CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The church plays a vital role in the spiritual, moral, emotional, and social development of individuals in society. One of the major responsibilities of the church is to nurture believers spiritually and guide them toward Christian maturity. Spiritual growth is an essential aspect of the Christian faith because it enables believers to develop a closer relationship with God, live according to biblical principles, and demonstrate Christ-like character in their daily lives (Collins, 2007). However, many church members face various spiritual, emotional, and personal challenges that hinder their spiritual development. As a result, pastoral counselling has become increasingly important in helping believers overcome challenges and grow spiritually.

Pastoral counselling refers to the process through which pastors provide spiritual guidance, emotional support, biblical instruction, and counselling services to church members. It involves the use of biblical teachings, prayer, encouragement, and counselling techniques to help individuals deal with personal, spiritual, marital, emotional, and social problems (Clinebell, 1984). Pastoral counselling seeks to promote healing, restoration, spiritual maturity, and godly living among church members.

Spiritual growth can be described as the continuous process of developing spiritually through prayer, Bible study, obedience to God’s Word, fellowship, faith, and Christian service. It involves growing in knowledge of God, developing Christian virtues, and becoming spiritually mature. A spiritually growing Christian demonstrates love, patience, humility, self-control, forgiveness, faithfulness, and commitment to God (McMinn, 2011). Spiritual growth also strengthens believers against temptation, discouragement, and worldly influences.

In recent years, many churches have experienced challenges relating to declining spiritual commitment among members. Some church members struggle with weak faith, lack of biblical knowledge, moral failures, emotional instability, marital problems, financial difficulties, peer pressure, and worldly distractions. These issues often affect their relationship with God and reduce their participation in church activities (Nwankwo, 2019). In some cases, church members become discouraged, backslide, or abandon the faith due to unresolved personal and spiritual problems.

Pastoral counselling has therefore become an important ministry within the church for addressing the needs of believers. Through counselling sessions, pastors guide church members using biblical principles and spiritual wisdom. Counselling helps believers understand God’s purpose for their lives, overcome sinful habits, strengthen their faith, and maintain healthy relationships with others (Crabb, 2013). Pastoral counselling also provides emotional support and encouragement to individuals experiencing grief, depression, disappointment, addiction, family conflicts, or spiritual crises.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of spiritual guidance and counselling in the life of believers. Proverbs 11:14 states that “where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Similarly, Galatians 6:1–2 encourages believers to restore those who are spiritually weak with gentleness and love. Jesus Christ Himself demonstrated pastoral counselling through His teachings, encouragement, correction, and compassion toward His followers. The apostles also provided spiritual guidance and counselling to early Christians to strengthen their faith and spiritual growth (The Holy Bible, 2011).

In many churches today, pastors provide counselling services through preaching, teaching, visitation, mentorship, prayer meetings, seminars, and personal counselling sessions. These activities help church members understand biblical truths, solve personal problems, and develop spiritually. Effective pastoral counselling can improve church attendance, strengthen commitment to Christian values, promote unity within the church, and encourage members to participate actively in church programs and evangelism (Akinade, 2016).

Ikorodu, a rapidly developing area in Lagos State, has many churches of different denominations that serve the spiritual needs of residents. Despite the presence of churches and religious activities in Ikorodu, many church members still experience spiritual challenges such as weak commitment to prayer, poor Bible study habits, moral compromise, lack of spiritual discipline, and emotional struggles. Some believers attend church regularly but show little evidence of spiritual growth in their attitudes and lifestyles.

Furthermore, many pastors face challenges in providing effective counselling due to large congregations, inadequate counselling training, limited time, and insufficient counselling facilities (Corey, 2017). Some church members are also unwilling to seek counselling because of fear, pride, stigma, or lack of trust. Consequently, unresolved spiritual and emotional problems continue to affect the spiritual lives of many believers.

Although pastoral counselling is recognized as an important ministry in the church, there is still limited research on its role in promoting spiritual growth among church members, especially in selected churches in Ikorodu. There is therefore a need to examine how pastoral counselling contributes to the spiritual development of church members and the challenges affecting its effectiveness.

