INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is one of the oldest and most sacred institutions established by God for companionship, procreation, mutual support, and societal stability. In Christianity, marriage is regarded as a covenant relationship ordained by God and built on love, faithfulness, understanding, patience, and forgiveness. According to the Bible, marriage reflects the relationship between Christ and the Church, making it a spiritual union that requires commitment and sacrifice from both partners (Ephesians 5:25–33, New International Version, 2011). However, despite its sacred nature, many Christian marriages today face numerous challenges such as infidelity, financial difficulties, communication gaps, pride, anger, domestic violence, distrust, and unresolved conflicts, which often threaten marital stability and longevity.

One major factor identified as essential for sustaining long-lasting Christian marriages is forgiveness. Forgiveness involves letting go of resentment, bitterness, revenge, and anger toward one’s spouse after experiencing hurt or offense. It is the conscious decision to release negative emotions and reconcile with the offender. In Christian teachings, forgiveness is considered a divine command and a key virtue necessary for peaceful coexistence. Jesus Christ emphasized forgiveness in several biblical passages, teaching believers to forgive one another just as God forgives humanity (Matthew 6:14–15, New International Version, 2011). Therefore, forgiveness serves as a spiritual and emotional tool for maintaining harmony and unity in marriage.

The importance of forgiveness in marriage cannot be overemphasized because conflicts are inevitable in every marital relationship. No marriage is completely free from misunderstandings or disagreements. What often determines the success and longevity of a marriage is not the absence of conflict but the ability of couples to resolve issues peacefully and forgive one another genuinely. Couples who practice forgiveness tend to enjoy greater emotional intimacy, trust, peace, and marital satisfaction compared to those who hold grudges and unresolved bitterness (Worthington, 2005).

Research has shown that unforgiveness in marriage contributes significantly to emotional separation, hostility, stress, depression, and eventually divorce. Couples who refuse to forgive often experience recurring conflicts, communication breakdown, and emotional withdrawal. On the other hand, forgiveness encourages reconciliation, healing, mutual understanding, and stronger emotional bonds between spouses (Enright & Fitzgibbons, 2015). Forgiveness also promotes psychological well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and emotional pain within marital relationships.

In contemporary society, divorce and marital instability have become increasingly common, even among Christian couples. Many marriages that began with love and commitment eventually collapse due to unresolved conflicts and the inability to forgive past offenses. In Lagos State, where urbanization, economic pressures, and changing social values continue to influence family life, Christian marriages are also facing serious challenges. Cases of separation, domestic conflicts, infidelity, and emotional abuse are becoming more prevalent among church members. This situation has raised concerns among religious leaders, counselors, and marriage therapists regarding the sustainability of Christian homes.

Churches play a vital role in promoting healthy marriages through counseling, teachings, seminars, and spiritual guidance. Many churches emphasize forgiveness as a biblical principle necessary for successful marriages. Through sermons, marriage counseling sessions, and family programs, Christian couples are encouraged to practice patience, tolerance, reconciliation, and forgiveness in handling marital disagreements. Nevertheless, despite these teachings, some Christian couples still struggle with bitterness, unforgiveness, and persistent conflicts that negatively affect their marital longevity.

Forgiveness in marriage is not merely about saying “I forgive you” but involves emotional healing, restoration of trust, and the willingness to rebuild broken relationships. It requires humility, empathy, love, and spiritual maturity from both partners. In many cases, forgiveness helps couples overcome painful experiences such as betrayal, disappointment, neglect, or verbal abuse. Without forgiveness, resentment accumulates over time and weakens the marital bond.

Furthermore, scholars have argued that forgiveness strengthens marital commitment and contributes positively to marital longevity. Fincham, Hall, and Beach (2006) noted that forgiveness improves relationship quality by reducing negative emotions and increasing positive interactions between spouses. Similarly, McCullough (2008) observed that couples who forgive easily are more likely to remain together and sustain peaceful marital relationships.

