INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is universally recognized as an important instrument for personal development, social transformation, and nation-building. Beyond the transmission of academic knowledge and vocational skills, education is also expected to promote moral values, discipline, responsible behavior, and positive character among learners. In every society, schools are regarded not only as centers of intellectual training but also as institutions for molding the character and attitudes of young people. Consequently, the issue of character formation has become an important concern for educators, parents, religious organizations, and governments due to the increasing rate of moral decline among youths in contemporary society.

Character formation refers to the process of developing moral virtues, ethical behavior, discipline, integrity, responsibility, respect, honesty, self-control, and other positive values in individuals. It involves shaping students’ attitudes and conduct in ways that conform to acceptable moral and societal standards. According to Lickona (1991), character formation is the deliberate effort to cultivate virtues that enable individuals to act morally and responsibly in society. Character formation is essential because it influences the behavior, relationships, and decision-making abilities of individuals throughout life.

The Catholic Church has historically played a major role in the educational development of Nigeria through the establishment of schools aimed at promoting both academic excellence and moral discipline. Catholic education is rooted in Christian principles and emphasizes the holistic development of learners through intellectual, spiritual, moral, emotional, and social formation. Catholic schools are designed not only to impart academic knowledge but also to nurture students into responsible individuals who reflect Christian values in their daily lives. According to the Congregation for Catholic Education (1977), Catholic education seeks to integrate faith, culture, and life in order to produce morally upright and spiritually mature individuals.

Catholic education places strong emphasis on virtues such as honesty, humility, obedience, respect for authority, compassion, diligence, self-discipline, and love for others. Through religious instruction, moral teachings, prayer activities, discipline policies, and participation in church programs, Catholic schools attempt to shape students’ character and encourage them to live according to Christian principles. Catholic educators believe that education without moral and spiritual formation is incomplete because true education involves the total development of the human person.

In Nigeria, Catholic schools are widely respected for their commitment to discipline, academic excellence, and moral instruction. Many parents enroll their children in Catholic schools because they believe such schools provide better moral upbringing and stricter discipline compared to some public schools. However, despite the moral and religious emphasis in Catholic education, cases of indiscipline and moral misconduct among secondary school students continue to increase. Behaviors such as examination malpractice, cultism, bullying, disrespect for authority, violence, truancy, substance abuse, internet fraud, and sexual immorality have become major concerns in many schools. This situation raises questions regarding the effectiveness of Catholic education in promoting character formation among students.

The challenge of character formation among youths has become more serious in urban communities such as Lagos, where students are exposed to various social influences including peer pressure, media content, internet addiction, materialism, and moral decadence. Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area is one of the densely populated areas in Lagos State with diverse social and economic conditions. Many youths in the area face challenges associated with poverty, family instability, unemployment, crime, and negative peer influence, all of which may affect their moral behavior and character development. In such an environment, Catholic schools are expected to play a significant role in guiding students toward positive character and responsible living.

Secondary school education represents a critical stage in the life of adolescents because it is during this period that students develop values, attitudes, habits, and behaviors that may shape their future lives. Adolescents are highly vulnerable to external influences and may easily adopt negative behaviors if not properly guided. Catholic education therefore aims to provide moral and spiritual support that helps students develop strong character and resist harmful societal influences. Activities such as Christian Religious Education, morning devotions, moral instruction, counseling, retreats, discipline policies, and participation in church activities are intended to strengthen character formation among students.

Furthermore, teachers in Catholic schools are expected to serve not only as academic instructors but also as role models and moral mentors. Their attitudes, behavior, teaching methods, and relationship with students contribute significantly to character development. Parents also play an important role in reinforcing the values taught in Catholic schools through proper upbringing, discipline, and moral guidance at home. Effective collaboration between schools, parents, and the Church is therefore necessary for successful character formation among students.

Despite these efforts, there is growing concern among educators, parents, and religious leaders regarding the moral condition of many secondary school students. Some students who attend Catholic schools still engage in immoral and antisocial behaviors that contradict the values promoted by Catholic education. This situation suggests that there may be challenges affecting the effectiveness of Catholic education in achieving its objectives of character formation. Factors such as poor parental supervision, inadequate moral instruction, societal influence, media exposure, and weak enforcement of discipline may hinder the process of character development among students.

