INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christianity, as a global religion, is characterized by a rich diversity of traditions, doctrines, and worship practices across various denominations. Among the most significant aspects of Christian religious life are the annual celebrations of Easter and Christmas, which commemorate the resurrection and birth of Jesus Christ respectively. These two festivals are central to Christian theology, representing the core doctrines of salvation, redemption, and incarnation.

The celebration of Easter and Christmas is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, particularly in the New Testament accounts of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. While these events are universally acknowledged by Christians, the manner in which they are interpreted and celebrated varies significantly across denominations. These variations reflect differences in theological emphasis, liturgical traditions, cultural influences, and historical development.

Denominational diversity within Christianity includes groups such as the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Communion, and Pentecostalism, among others. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

These differences, while reflective of theological diversity, may lead to inconsistencies in the understanding and practice of these important events.

One major problem is that denominational differences can create confusion among believers, particularly in contexts where multiple Christian traditions coexist. Variations in liturgy, doctrine, and worship styles may result in differing interpretations of the significance of Easter and Christmas, potentially weakening the unity of Christian faith.

Additionally, the emphasis placed on these festivals varies among denominations. 1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine denominational differences in the celebration of Easter and Christmas in contemporary churches. The specific objectives are to:
