INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Biology is a fundamental science subject that deals with the study of living organisms, their structures, functions, growth, and interactions with the environment. It serves as a foundation for many professional fields such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental science. At the secondary school level, Biology is one of the core science subjects required for students pursuing science-related careers in Nigeria.
One of the key areas in Biology is cell biology, which focuses on the cell as the basic structural and functional unit of life. Concepts such as cell structure, cell organelles, and their functions are abstract in nature and often difficult for students to understand when taught only through verbal explanation. To address this challenge, science educators emphasize the importance of practical-based learning, especially the use of microscopes in teaching cell biology.
Microscopic practical activities allow students to directly observe cells, tissues, and microorganisms that are not visible to the naked eye. Through microscope-based learning, students can visualize structures such as the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, and chloroplasts, making abstract concepts more concrete and understandable. Research has shown that microscopy-based instruction enhances students’ observation skills, conceptual understanding, and ability to relate theory to real-life biological phenomena .

As a result, Biology is frequently taught in a theoretical manner, which reduces students’ exposure to real scientific investigation.
In areas such as Banana Island, Lagos State, where educational facilities are relatively better, it is still important to examine whether microscopic practical activities are effectively utilized and how they influence students’ understanding of cell structure and function. This study therefore seeks to investigate the effect of microscopic practical activities on students’ understanding of Biology concepts in secondary schools in Banana Island, Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of Biology as a core science subject, many students in secondary schools continue to perform poorly in topics related to cell structure and function. These concepts are often perceived as difficult due to their abstract nature and the inability of students to visualize microscopic structures without practical exposure.
One major factor contributing to this problem is the inadequate use of microscopes and laboratory practical activities in teaching Biology. In many cases, lessons on cell structure and function are delivered through lecture methods without sufficient hands-on activities. This limits students’ ability to observe cells directly and understand how different organelles function within living organisms.
Although microscopes are essential tools for learning cell biology, their use is often irregular or limited in many schools due to factors such as time constraints, lack of proper laboratory organization, or insufficient emphasis on practical work. When students are not actively engaged in microscopic observation, learning becomes abstract and memorization-based, rather than meaningful and experiential.
Research has shown that when students are exposed to practical microscope-based learning, they are more likely to understand biological structures, retain knowledge longer, and perform better academically. However, in the absence of such experiences, students struggle to relate theoretical explanations to real biological specimens.
In secondary schools in Banana Island, Lagos State, there is a need to determine whether microscopic practical activities are effectively used and whether they have any significant impact on students’ understanding of cell structure and function. This study therefore addresses the gap by investigating the relationship between microscope-based practical activities and students’ comprehension of cell biology concepts.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of microscopic practical activities on students’ understanding of cell structure and function in secondary schools in Banana Island, Lagos State.
Specifically, the study aims to:
- Determine the extent to which microscopic practical activities improve students’ understanding of cell structure and function.
- Examine the relationship between microscope usage and students’ academic performance in cell biology.
- Identify challenges affecting the effective use of microscopes in Biology teaching.
1.4 Research Question
The study is guided by the following research question:
- What is the effect of microscopic practical activities on students’ understanding of cell structure and function in secondary schools in Banana Island, Lagos State?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between microscopic practical activities and students’ understanding of cell structure and function in secondary schools in Banana Island, Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to Biology teachers, students, school administrators, curriculum planners, and educational policymakers. Biology teachers will gain insight into the importance of integrating microscopic practical activities into their teaching. Students will benefit by developing a better understanding of cell structure and function through hands-on learning. School administrators and policymakers will also be guided on the need to provide adequate laboratory facilities and support practical-based instruction in Biology.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the effect of microscopic practical activities on students’ understanding of cell structure and function. It is limited to selected secondary schools in Banana Island, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study covers Senior Secondary School students offering Biology.
1.8 Definition of Terms
For the purpose of this study, the following terms are defined as they are used within the context of the research:
Biology:
Biology is a branch of science that deals with the study of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, reproduction, and interactions with their environment.
Cell Structure:
Cell structure refers to the arrangement and organization of parts (organelles) within a cell such as the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, and chloroplast, which perform specific functions.
Cell Function:
Cell function refers to the various activities carried out by cell organelles that enable the cell to survive, grow, and carry out life processes such as respiration, nutrition, and reproduction.
Microscopic Practical Activities:
These are hands-on Biology learning activities in which students use microscopes to observe and study cells, tissues, and microorganisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Microscope:
A microscope is a scientific instrument used to magnify small objects such as cells and microorganisms, making them visible for study and observation.
Students’ Understanding:
This refers to the ability of students to comprehend, interpret, and explain Biology concepts, especially cell structure and function, as well as apply the knowledge in academic tasks.
Academic Performance:
This is the level of achievement of students in Biology as measured through tests, assignments, and examinations.
Secondary Schools:
These are post-primary educational institutions attended by students typically between the ages of 11 and 18, where subjects such as Biology are taught.
Banana Island:
