Project – Effect of Digital Marketing Training on Small Business Performance: A Case Study of SMEs in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State
CHAPTER ONE:
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in economic growth, employment generation, and poverty alleviation in developing countries like Nigeria. According to the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN, 2021), SMEs contribute about 48% of Nigeria’s GDP and provide over 80% of employment in the private sector. However, despite their economic significance, SMEs often face challenges in sustaining growth due to limited access to finance, poor marketing strategies, low technological adoption, and inadequate managerial skills (Owolabi & Balogun, 2020).
The rapid digitalization of commerce has transformed business operations worldwide, making digital marketing an essential tool for SMEs to reach customers, enhance brand visibility, and increase sales (Chaffey & Ellis-Chadwick, 2019). Digital marketing encompasses the use of online platforms, social media, email campaigns, search engine optimization, and other internet-based tools to promote products and services. For SMEs in Nigeria, digital marketing offers cost-effective solutions for reaching broader markets, competing with larger firms, and improving operational efficiency.
Digital marketing training equips SME owners and managers with the skills and knowledge required to leverage online tools effectively. Training covers areas such as website management, social media marketing, content creation, analytics, and digital advertising. Research has shown that SMEs that participate in digital marketing training programs often report improved sales, customer engagement, and business sustainability (Aremu & Adeyemi, 2020). Despite these benefits, many SMEs in Kano Municipal Local Government Area (LGA) still rely on traditional marketing methods, limiting their growth potential and competitiveness in the digital era.
Kano Municipal LGA, being the commercial hub of Kano State, hosts a wide variety of SMEs across retail, manufacturing, services, and agro-processing sectors. These SMEs operate in a highly competitive environment and face increasing pressure to adopt modern marketing techniques. While some entrepreneurs have embraced digital tools, many lack the necessary skills to implement effective digital marketing strategies, resulting in missed opportunities for business growth (Garba & Usman, 2021).
Understanding the effect of digital marketing training on SME performance is therefore crucial. By evaluating how training influences sales, customer reach, and overall business sustainability, stakeholders—including government agencies, business associations, and development organizations—can design programs that enhance SME competitiveness, growth, and contribution to the local economy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Small businesses in Kano Municipal LGA constitute a vital segment of the local economy. However, many SMEs struggle with limited market access, low brand awareness, and declining sales due to ineffective marketing strategies. Although digital marketing provides opportunities for growth and competitive advantage, SME owners often lack the skills to implement and manage online marketing campaigns effectively.
Many entrepreneurs have not received formal training in digital marketing, resulting in low adoption of digital tools such as social media advertising, email marketing, website optimization, and search engine marketing. This skills gap limits their ability to reach new customers, retain existing ones, and increase revenue. While government and private initiatives offer digital skills training, the impact of such programs on SME performance in Kano Municipal LGA remains largely unexamined (Aremu & Adeyemi, 2020; Garba & Usman, 2021).
Consequently, there is limited empirical evidence on whether digital marketing training translates into measurable improvements in business outcomes such as sales growth, customer engagement, and operational sustainability among SMEs in Kano Municipal. This knowledge gap hinders the development of effective interventions aimed at equipping entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital economy. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the effect of digital marketing training on the performance of SMEs in Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State.
