INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture plays a central role in Nigeria’s economy, providing food, employment, and income for millions of households. In Lokoja, Kogi State, smallholder farming forms the backbone of local livelihoods, with the majority of households engaged in rain-fed crop and livestock production (Abiodun & Adepoju, 2020). Smallholder farmers often rely on traditional methods and local knowledge to manage farming activities, making them highly dependent on seasonal rainfall patterns for planting, growth, and harvest cycles.
Seasonal rainfall variability—characterized by changes in onset, duration, intensity, and distribution—has become a major challenge for farmers in Lokoja. Reports indicate increasing unpredictability in rainfall, including delayed rainy seasons, shorter rainfall periods, and uneven distribution across the cropping calendar (NMA, 2021). These changes threaten not only crop yields but also the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, who often lack access to irrigation, modern farming inputs, and financial support to mitigate climate risks (Odewumi et al., 2019).
Sustainable farming, which emphasizes efficient resource use, environmental stewardship, and long-term productivity, is particularly vulnerable to rainfall variability (FAO, 2017). 1.2 Statement of the Problem
Smallholder farmers in Lokoja are highly dependent on rainfall for their agricultural activities. However, the region has experienced increasing variability in seasonal rainfall, including delayed onset, irregular distribution, and shortened rainy seasons. These changes disrupt farming calendars, reduce crop yields, and threaten the sustainability of farming practices (Oladele et al., 2018).
Despite the importance of rainfall to smallholder agriculture, there is limited empirical evidence on how seasonal rainfall variability specifically affects the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and the sustainability of their farming practices in Lokoja. Most existing studies are either broad, covering multiple states, or focus solely on climate change without linking it to farm-level socio-economic outcomes. This knowledge gap makes it difficult for policymakers, agricultural extension officers, and farmers to implement effective strategies for adaptation and resilience.
Additionally, smallholder farmers face multiple challenges, including inadequate access to irrigation, limited capital, low adoption of improved farming techniques, and insufficient climate information. These challenges exacerbate the impact of rainfall variability, increasing the risk of crop failure, income loss, and food insecurity. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the effects of seasonal rainfall variability on both the livelihoods and sustainable farming practices of smallholder farmers in Lokoja to inform interventions that enhance resilience and productivity.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of seasonal rainfall variability on smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and sustainable farming practices in Lokoja, Kogi State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Hypothesis
The study is guided by the following hypothesis:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between seasonal rainfall variability and smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and sustainable farming practices in Lokoja, Kogi State.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between seasonal rainfall variability and smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and sustainable farming practices in Lokoja, Kogi State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant to farmers, policymakers, and researchers. Farmers will benefit from a better understanding of rainfall patterns and their effect on farm productivity and livelihood sustainability. Policymakers and government agencies can use the findings to design climate-adaptive agricultural policies and support programs. Agricultural extension services can provide targeted advisory services based on the study’s insights. Additionally, the research contributes to the existing literature on climate variability, sustainable agriculture, and smallholder farming in Nigeria, offering a localized perspective for Lokoja.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on smallholder farmers in Lokoja, Kogi State, examining the effects of seasonal rainfall variability on their livelihoods and sustainable farming practices. While rainfall is the primary climate variable studied, other factors like temperature, soil fertility, and socio-economic variables are acknowledged but not analyzed in detail. The study includes farmers practicing crop farming, livestock farming, and mixed farming within the study area.
