Project – Impact of Laboratory Practical Activities on Students’ Understanding of Biology Concepts in Secondary Schools in Ikoyi, Lagos
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Science education plays a vital role in the development of any nation, particularly in promoting technological advancement, innovation, and problem-solving skills among learners. Among the science subjects taught in secondary schools, Biology occupies a central position because it deals with the study of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. Biology provides foundational knowledge for careers in medicine, agriculture, nursing, biotechnology, environmental science, and other health-related disciplines.
In Nigeria, Biology is one of the core science subjects at the senior secondary school level and is a key requirement for students pursuing science-based careers. However, despite its importance, students’ performance and understanding of Biology concepts have remained relatively poor over the years. One major reason identified for this persistent challenge is the dominance of theoretical (lecture-based) teaching methods over practical, hands-on learning experiences.
Laboratory practical activities are an essential component of effective Biology instruction. They involve students actively engaging in experiments, observations, measurement, and manipulation of biological materials and equipment. These activities allow learners to connect theoretical concepts with real-life phenomena, thereby enhancing comprehension and retention of knowledge. Studies have shown that students who participate in laboratory-based learning tend to develop stronger conceptual understanding and better science process skills compared to those taught using only lecture methods .
Practical activities in Biology also help students to develop critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. Through direct interaction with specimens, microscopes, and experimental setups, learners are able to visualize abstract biological processes such as osmosis, photosynthesis, cell division, and respiration. This experiential learning approach makes learning more meaningful and reduces rote memorization.
However, in many secondary schools in Nigeria, including those in urban areas such as Ikoyi, Lagos State, laboratory activities are often underutilized due to factors such as inadequate laboratory facilities, large class sizes, lack of instructional materials, and insufficient time allocation for practical work. As a result, Biology is often taught in a theoretical manner, which limits students’ ability to fully grasp and apply biological concepts.
Research indicates that when students are exposed to well-organized laboratory practicals, they show improved academic achievement and deeper understanding of scientific concepts compared to those taught through traditional lecture methods . Therefore, there is a need to investigate how laboratory practical activities influence students’ understanding of Biology concepts, particularly in secondary schools within Ikoyi, Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of Biology as a core science subject, students’ understanding and academic performance in the subject remain unsatisfactory in many secondary schools in Nigeria. A major concern is that many students struggle to comprehend basic Biology concepts such as cell structure, genetics, nutrition, respiration, and ecological relationships.
One of the contributing factors to this problem is the limited use of laboratory practical activities in the teaching and learning of Biology. In many schools, Biology lessons are still largely teacher-centred, relying heavily on lecture methods with minimal student participation in practical work. This situation deprives learners of opportunities to actively engage with scientific materials and observe biological processes firsthand.
Evidence suggests that lack of adequate laboratory activities reduces students’ interest, motivation, and ability to retain biological knowledge. When practical experiences are not properly integrated into teaching, Biology becomes abstract and difficult for students to understand. Studies have also shown that poor laboratory organization, inadequate equipment, and insufficient exposure to experiments contribute significantly to students’ poor achievement in Biology .
Furthermore, students in some schools may complete Biology lessons without meaningful hands-on experience, which weakens their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. This gap between theory and practice has continued to affect students’ academic performance and overall understanding of Biology concepts.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of laboratory practical activities on students’ understanding of Biology concepts in secondary schools in Ikoyi, Lagos State.