Scholars have emphasized the importance of religious and moral education in character formation. Berkowitz and Bier (2005) argued that schools play a significant role in developing moral character through values-based education and positive school culture. Similarly, Ofojebe (2020) observed that students exposed to religious and moral instruction are more likely to demonstrate responsible behavior and positive social attitudes. However, limited studies have specifically examined the influence of Catholic education on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of Catholic education on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State. The study intends to determine whether Catholic education contributes significantly to the moral behavior, discipline, and value orientation of students. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to educational development, moral instruction strategies, and faith-based educational policies in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

One of the major objectives of Catholic education is the formation of morally upright and responsible individuals who can contribute positively to society. Catholic schools are expected to instill virtues such as honesty, discipline, obedience, integrity, respect, and love through religious instruction, moral teachings, discipline policies, and spiritual activities. Parents often prefer Catholic schools because of their reputation for discipline and character formation.

Despite the emphasis placed on moral and spiritual development in Catholic schools, there appears to be increasing moral decline and indiscipline among many secondary school students. Cases of examination malpractice, bullying, cultism, disrespect for authority, fighting, truancy, internet fraud, substance abuse, stealing, and sexual misconduct have become common among some students, including those attending Catholic schools. This situation raises concerns regarding the extent to which Catholic education influences character formation among students.

In Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State, many students are exposed to negative societal influences such as peer pressure, social media addiction, poverty, broken homes, violence, and immoral practices within the community. These challenges may weaken the effectiveness of Catholic education in shaping students’ character and moral behavior. Consequently, some students may acquire academic knowledge without developing the moral virtues and discipline expected from Catholic educational institutions.

Another problem is that some teachers and parents may not adequately support character formation efforts. Some teachers may focus more on academic performance than moral instruction, while some parents may fail to reinforce discipline and moral values at home. Inadequate counseling services, weak disciplinary measures, and declining interest in religious activities may also reduce the effectiveness of Catholic education in promoting character formation among students.

Although previous studies have examined moral education and student discipline, few studies have specifically investigated the influence of Catholic education on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State. This creates a gap in knowledge that this study seeks to fill. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether Catholic education significantly influences character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Catholic education on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the influence of Catholic education on students’ moral behavior.
2. Determine the effect of Catholic education on discipline among secondary school students.
3. Assess the relationship between religious instruction and character formation among students.
4. Identify factors affecting character formation among secondary school students in Catholic schools.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What influence does Catholic education have on students’ moral behavior?
2. How does Catholic education affect discipline among secondary school students?
3. What relationship exists between religious instruction and character formation among students?
4. What factors affect character formation among secondary school students in Catholic schools?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested in the study:

H₀: Catholic education has no significant influence on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State.

H₁: Catholic education has a significant influence on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to school administrators, teachers, parents, students, church leaders, policymakers, and researchers.

The study will help Catholic school administrators understand the importance of strengthening moral and spiritual programs aimed at promoting character formation among students.

Teachers will benefit from the study by gaining insight into effective strategies for integrating moral instruction and character education into classroom activities.

Parents will benefit from the findings as the study will highlight the importance of supporting schools in the moral upbringing and discipline of their children.

Students will benefit from the study as it will create awareness of the importance of good character, discipline, honesty, and responsible behavior in society.

Church leaders and policymakers will benefit from the findings in developing educational and spiritual programs that promote moral values and positive character among youths.

Researchers and scholars in education and religious studies will benefit from the study as it will contribute to existing literature on Catholic education and character formation in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the influence of Catholic education on character formation among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study will specifically examine the influence of Catholic education on moral behavior, discipline, religious instruction, and factors affecting character formation among students.

The study will be limited to selected Catholic secondary schools in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Catholic Education: A system of education based on Catholic doctrines, values, and principles aimed at promoting academic excellence and moral development.

Character Formation: The process of developing moral virtues, discipline, integrity, honesty, and responsible behavior in individuals.

Moral Behavior: Conduct that reflects acceptable ethical and Christian values such as honesty, respect, discipline, and responsibility.

Discipline: The ability to obey rules, control behavior, and act responsibly in accordance with societal and moral standards.

Secondary School Students: Learners enrolled in junior and senior secondary schools.
