INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Ethical behavior is a cornerstone of societal cohesion and personal development, especially during adolescence, a critical stage of moral, emotional, and cognitive growth. Adolescents often face challenges in distinguishing right from wrong, making decisions, and managing peer pressure (Kohlberg, 1984). In many societies, religious education is considered a key mechanism for fostering ethical behavior, instilling moral values, and guiding adolescents toward responsible citizenship.

Biblical study, typically conducted in churches, youth fellowships, or Christian study groups, is one of the primary avenues through which adolescents learn moral principles and ethical conduct based on Christian teachings. Participation in biblical study involves reading scripture, engaging in discussions, applying biblical lessons to daily life, and reflecting on moral dilemmas in light of Christian values (Smith & Denton, 2005). The premise is that regular attendance at biblical study sessions reinforces ethical principles such as honesty, integrity, respect for authority, empathy, and self-discipline.

Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos State is a densely populated urban community with a significant Christian population. Churches in the area offer regular biblical study programs targeted at adolescents, often combining scriptural reading, interactive discussions, group activities, and mentorship from youth leaders and pastors. Despite the availability of these programs, anecdotal evidence suggests varying levels of ethical behavior among adolescents in the community. Some adolescents demonstrate strong adherence to ethical standards, while others engage in misconduct such as lying, cheating, disrespect, bullying, or substance misuse (Adebayo, 2018).

The effectiveness of biblical study in promoting ethical behavior may be influenced by factors such as frequency of attendance, teaching methods, the adolescent’s engagement level, parental support, and peer influence. Additionally, urban pressures, exposure to social media, and peer group dynamics may challenge the consistent application of ethical teachings (Okeke, 2017). Understanding the relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior is crucial for youth leaders, parents, and policymakers seeking to strengthen moral education and guide adolescents toward positive conduct.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread implementation of biblical study programs for adolescents in Ikorodu LGA, concerns persist regarding the ethical behavior of participants. Reports from churches, schools, and community observers indicate that while some adolescents exhibit strong ethical conduct, many continue to engage in behaviors inconsistent with biblical teachings, such as dishonesty, aggression, and defiance of authority (Adebayo, 2018).

Several factors may contribute to this discrepancy. First, irregular attendance in biblical study sessions limits exposure to ethical teachings and reinforcement of moral principles. Second, some programs may emphasize scripture memorization over practical application, reducing the impact on ethical behavior. Third, adolescents face external influences from peers, social media, and urban culture that may conflict with the moral values taught in biblical study (Okeke, 2017).

This inconsistency highlights a critical gap in understanding the effectiveness of biblical study programs in shaping ethical behavior among adolescents. Without empirical research, church leaders, parents, and educators may struggle to design interventions that effectively translate biblical teachings into practical ethical conduct. This study aims to investigate the relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents in Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents in Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State. The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the frequency of adolescent attendance in biblical study programs in Ikorodu LGA.

2. To assess the level of ethical behavior among adolescents in Ikorodu LGA.

3. To examine the relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents.

4. To identify factors influencing the ethical behavior of adolescents in the community.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What is the frequency of adolescent attendance in biblical study programs in Ikorodu LGA?

2. What is the level of ethical behavior among adolescents in Ikorodu LGA?

3. What is the relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents?

4. What factors influence the ethical behavior of adolescents in the community?

1.5 Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents in Ikorodu LGA.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents in Ikorodu LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are expected to be beneficial in several ways:

• For church leaders and youth mentors: It will provide insights into the effectiveness of biblical study programs and guide the development of strategies to enhance ethical behavior among adolescents.

• For parents and guardians: It will highlight the importance of encouraging consistent participation in biblical study programs to foster ethical development.

• For educators and policymakers: It will inform initiatives and policies aimed at integrating moral education with religious programs in urban communities.

• For researchers: It will serve as a foundation for further studies on adolescent moral development, religious education, and ethical behavior.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on adolescents aged 12–18 years attending biblical study programs in churches within Ikorodu LGA, Lagos State. It examines the frequency of attendance, the ethical behavior of adolescents, the relationship between attendance and ethical conduct, and the factors influencing ethical behavior. The study is limited to the academic year under review and to participants actively involved in church-based biblical study programs.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Biblical Study Attendance: The regularity with which adolescents participate in church or Christian youth programs focused on studying the Bible.

• Ethical Behavior: Actions and decisions guided by moral principles such as honesty, integrity, respect, empathy, and responsibility.

• Adolescents: Individuals aged 12–18 years undergoing the transition from childhood to adulthood.

• Relationship: The statistical association or connection between biblical study attendance and ethical behavior among adolescents.
