Project – Effect of Digital Public Relations on Corporate Image and Customer Loyalty in Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In recent years, the rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed the practice of public relations across the globe. Organizations are increasingly shifting from traditional communication methods to digital platforms such as social media, websites, blogs, email newsletters, and online news portals. This transformation has given rise to Digital Public Relations (Digital PR), which refers to the strategic use of online channels to manage communication between organizations and their stakeholders, build reputation, and influence public perception (Breakenridge, 2012).
Digital public relations allows organizations to interact with their publics in real time, creating opportunities for engagement, feedback, and relationship building. Unlike traditional PR, which is often one-directional, digital PR is interactive and participatory. It enables organizations to respond quickly to public concerns, manage crises effectively, and maintain a consistent corporate image across multiple online platforms (Phillips & Young, 2009).
Corporate image refers to the overall perception that stakeholders have about an organization based on its communication, behaviour, products, and social responsibility. A positive corporate image enhances customer trust, strengthens brand reputation, and increases competitive advantage. In contrast, a negative image can lead to loss of customers and reduced profitability. According to Gray and Balmer (1998), corporate image is a strategic asset that must be carefully managed through consistent communication and stakeholder engagement.
Customer loyalty, on the other hand, refers to a customer’s commitment to consistently repurchase or continue using a brand over time despite competitive pressures. Loyal customers are valuable to organizations because they contribute to sustained revenue, reduced marketing costs, and positive word-of-mouth promotion. Schiffman and Kanuk (2010) explain that customer loyalty is influenced by satisfaction, trust, perceived value, and emotional connection with a brand.
In the Nigerian manufacturing sector, competition has intensified due to globalization, increased product availability, and changing consumer preferences. Organizations are therefore under pressure to maintain strong corporate images and build lasting customer relationships. Manufacturing firms are increasingly adopting digital PR strategies to enhance visibility, improve stakeholder engagement, and strengthen brand reputation.
Organizations such as Nigerian Breweries Plc and other manufacturing firms in Nigeria utilize digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, and corporate websites to communicate with customers and manage public perception. These platforms are used to share product information, respond to customer complaints, and promote corporate social responsibility activities.
Digital PR has become particularly important because consumers now rely heavily on online information when making purchasing decisions. Reviews, social media comments, influencer opinions, and online brand interactions significantly shape consumer perception. As a result, organizations must ensure that their digital communication is consistent, transparent, and engaging in order to maintain a strong corporate image.
Furthermore, the rise of social media has empowered consumers to actively participate in brand communication. Consumers can now share experiences, express dissatisfaction, and influence other potential customers through online platforms. This has made corporate image more dynamic and more vulnerable to public opinion than ever before.
Despite the increasing adoption of digital PR in Nigeria, many manufacturing firms still struggle with ineffective online communication strategies, poor engagement with stakeholders, and inconsistent brand messaging. These challenges raise concerns about the actual effectiveness of digital public relations in shaping corporate image and customer loyalty.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the effect of Digital Public Relations on corporate image and customer loyalty in manufacturing firms in Nigeria, using relevant industry evidence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In the modern business environment, corporate image and customer loyalty have become critical determinants of organizational success. Manufacturing firms in Nigeria face intense competition, making it necessary to adopt effective communication strategies that can enhance brand perception and retain customers. Digital Public Relations has emerged as a powerful tool for achieving these objectives. However, its effectiveness in Nigerian manufacturing firms remains a subject of concern.
One major problem is the inconsistency in digital communication across various platforms. Some manufacturing firms post different messages on different social media channels, which creates confusion among customers and weakens brand identity. This inconsistency affects how the public perceives the organization and reduces trust in the brand.
Another challenge is the lack of effective engagement between organizations and their stakeholders. Many manufacturing firms use digital platforms mainly for one-way communication, without actively responding to customer feedback or complaints. This reduces the effectiveness of digital PR in building relationships and enhancing customer loyalty.
In addition, negative online publicity and misinformation can spread rapidly through digital platforms, damaging corporate image within a short period. Some organizations lack proper crisis management strategies to address such issues promptly, leading to reputational damage and loss of customer confidence.
In the case of manufacturing firms in Nigeria, including organizations such as Nigerian Breweries Plc, there is growing reliance on digital platforms for communication. However, there is limited empirical evidence on how these digital PR practices influence corporate image and customer loyalty in the Nigerian context.
Furthermore, the effectiveness of digital PR in converting online engagement into long-term customer loyalty remains unclear. While firms invest heavily in online campaigns, social media advertising, and digital storytelling, it is uncertain whether these efforts significantly enhance customer loyalty and corporate reputation.
Therefore, there is a need to critically examine whether digital public relations truly has a significant effect on corporate image and customer loyalty in Nigerian manufacturing firms.