It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the role of pastoral counselling in the spiritual growth of church members in selected churches in Ikorodu.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Spiritual growth is essential for every Christian because it helps believers develop strong faith, godly character, and a closer relationship with God (Collins, 2007). However, many church members today experience spiritual weakness, lack of commitment to Christian values, poor prayer life, inadequate knowledge of the Bible, and low participation in church activities. These problems have negatively affected the spiritual development of many believers and weakened their relationship with God.

In many churches, members struggle with various personal, emotional, social, and spiritual challenges such as marital conflicts, financial difficulties, peer pressure, addiction, depression, discouragement, and moral temptation. These problems often hinder spiritual growth and lead to backsliding, loss of faith, and poor Christian conduct (McMinn, 2011). Some church members also find it difficult to apply biblical teachings to their daily lives due to lack of guidance and counselling.

Although pastors are expected to provide spiritual guidance and counselling to church members, many churches face challenges in offering effective pastoral counselling services. Some pastors lack professional counselling training and may not possess adequate counselling skills to handle complex emotional and spiritual problems (Clinebell, 1984). In addition, large church populations, busy schedules, and limited counselling facilities reduce the ability of pastors to give personal attention to members.

Another major problem is that some church members do not seek pastoral counselling even when facing serious challenges. Some individuals fear criticism, embarrassment, or lack confidence in confidentiality during counselling sessions. Consequently, many spiritual and emotional problems remain unresolved, thereby affecting the spiritual growth and stability of church members.

Despite the importance of pastoral counselling in church ministry, there is insufficient empirical evidence on how pastoral counselling contributes to the spiritual growth of church members in selected churches in Ikorodu. It is therefore necessary to investigate the role pastoral counselling plays in strengthening the spiritual lives of church members and identify the challenges affecting its effectiveness in churches.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of pastoral counselling in the spiritual growth of church members in selected churches in Ikorodu.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the factors affecting spiritual growth among church members.
2. Determine the role of pastoral counselling in promoting spiritual growth.
3. Identify counselling methods used by pastors in churches.
4. Examine the effectiveness of pastoral counselling in strengthening the faith of church members.
5. Identify challenges affecting pastoral counselling in selected churches in Ikorodu.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What factors affect the spiritual growth of church members?
2. What role does pastoral counselling play in promoting spiritual growth?
3. What counselling methods are used by pastors in churches?
4. How effective is pastoral counselling in strengthening the faith of church members?
5. What challenges affect pastoral counselling in selected churches in Ikorodu?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis will be tested in the study:

H₀: Pastoral counselling has no significant role in the spiritual growth of church members.

H₁: Pastoral counselling has a significant role in the spiritual growth of church members.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to pastors, church members, counsellors, church leaders, researchers, and society at large.

The study will help pastors understand the importance of effective counselling in promoting the spiritual growth of church members. It will also encourage pastors to improve their counselling skills and establish effective counselling ministries within churches.

Church members will benefit from the study by understanding the importance of seeking pastoral counselling when facing spiritual, emotional, or personal challenges. The study will encourage believers to participate actively in spiritual growth activities such as prayer, Bible study, and fellowship.

Church leaders and denominations will benefit from the study as it will provide useful information for developing counselling programs and training pastors in counselling techniques.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to academic knowledge in the field of pastoral counselling and Christian education. It will serve as reference material for students and future researchers conducting studies related to church growth, counselling, and spiritual development.

Finally, the study will contribute to moral and spiritual development in society by encouraging healthy Christian living, reducing moral decadence, and promoting peaceful relationships within churches and communities.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of pastoral counselling in the spiritual growth of church members in selected churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The study specifically examines the factors affecting spiritual growth, the role of pastoral counselling, counselling methods used by pastors, the effectiveness of counselling, and the challenges affecting pastoral counselling in churches.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Pastoral Counselling: A counselling process in which pastors provide spiritual guidance, emotional support, and biblical solutions to personal and spiritual problems.

Spiritual Growth: The continuous development of a believer in faith, knowledge of God, Christian character, and obedience to biblical teachings.

Church Members: Individuals who belong to and worship in a particular Christian church.

Counselling: A helping relationship in which guidance and support are provided to individuals facing personal, emotional, or spiritual challenges.

Faith: Trust, confidence, and belief in God and His teachings.

Biblical Principles: Teachings and values derived from the Bible used to guide Christian living and behaviour.
