INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Anxiety and fear are common emotional challenges experienced by many students, especially those in senior secondary schools. Anxiety refers to a feeling of worry, nervousness, tension, or uneasiness about an uncertain situation, while fear is an emotional response to a perceived threat or danger (Corey, 2017). Among secondary school students, anxiety and fear may arise from academic pressure, examination stress, peer influence, parental expectations, family problems, low self-esteem, uncertainty about the future, and social challenges.

SS3 students are particularly vulnerable to anxiety and fear because they are preparing for important external examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), and other school-leaving examinations. These examinations often determine students’ future educational and career opportunities. As a result, many SS3 students experience emotional tension, depression, panic, low confidence, and psychological stress (Akinade, 2016).

In recent years, anxiety and fear among secondary school students have become major concerns for parents, teachers, counsellors, religious leaders, and society at large. Some students develop poor study habits, lose concentration in class, avoid social interactions, or engage in negative behaviors such as drug abuse, examination malpractice, truancy, and depression because of unresolved emotional struggles (Oladele, 2015). In severe cases, anxiety and fear may affect students’ academic performance, mental health, spiritual life, and overall well-being.

Counselling is one of the major methods used to help students overcome emotional and psychological challenges. Counselling provides emotional support, guidance, encouragement, and practical solutions to individuals experiencing difficulties in life (Akinade, 2016). School counsellors, teachers, parents, and religious leaders often assist students in managing fear, stress, anxiety, and emotional instability through counselling services.

Christian counselling, also known as biblical counselling, is a type of counselling that combines professional counselling techniques with biblical teachings and spiritual guidance to help individuals overcome emotional, social, moral, and spiritual problems (Crabb, 2013). Christian counselling is based on the belief that God’s Word provides comfort, hope, wisdom, peace, and direction for dealing with life challenges. It emphasizes prayer, faith in God, scriptural encouragement, repentance, positive thinking, and trust in God as important tools for overcoming anxiety and fear.

The Bible contains several teachings that encourage believers not to fear or be anxious. Philippians 4:6 instructs believers to be anxious for nothing but to present their requests to God through prayer and thanksgiving. Similarly, Isaiah 41:10 assures believers that God is with them and will strengthen and uphold them. These biblical teachings serve as sources of encouragement and emotional healing for students facing fear and anxiety.

Christian counselling plays an important role in helping SS3 students develop confidence, emotional stability, spiritual growth, and positive attitudes toward academic and personal challenges (Harper, 2018). Through prayer sessions, scriptural counselling, spiritual mentoring, and moral guidance, Christian counselling seeks to help students overcome fear, manage stress, and develop faith in God during difficult periods.

However, despite the availability of counselling services in schools and churches, many SS3 students continue to experience anxiety and fear. Some students do not have access to effective counselling services, while others are influenced by peer pressure, social media, family problems, and societal expectations. In some schools, counselling services are inadequate due to lack of qualified counsellors, poor counselling facilities, and insufficient spiritual support (Oladele, 2015).

Furthermore, some parents and teachers focus mainly on academic success without paying adequate attention to the emotional and spiritual well-being of students. As a result, many students suffer silently from emotional stress, fear of failure, and anxiety. This situation has created the need to examine the role of Christian counselling in helping students overcome emotional challenges.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the role of Christian counselling in overcoming anxiety and fear among SS3 students in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study will also investigate the causes of anxiety and fear among students, the effectiveness of Christian counselling, and the challenges facing counselling services in schools.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Anxiety and fear have become common emotional problems affecting many SS3 students in secondary schools today. Many students experience fear of failure, examination anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional instability, uncertainty about the future, and pressure from parents and society (Corey, 2017). These emotional challenges often affect students’ academic performance, concentration, social relationships, and mental well-being.

Despite the presence of guidance counsellors and teachers in schools, many students continue to suffer from anxiety and fear without receiving adequate emotional and spiritual support. Some students experience emotional breakdowns, depression, poor academic performance, and negative behaviors because their emotional needs are not properly addressed (Oladele, 2015).

Another major problem is that some schools lack effective counselling programs and qualified counsellors who can combine professional counselling techniques with biblical principles in helping students overcome anxiety and fear. In some cases, counselling services focus mainly on academic guidance without addressing students’ emotional and spiritual struggles (Crabb, 2013).

Furthermore, peer pressure, family problems, poverty, social media influence, and fear of external examinations continue to increase emotional tension among students. Some parents place excessive expectations on students, thereby increasing their fear and anxiety. Many students also lack spiritual encouragement and moral support needed to cope with life challenges effectively.

Although Christian counselling is believed to provide emotional comfort, hope, peace, and encouragement through biblical teachings and spiritual guidance, there is limited research on its effectiveness among SS3 students in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Therefore, the major problem of this study is to examine the role of Christian counselling in overcoming anxiety and fear among SS3 students and to determine the effectiveness of biblical counselling strategies in addressing students’ emotional challenges.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of Christian counselling in overcoming anxiety and fear among SS3 students in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. identify the causes of anxiety and fear among SS3 students;
2. examine the role of Christian counselling in overcoming anxiety and fear among students;
3. determine the effectiveness of biblical counselling strategies in helping students manage emotional stress;
4. identify the challenges facing Christian counselling services in schools;
5. suggest possible ways of improving counselling services for students.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What are the causes of anxiety and fear among SS3 students?
2. What roles does Christian counselling play in overcoming anxiety and fear among students?
3. How effective is Christian counselling in helping students manage emotional stress?
4. What challenges affect Christian counselling services in schools?
5. What measures can improve counselling services for SS3 students?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Christian counselling is not significantly effective in overcoming anxiety and fear among SS3 students in Kosofe Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to students, teachers, counsellors, parents, churches, and future researchers.

The study will help students understand the importance of Christian counselling in overcoming fear, anxiety, and emotional stress. It will also encourage students to seek counselling support during difficult periods.

Teachers and school counsellors will benefit from the study by gaining better understanding of how biblical principles can be integrated into counselling programs to improve students’ emotional and spiritual well-being.

Parents will benefit from the findings by understanding the importance of emotional support, encouragement, and spiritual guidance in helping their children cope with academic pressure and life challenges.

Churches and Christian organizations will also benefit from this study by understanding their role in providing emotional and spiritual support for students through biblical counselling.

Finally, the study will contribute to academic knowledge in the fields of Christian counselling, educational psychology, and adolescent development.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of Christian counselling in overcoming anxiety and fear among SS3 students in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study will specifically examine the causes of anxiety and fear, the effectiveness of Christian counselling, the challenges facing counselling services, and possible solutions for improving counselling programs among students.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

During the course of this study, the researcher may encounter certain limitations such as inadequate finance, limited time, lack of cooperation from respondents, and difficulty in obtaining relevant materials. However, despite these challenges, efforts will be made to ensure the successful completion of the study.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Christian Counselling: A form of counselling that combines biblical teachings with professional counselling methods to help individuals solve emotional, spiritual, and personal problems.

Anxiety: A feeling of worry, nervousness, fear, or uneasiness about uncertain situations or future events.

Fear: An emotional response to perceived danger, threat, or failure.

SS3 Students: Students in Senior Secondary School Three preparing for external examinations and graduation.

Counselling: A process of giving guidance, emotional support, and advice to individuals facing personal or emotional problems.

Biblical Principles: Moral and spiritual teachings derived from the Bible for guiding human behavior and emotional well-being.
