INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Holiness is a central tenet of Christian theology, emphasizing moral purity, spiritual dedication, and separation from sin as outlined in the Bible. The concept of holiness is derived from passages such as Leviticus 19:2, which commands, “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy,” and 1 Peter 1:16, which reiterates the call to live a holy life. Biblical holiness involves both inward transformation—through faith, obedience, and sanctification—and outward conduct, reflecting God’s character in daily living (Piper, 2017). The pursuit of holiness is considered essential for spiritual growth, moral integrity, and the practical application of Christian principles in everyday life (Sproul, 2018).

In the Nigerian context, Pentecostal and apostolic churches have placed a strong emphasis on holiness as a lifestyle, teaching believers to live above worldly influences and demonstrate ethical conduct in personal, familial, and societal interactions (Eze, 2016). The Apostolic Church, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is one such denomination that actively teaches biblical holiness through sermons, discipleship programs, and community engagement activities. The church emphasizes both personal sanctification and ethical responsibility, seeking to influence the behavior and decision-making of its members in their daily lives (Okafor, 2019).

Despite the theological emphasis on holiness, many Christians face challenges in consistently applying these principles due to societal pressures, cultural influences, and personal struggles with sin. Holiness is not only a theological ideal but also a practical guide for ethical decision-making, interpersonal conduct, and moral responsibility (Osuagwu, 2018). 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although the call to holiness is clear in Scripture, many believers in Nigerian churches, including The Apostolic Church, Port Harcourt, struggle to consistently demonstrate holy living in their personal, professional, and social contexts. The problem lies in translating biblical teachings on holiness into practical behaviors that influence daily decision-making, relationships, and moral integrity (Eze, 2016).

Members may understand the theological concept of holiness but fail to apply it consistently due to peer pressure, workplace challenges, or lack of practical guidance. This inconsistency can lead to moral compromise, spiritual stagnation, and diminished witness within the community (Okafor, 2019). Additionally, there is a lack of empirical research exploring the influence of biblical holiness teachings on the daily practices of believers in Nigerian apostolic churches, particularly in urban centers such as Port Harcourt. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the biblical understanding of holiness and its influence on the daily living of members of The Apostolic Church, Rivers State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to investigate the biblical understanding of holiness and its influence on daily living among members of The Apostolic Church, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine members’ understanding of biblical holiness.

2. Determine how the principles of holiness influence personal decision-making and moral conduct.

3. Assess the impact of holiness teachings on interpersonal relationships and community interactions.

4. Identify challenges that hinder the practical application of holiness in daily life.

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: Biblical teachings on holiness have no significant influence on the daily living of members of The Apostolic Church, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

H₁: Biblical teachings on holiness have a significant influence on the daily living of members of The Apostolic Church, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides church leaders and pastors with empirical insights on how teachings on holiness influence members’ daily conduct, enabling them to develop targeted programs for spiritual formation and moral guidance. Second, it benefits believers by illustrating practical ways to integrate biblical principles into everyday life, fostering ethical decision-making, personal integrity, and consistent spiritual growth. Third, it contributes to theological scholarship by linking biblical doctrine with observable behavioral outcomes, offering a reference for future research in practical theology, discipleship, and ethical living. Finally, it informs Christian training institutions and seminaries on effective methods for teaching and mentoring believers in the pursuit of holiness.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to members of The Apostolic Church, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It focuses on the biblical understanding of holiness and its influence on personal, social, and professional behavior in daily life. The study does not examine other churches, denominations, or historical perspectives on holiness outside this specific context.

1.8 Definition of Terms

1. Holiness – The state of being set apart, morally pure, and dedicated to God’s service, both inwardly in character and outwardly in conduct (Sproul, 2018).

2. Biblical Understanding – Knowledge and interpretation of Scripture as it relates to principles, values, and teachings for daily living (Piper, 2017).

3. Daily Living – The everyday actions, decisions, and behaviors of individuals in personal, social, and professional contexts.

4. The Apostolic Church – A Pentecostal denomination in Nigeria that emphasizes holiness, discipleship, and ethical living among its members (Okafor, 2019).
