INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The doctrine of sanctification occupies a central place in Christian theology, particularly within Pauline writings. Sanctification refers to the process by which a believer is set apart for God and progressively transformed into the likeness of Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit. Across Christian traditions, it is understood both as a definitive act of God at conversion and an ongoing moral and spiritual transformation in the believer’s life (Grudem, 1994; Erickson, 2013). Despite this shared understanding, significant theological debates persist regarding its nature, timing, and human participation.

In contemporary Christianity, especially within evangelical and Pentecostal movements, sanctification is often interpreted through experiential and practical lenses, emphasizing holiness, spiritual discipline, and moral purity. However, there remains tension between “positional sanctification” (what God has already done in Christ) and “progressive sanctification” (what believers continue to experience daily). This tension has led to divergent teachings and practices in various Christian communities, sometimes resulting in legalism on one hand and moral laxity on the other.

The Epistle to the Romans, particularly Romans 8:1–17, provides one of the most comprehensive theological expositions on the life of the Spirit and the believer’s freedom from condemnation. Paul presents a sharp contrast between life in the flesh and life in the Spirit, emphasizing that those who are in Christ Jesus are no longer under condemnation but are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live righteously. The passage further highlights adoption into God’s family, assurance of salvation, and the transformative role of the Spirit in enabling believers to overcome sinful nature (Moo, 2018; Schreiner, 2018).

However, modern interpretations of sanctification often fail to engage deeply with the exegetical richness of Romans 8:1–17, leading to fragmented theological applications. Some traditions overemphasize human effort while others overemphasize divine sovereignty to the neglect of human responsibility. Therefore, a careful exegetical study of Romans 8:1–17 is necessary to clarify Paul’s intended meaning and to evaluate its theological implications for contemporary doctrines of sanctification.

This study seeks to bridge the gap between biblical exegesis and systematic theology by examining how Romans 8:1–17 informs the doctrine of sanctification and its practical expression in contemporary Christianity.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the centrality of sanctification in Christian doctrine, there exists considerable confusion and inconsistency in its interpretation and application in contemporary Christian practice. Many believers struggle with understanding whether sanctification is an instantaneous experience at conversion, a lifelong process, or a combination of both. This confusion has led to varying theological positions that sometimes contradict one another within the same Christian tradition.

In many churches today, sanctification is either reduced to outward moral conduct or elevated to an unattainable spiritual perfection, resulting in frustration among believers who feel unable to meet perceived spiritual standards. Conversely, some groups emphasize grace in a way that downplays the necessity of moral transformation, leading to ethical compromise. These extremes reveal a lack of balanced theological understanding rooted in sound biblical exegesis.

Romans 8:1–17 is a foundational text for understanding sanctification, yet its depth is often underexplored or selectively interpreted. Many teachings draw isolated verses without considering the broader argument of Paul concerning life in the Spirit, adoption, and freedom from sin’s dominion. This selective interpretation contributes to doctrinal imbalance and inconsistent Christian living.

Furthermore, there is limited scholarly work that integrates detailed exegetical analysis of Romans 8:1–17 with its systematic theological implications for sanctification in the context of contemporary Christianity, particularly within African and Nigerian church settings. This gap necessitates a rigorous study that will provide clarity and theological coherence.

Therefore, the problem this study addresses is the inadequate and sometimes distorted understanding of sanctification in contemporary Christianity due to insufficient exegetical engagement with Romans 8:1–17.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to conduct an exegetical analysis of Romans 8:1–17 and examine its theological implications for the doctrine of sanctification in contemporary Christianity.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the historical and literary context of Romans 8:1–17.
2. Provide a detailed exegetical analysis of key themes in Romans 8:1–17.

1.6 Significance of the Study

Second, it offers theological clarity on the doctrine of sanctification, helping to resolve existing doctrinal tensions in Christian teaching and practice.

By grounding sanctification in sound exegesis, it helps prevent extremes of legalism and antinomianism. 1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to an exegetical examination of Romans 8:1–17 and its theological implications for sanctification. It focuses on Pauline theology within the New Testament context and its application to contemporary Christian doctrine. The study does not extend to other Pauline epistles in detail, except where necessary for supporting interpretation.
