Project – The Impact of Digital Marketing on Consumer Engagement in GTBank, Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Background of the Study
In the 21st century, digital technologies have radically transformed how organizations communicate with consumers and create value. Digital marketing—defined as the use of digital channels such as social media, search engines, email, mobile apps, and websites to promote products and engage customers—has become a cornerstone of modern business strategy (Chaffey & Ellis‑Chadwick, 2019). What once was limited to traditional media such as radio, television, and billboards has now expanded into interactive, measurable, and personalized digital platforms.
Consumer engagement refers to the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral investment customers make in brand interactions that go beyond transactions (Hollebeek, 2011). It is a shift from one‑way communication to dynamic interaction where consumers co‑create meaning with brands (Brodie et al., 2011). Digital marketing channels such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, email newsletters, and mobile banking alerts allow firms to reach customers instantaneously, build relationships, and foster brand loyalty.
In Nigeria, digital marketing adoption has grown exponentially in the last decade. Increasing internet penetration—estimated at over 50% of the population—and widespread smartphone usage have encouraged businesses to migrate many of their marketing functions online (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2023). Financial institutions, in particular, have adopted digital platforms not only for service delivery but also for customer engagement and brand communication. Among these institutions is Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), one of Nigeria’s biggest banks with a strong digital presence.
GTBank has become well‑known for its innovative use of digital channels. The bank operates active social media accounts, maintains a responsive website, uses email campaigns, and employs digital adverts to communicate with its customers. These platforms are designed not only to advertise products but also to inform, educate, and engage customers with interactive content, customer service, and personalized messaging (Okpara, 2021). However, questions remain about how effectively these digital marketing efforts translate into meaningful consumer engagement.
Research suggests that effective digital marketing enhances customer engagement, leading to increased brand loyalty, customer satisfaction, and repeat usage (Kumar et al., 2016; Malthouse et al., 2013). On the other hand, poorly managed digital campaigns can result in consumer indifference or negative perceptions, particularly in markets where digital literacy varies widely (Tiago & Veríssimo, 2014). Within the Nigerian banking sector, empirical work on the nexus between digital marketing and consumer engagement remains limited, and even fewer studies focus on specific institutions such as GTBank.
Therefore, an investigation into how digital marketing influences consumer engagement in GTBank, Lagos State, is timely, significant, and practically relevant for marketers, financial institutions, and consumers alike.
1.1 Statement of the Problem
Despite growing investments in digital marketing by GTBank, there is anecdotal evidence and practical concern that these efforts may not be optimizing consumer engagement as expected. Some consumers report limited interaction or feedback on digital platforms, while others indicate that the bank’s digital communication feels impersonal or irrelevant (Ejike, 2022). Additionally, while GTBank’s digital channels attract high traffic, it is unclear whether this translates into meaningful engagement—such as repeat interactions, feedback, referrals, or brand advocacy.
Furthermore, existing literature in Nigeria is fragmented and mainly descriptive, with few empirical studies focusing specifically on the connection between digital marketing strategies and consumer engagement in the banking industry (Adebayo, 2020). There is also a dearth of research that disaggregates different digital marketing tools to determine which ones most effectively drive engagement among bank customers.
Without deep empirical insight, GTBank and similar institutions risk allocating resources inefficiently, investing in channels that garner reach but fail at fostering authentic consumer participation. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of digital marketing on consumer engagement in GTBank, Lagos State, to provide evidence‑based recommendations for digital strategy optimization.
