INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is a fundamental social institution that serves as the foundation for family life and societal continuity. In Nigeria, marriage is not merely a union between two individuals but an alliance between families, kinship groups, and communities. This collectivist orientation is particularly evident in many ethnic groups, including the Igbo of South-Eastern Nigeria, where extended family systems play a crucial role in marital affairs (Nwoye, 2007; Isiugo-Abanihe, 1994). Within this framework, in-laws—defined as relatives gained through marriage—become key stakeholders in the marital relationship.

In traditional Nigerian society, the involvement of in-laws begins from the courtship stage and continues throughout the marriage lifecycle. They participate in decision-making processes such as bride price negotiations, conflict mediation, child upbringing, and even financial support (Adegoke, 2010). In Enugu State, which is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group, cultural norms emphasize respect for elders and family authority, thereby granting in-laws significant influence over marital dynamics.

The role of in-laws can be both constructive and disruptive. On one hand, in-laws often provide emotional support, guidance, and mediation during conflicts. Their experience and authority can help couples navigate marital challenges and maintain stability (Amato & Rogers, 1997). For instance, in many Igbo communities, elders from both families are invited to intervene in disputes before they escalate into separation or divorce. This traditional conflict resolution mechanism has historically contributed to the longevity of marriages.

On the other hand, excessive interference by in-laws has been identified as a major source of marital conflict. Issues such as control over household decisions, favoritism, financial expectations, and cultural pressures can strain relationships between spouses (Omoniyi, 2016). In some cases, conflicts between a spouse and their in-laws may spill over into the marital relationship, leading to dissatisfaction, emotional distress, and even marital breakdown. This dual role of in-laws highlights the complexity of their influence on marital stability.

Modernization, urbanization, and changing socio-economic conditions have further complicated the role of in-laws in contemporary Nigerian marriages. While some couples prefer autonomy and nuclear family structures, traditional expectations of extended family involvement persist. This tension often creates conflicts, especially among younger couples who may perceive in-law interference as intrusive (Okonjo, 2010). In Enugu State, where both traditional and modern values coexist, understanding the role of in-laws in marital relationships is particularly important.

Despite the significance of in-laws in marital life, scholarly attention has largely focused on spousal relationships, communication patterns, and economic factors influencing marital stability, with limited emphasis on extended family dynamics. Given the persistent influence of in-laws in Nigerian marriages, there is a need for empirical investigation into how their roles affect marital stability and conflict resolution.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the role of in-laws in marital stability and conflict resolution, with a focus on selected families in Enugu State. It aims to explore both the positive and negative dimensions of in-law involvement and their implications for marital outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marital instability has become an increasing concern in Nigeria, with rising cases of separation, divorce, and domestic conflict reported across different regions. While various factors such as economic hardship, infidelity, and communication breakdown have been identified as contributors to marital instability, the role of in-laws remains underexplored despite its cultural significance.

In Enugu State, the traditional Igbo family structure places considerable authority and responsibility on in-laws in marital affairs. While this system is designed to promote unity and provide support for couples, it has also been associated with numerous challenges. In many cases, in-laws interfere in decision-making processes, impose cultural expectations, and exert pressure on spouses, which may lead to tension and conflict within the marriage.

Furthermore, conflicts between spouses and their in-laws are often difficult to manage due to the hierarchical nature of family relationships. Younger couples may find it challenging to confront or resist in-law interference without being perceived as disrespectful. This can result in suppressed grievances, emotional strain, and unresolved conflicts that negatively affect marital stability.

Another critical issue is the inconsistency in the role of in-laws in conflict resolution. While some in-laws act as mediators and peacemakers, others may take sides, escalate disputes, or prioritize family interests over the well-being of the couple. Such actions can undermine trust and exacerbate marital problems rather than resolve them.

Additionally, the transition from traditional to modern family systems has created ambiguity in the expectations of in-law involvement. Couples in urban areas of Enugu State often seek independence, while their families may still expect active participation in marital affairs. This mismatch in expectations frequently leads to conflict and dissatisfaction.

Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical research specifically examining how in-laws influence marital stability and conflict resolution in Enugu State. Most existing studies generalize family influence without addressing the unique roles played by in-laws in different cultural contexts.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the lack of comprehensive understanding of how in-laws contribute to marital stability and conflict resolution, particularly in the socio-cultural context of Enugu State. By investigating this issue, the study aims to provide insights that can inform family counseling practices, policy formulation, and community-based interventions to strengthen marital relationships.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What roles do in-laws play in marital relationships in Enugu State?

2. How do in-laws contribute to marital stability among couples?

3. In what ways do in-laws influence conflict resolution in marriage?

4. What challenges arise from in-law involvement in marital affairs?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine the role of in-laws in marital stability and conflict resolution.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the roles played by in-laws in marital relationships.

2. Examine the influence of in-laws on marital stability.

3. Assess the role of in-laws in conflict resolution between couples.

4. Determine the challenges associated with in-law involvement in marriage.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: In-laws have no significant influence on marital stability and conflict resolution among couples in Enugu State.

H₁: In-laws have a significant influence on marital stability and conflict resolution among couples in Enugu State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways:

• Academic Contribution: It will add to existing literature on family sociology and marital studies by focusing on the often-overlooked role of in-laws.

• Couples and Families: The findings will help couples understand how to manage relationships with in-laws effectively.

• Marriage Counselors: It will provide insights for counselors and therapists in addressing marital conflicts involving extended family members.

• Policy Makers and Community Leaders: The study may inform policies and programs aimed at strengthening family systems and promoting marital stability.

1.7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses on the role of in-laws in marital stability and conflict resolution among selected families in Enugu State. It examines both positive and negative influences of in-laws within the marital context.

The study is limited to selected families and may not fully represent all cultural variations across Nigeria. It also focuses specifically on in-law relationships and does not extensively cover other factors affecting marital stability.

1.8 Definition of Key Terms