The growing rate of marital instability among Christians has therefore made it necessary to examine the role forgiveness plays in sustaining long-lasting marriages. This study seeks to investigate the impact of forgiveness on the longevity of Christian marriages using selected churches in Lagos State as a case study. The study will provide insights into how forgiveness contributes to marital stability, conflict resolution, emotional healing, and peaceful coexistence among Christian couples.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marriage is expected to provide love, companionship, emotional support, and stability for couples. However, many Christian marriages today are experiencing serious challenges that threaten their existence and longevity. Despite the biblical teachings on love, patience, and forgiveness, many couples struggle to maintain peaceful and stable marital relationships due to unresolved conflicts and unforgiveness.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in cases of separation, divorce, domestic violence, emotional abuse, and marital dissatisfaction among Christian couples. Many marriages collapse because spouses find it difficult to forgive offenses such as infidelity, dishonesty, financial irresponsibility, neglect, disrespect, and communication failures. Instead of resolving conflicts peacefully, some couples harbor bitterness, anger, resentment, and revenge, which gradually destroy marital unity and intimacy (Worthington, 2005).

Unforgiveness has become a major problem in many Christian homes because offended spouses often refuse to let go of past hurts. This situation creates emotional distance, tension, hostility, and repeated conflicts within the marriage. In some cases, prolonged unforgiveness leads to depression, stress, loss of trust, and eventual marital breakdown (Enright & Fitzgibbons, 2015). Many couples continue living together physically but remain emotionally disconnected due to unresolved grievances.

Although churches in Lagos State organize marriage seminars, counseling programs, and teachings on forgiveness, many Christian couples still experience instability in their marriages. Some spouses lack proper understanding of the spiritual and emotional importance of forgiveness in sustaining long-term relationships. Others find it difficult to apply biblical teachings on forgiveness in practical marital situations, especially when deeply hurt by their partners.

Furthermore, the pressures of modern living such as economic hardship, work-related stress, social influence, and changing cultural values have intensified marital conflicts among couples in Lagos State. These pressures often increase misunderstandings and make forgiveness more difficult within marriages. As a result, many Christian homes experience instability despite regular church attendance and religious commitment.

Several studies have examined factors affecting marital stability, but limited attention has been given specifically to the impact of forgiveness on the longevity of Christian marriages within selected churches in Lagos State. This gap in knowledge makes it necessary to investigate how forgiveness influences marital stability, emotional healing, reconciliation, and long-lasting marital relationships among Christian couples.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the impact of forgiveness on the longevity of Christian marriages in selected churches in Lagos State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of forgiveness on the longevity of Christian marriages in selected churches in Lagos State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the role of forgiveness in sustaining Christian marriages;
2. determine the relationship between forgiveness and marital stability among Christian couples;
3. identify the causes of unforgiveness in Christian marriages;
4. examine the effects of unforgiveness on marital longevity; and

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What role does forgiveness play in sustaining Christian marriages?
2. Is there a relationship between forgiveness and marital stability among Christian couples?
3. What are the major causes of unforgiveness in Christian marriages?
4. What effects does unforgiveness have on the longevity of Christian marriages?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between forgiveness and the longevity of Christian marriages.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between forgiveness and the longevity of Christian marriages.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to Christian couples by helping them understand the importance of forgiveness in maintaining peaceful and long-lasting marriages. It will encourage spouses to embrace reconciliation, patience, and understanding in resolving marital conflicts.

The study will also benefit church leaders, pastors, and marriage counselors by providing useful information on how forgiveness can strengthen Christian homes. The findings will assist them in developing effective counseling strategies and marital teachings for church members.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to academic knowledge by serving as reference material for future researchers interested in marriage, family relationships, forgiveness, and Christian counseling.

The study will equally benefit society by promoting stable homes, peaceful coexistence, and reduced cases of divorce and family disintegration.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of forgiveness on the longevity of Christian marriages. The study will be limited to selected churches in Lagos State. It will examine how forgiveness influences marital stability, conflict resolution, emotional healing, and long-term marital relationships among Christian couples.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Forgiveness

Forgiveness refers to the willingness of a person to let go of anger, resentment, bitterness, or revenge toward another person after being offended.

Longevity

Longevity refers to the ability of a marriage to last for a long period in peace, stability, and unity.

Christian Marriage

Christian marriage is a union between a man and a woman based on biblical principles and recognized by the Christian faith.

Marital Stability

Marital stability refers to the condition in which couples maintain peaceful, harmonious, and enduring relationships without separation or divorce.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution refers to the process of peacefully settling disagreements and misunderstandings between spouses.
