INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is widely recognized as a fundamental instrument for national development, social transformation, and economic growth. It serves as the foundation for building human capital and equipping individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for productive living. In the educational system, teachers play a vital role in determining the quality of learning outcomes among students. The effectiveness of teachers is often influenced by their academic and professional qualifications, which determine their ability to deliver instruction effectively and facilitate meaningful learning experiences.
Teacher qualification refers to the academic credentials, professional training, and teaching certifications possessed by teachers that enable them to perform their instructional duties competently. It includes degrees in education or subject-related fields, professional teaching certifications, and pedagogical training acquired through formal education or professional development programs. Qualified teachers are expected to possess both subject matter expertise and teaching skills that enable them to communicate concepts clearly and guide students toward achieving academic success.

Therefore, the qualification of teachers remains a crucial factor in determining the effectiveness of teaching and learning in chemistry. When teachers are adequately trained and professionally qualified, they are more capable of guiding students toward better understanding and improved academic performance. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of teachers’ qualification on secondary school students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Chemistry is a fundamental science subject that plays a vital role in scientific advancement and technological development. It is also a compulsory subject for students who intend to pursue science-related careers in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, engineering, and environmental science. However, despite its importance, students’ academic achievement in chemistry at the secondary school level has remained relatively low in many schools.
One of the factors that may influence students’ academic performance in chemistry is the qualification of the teachers responsible for teaching the subject. In many secondary schools, especially in developing regions, there is often a shortage of professionally trained chemistry teachers. As a result, teachers who lack adequate qualifications or specialization in chemistry are sometimes assigned to teach the subject. Such teachers may not possess sufficient knowledge of chemistry concepts or the pedagogical skills required to teach the subject effectively.
The absence of properly qualified chemistry teachers may lead to ineffective teaching methods, poor explanation of scientific concepts, limited use of laboratory experiments, and inadequate engagement of students in the learning process. Consequently, students may develop negative attitudes toward the subject, lose interest in learning chemistry, and perform poorly in both internal and external examinations.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of teachers’ qualification on secondary school students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of teachers’ qualification on secondary school students’ academic achievement in chemistry. Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Examine the influence of teachers’ academic qualification on students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
- Determine the effect of teachers’ professional teaching qualification on students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
- Investigate the influence of teachers’ years of teaching experience on students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
- Examine the impact of teachers’ subject specialization in chemistry on students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will guide the study:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between teachers’ qualification and students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between teachers’ qualification and students’ academic achievement in chemistry.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to several stakeholders in the education sector including students, teachers, school administrators, and educational policymakers.
The study will help teachers understand the importance of acquiring appropriate academic and professional qualifications in order to improve their teaching effectiveness and students’ academic performance.

1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of teachers’ qualification on secondary school students’ academic achievement in chemistry. The study specifically examines how teachers’ academic qualifications, professional teaching qualifications, teaching experience, and subject specialization influence students’ understanding and performance in chemistry.
The research is limited to selected secondary schools in Ikorodu within Lagos State. Five selected secondary schools in Ikorodu will be used for the study, and the participants will include chemistry teachers and secondary school students in those schools.
The study concentrates on examining the relationship between teachers’ qualifications and students’ academic achievement in chemistry, using responses obtained from the selected schools. Other factors that may influence students’ performance, such as school facilities, students’ personal attitudes, parental background, and availability of laboratory equipment, are not the primary focus of this study.
1.8 Definition of Terms
For clarity and proper understanding of this study, the following terms are defined as they are used in the research:
Teacher Qualification: Teacher qualification refers to the academic degrees, professional certifications, and training obtained by teachers that enable them to effectively teach and manage classroom instruction.
Academic Qualification: Academic qualification refers to the educational level attained by a teacher, such as a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or other relevant academic credentials in a specific subject or field of study.
Professional Qualification: Professional qualification refers to specialized training in education that prepares an individual for the teaching profession, such as a teaching certificate, diploma in education, or a degree in education.
Teaching Experience: Teaching experience refers to the number of years a teacher has spent teaching students in a formal classroom setting.
Subject Specialization: Subject specialization refers to the area of academic concentration or field in which a teacher has received formal training, such as chemistry education or pure chemistry.
Academic Achievement: Academic achievement refers to the level of success attained by students in their studies, usually measured through tests, examinations, and other forms of academic assessment.
