Project – Influence of Work-Life Balance on Employee Productivity: A Case Study of Government Parastatals in Kaduna North LGA, Kaduna State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Work-life balance (WLB) has emerged as a critical factor affecting employee performance, satisfaction, and overall organizational productivity. Work-life balance refers to the equilibrium between professional responsibilities and personal life commitments, including family, health, social activities, and personal development (Greenhaus & Allen, 2011). Employees who achieve a healthy work-life balance are better able to manage stress, maintain motivation, and demonstrate high levels of engagement and productivity in their organizations.
In the context of government parastatals, work-life balance is particularly significant. Employees in public institutions often face high workloads, bureaucratic constraints, and rigid schedules, which can lead to work-related stress, burnout, and reduced productivity (Ezeani & Nwankwo, 2021). Ensuring that staff have sufficient flexibility, reasonable working hours, and opportunities for personal development can improve job satisfaction and efficiency.
Kaduna North LGA, as an administrative and commercial hub in Kaduna State, hosts several government parastatals responsible for service delivery across health, education, infrastructure, and regulatory sectors. These parastatals play an essential role in implementing government policies and programs. However, anecdotal reports suggest that employees frequently experience excessive work pressure, lack of flexible schedules, and insufficient attention to personal well-being, which can adversely affect productivity and the quality of services rendered (Abubakar & Bala, 2019).
Globally, research indicates that organizations implementing effective work-life balance policies—such as flexible work schedules, telecommuting, childcare support, and leave arrangements—experience higher employee productivity, lower absenteeism, and reduced turnover (Kossek, Baltes, & Matthews, 2011). In Nigeria, while some private organizations have embraced WLB initiatives, public sector institutions are often slow to implement such practices. Understanding how work-life balance influences employee productivity in government parastatals in Kaduna North LGA is therefore crucial for improving organizational efficiency, employee well-being, and service delivery.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of work-life balance, many government parastatals in Kaduna North LGA face challenges in ensuring that employees can balance their professional and personal responsibilities effectively. Employees often encounter excessive workloads, extended working hours, limited flexibility, and inadequate support for personal and family needs (Abubakar & Bala, 2019).
This imbalance contributes to reduced employee motivation, high stress levels, burnout, absenteeism, and diminished productivity. Moreover, the lack of structured work-life balance policies undermines job satisfaction and the overall efficiency of public service delivery. While some parastatals provide minimal leave entitlements and occasional welfare programs, these initiatives are often insufficient to address the growing demands of employees (Ezeani & Nwankwo, 2021).
Given the critical role of government parastatals in service delivery and the potential impact of employee productivity on organizational outcomes, it is imperative to investigate the influence of work-life balance on productivity. This study aims to provide empirical insights into how work-life balance policies and practices affect employee performance in Kaduna North LGA.
