INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change has become one of the most pressing global environmental challenges of the 21st century, affecting ecosystems, economies, and human livelihoods. It is primarily driven by human activities such as deforestation, industrial emissions, and improper waste management practices that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Among these contributing factors, waste disposal practices play a significant role, particularly in urban areas where population growth and consumption patterns generate large volumes of solid waste. Poor waste management, including open dumping and uncontrolled burning, contributes to environmental pollution and accelerates climate change impacts such as flooding, heat waves, and air quality degradation.

In recent years, climate change awareness has gained attention as a critical tool for promoting environmentally responsible behavior. Climate change awareness refers to the level of understanding individuals have regarding the causes, effects, and mitigation strategies of climate change. It also includes knowledge of how daily human activities, such as waste disposal, influence environmental sustainability. When individuals are aware of climate change implications, they are more likely to adopt environmentally friendly practices, including proper waste segregation, recycling, and responsible disposal methods.

In urban centres such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, rapid urbanization has led to increased waste generation due to population growth, economic activities, and changing consumption patterns. The management of household waste in Abuja has become a major environmental concern, with issues such as indiscriminate dumping, blocked drainage systems, and burning of waste contributing to environmental degradation. These practices not only affect public health but also exacerbate climate-related risks such as flooding and air pollution.

Households play a crucial role in waste generation and disposal. Studies have shown that household behavior significantly influences the effectiveness of waste management systems in urban areas. Inadequate awareness of climate change issues often results in improper waste disposal practices. Conversely, households that are well-informed about environmental sustainability are more likely to engage in responsible waste management behaviors such as recycling, composting, and proper segregation of waste.

The Nigerian government, along with environmental agencies such as the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, has implemented various policies and awareness campaigns aimed at improving waste management practices. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives largely depends on the level of public awareness and behavioral change among residents. Despite these efforts, improper waste disposal remains prevalent in many parts of Abuja, indicating a gap between awareness and practice.

Furthermore, global studies have emphasized the importance of environmental education in shaping sustainable behaviors. According to environmental behavior theories, individuals are more likely to adopt sustainable practices when they understand the environmental consequences of their actions. Therefore, climate change awareness is expected to play a significant role in influencing household waste disposal practices.

This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of climate change awareness on waste disposal practices among households in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, with the aim of understanding how awareness influences environmental behavior and identifying areas for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing global and national awareness of climate change, improper waste disposal practices remain a major environmental challenge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Many households continue to engage in indiscriminate dumping of waste, open burning, and improper segregation of solid waste, which contribute to environmental pollution and climate change effects.

One of the major problems is the gap between awareness and actual behavioral practice. Although many residents may have some level of awareness about climate change, this knowledge does not always translate into responsible waste disposal behavior. This disconnect raises concerns about the effectiveness of existing environmental awareness campaigns.

Another significant issue is the lack of adequate environmental education and sensitization programs targeted at households. Many residents are not fully informed about the direct relationship between waste disposal practices and climate change. As a result, environmentally harmful behaviors continue to persist.

Infrastructural challenges also contribute to poor waste disposal practices. In some areas of Abuja, inadequate waste collection services, limited access to waste bins, and irregular waste evacuation by authorities encourage residents to dispose of waste improperly. This situation worsens environmental conditions and increases climate vulnerability.

Furthermore, socio-economic factors such as income level, education, and occupation influence waste disposal behavior. Households with lower levels of education may be less aware of proper waste management practices and their environmental consequences. This makes it difficult to achieve uniform compliance with sustainable waste practices.

Additionally, weak enforcement of environmental regulations contributes to the persistence of poor waste disposal practices. Although laws exist to regulate waste management, enforcement is often inconsistent, allowing individuals to engage in environmentally harmful behaviors without consequences.

Despite various studies on environmental awareness and waste management, there is limited empirical evidence specifically focusing on the relationship between climate change awareness and household waste disposal practices in FCT Abuja. This lack of localized research creates a gap in understanding the behavioral dynamics influencing waste management in the area.

Therefore, this study seeks to address this gap by investigating the effect of climate change awareness on waste disposal practices among households in FCT Abuja, with a view to providing recommendations for improving environmental sustainability.

1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of climate change awareness on waste disposal practices among households in FCT Abuja.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the level of climate change awareness among households in FCT Abuja.
2. Examine the waste disposal practices adopted by households.
3. Determine the relationship between climate change awareness and waste disposal practices.
4. Identify factors influencing household waste disposal behavior.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the level of climate change awareness among households in FCT Abuja?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between climate change awareness and waste disposal practices among households in FCT Abuja.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between climate change awareness and waste disposal practices among households in FCT Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several ways. First, it contributes to academic literature by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between climate change awareness and waste disposal practices in an urban Nigerian context. Second, it will assist policymakers and environmental agencies in designing effective awareness campaigns and waste management policies. Third, it will help households better understand the environmental impact of their waste disposal practices and encourage behavioral change. Lastly, the study will serve as a reference for future researchers interested in environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation strategies.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on households in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. It examines the level of climate change awareness and its influence on waste disposal practices such as recycling, waste segregation, burning, and dumping behaviors.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Climate Change Awareness: The level of understanding individuals have about the causes, effects, and solutions to climate change.
• Waste Disposal Practices: Methods used by households to manage and dispose of solid waste.
• Households: Groups of individuals living together and sharing living arrangements.
• Environmental Sustainability: The responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources.
