively involved in education, healthcare delivery, poverty alleviation, youth empowerment, disaster relief, and community infrastructure development (Ukah, 2008).
RCCG’s social welfare initiatives include the establishment of schools and universities, hospitals and health outreaches, skills acquisition programs, scholarship schemes, and relief support for internally displaced persons and disaster-affected communities. Programs such as the RCCG Christian Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and the Redeemed Aids Programme Action Committee (RAPAC) demonstrate the church’s commitment to addressing social and developmental needs in Nigerian communities. These activities align with the church’s mission of holistic ministry, which emphasizes spiritual, social, and economic well-being.
Community development involves collective efforts aimed at improving the social, economic, and physical conditions of communities. The involvement of churches like RCCG in community development has helped foster social cohesion, moral values, and grassroots participation in development processes. In many Nigerian communities, RCCG parishes serve as centers for social support, civic engagement, and community mobilization, thereby contributing to local development.
Despite the visible contributions of RCCG to social welfare and community development, there is limited empirical research that systematically examines the scope, effectiveness, and sustainability of these contributions. While RCCG’s rapid growth and expansive social programs are widely acknowledged, questions remain regarding their impact on community development outcomes and how beneficiaries perceive these interventions. This study therefore seeks to examine the contribution of the Church to social welfare and community development in Nigeria, using RCCG as a case study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigeria continues to face serious social welfare and development challenges, including widespread poverty, inadequate access to quality education and healthcare, youth unemployment, and poor community infrastructure. Although government policies and programs exist to address these issues, their impact has often been limited by insufficient resources, corruption, and weak implementation mechanisms. Consequently, non-state actors such as churches have become increasingly involved in providing social welfare services and supporting community development.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God has emerged as a major player in this area, undertaking numerous social and developmental initiatives across Nigeria. However, despite the scale of RCCG’s activities, there is a lack of systematic scholarly assessment of how these interventions contribute to social welfare and community development at the community level. Much of the available information is descriptive or promotional, with limited empirical analysis of outcomes, effectiveness, and sustainability.
Furthermore, concerns have been raised about issues such as equitable access to church-provided welfare services, long-term dependency on religious organizations, and the alignment of church development initiatives with community needs. Without rigorous academic evaluation, it is difficult to determine whether RCCG’s contributions effectively complement government efforts or create parallel welfare structures that may not be sustainable.
The problem addressed by this study is the limited empirical understanding of the contribution of the Church, particularly RCCG, to social welfare and community development in Nigeria. This study seeks to examine the nature, scope, and perceived impact of RCCG’s social welfare and community development initiatives, thereby contributing to a balanced and scholarly understanding of the Church’s role in national development.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the contribution of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to social welfare and community development in Nigeria.
1.4 Objectives of the Study

examine RCCG’s role in community development initiatives;
-
assess the perceived impact of RCCG’s social welfare activities on beneficiaries;
-
identify challenges facing RCCG in the provision of social welfare and community development services.
1.5 Research Questions

1.6 Research Hypothesis
H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between RCCG’s social welfare activities and community development in Nigeria.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to church leaders, policymakers, development practitioners, and scholars by providing empirical insights into the role of churches in social welfare and community development. It will also contribute to academic literature on religion and development in Nigeria and inform future collaboration between government and faith-based organizations.
