INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is one of the oldest and most important social institutions created by God for companionship, procreation, emotional support, and societal stability. In Christianity, marriage is regarded as a sacred covenant ordained by God between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24). The stability of marriage is therefore essential not only for the well-being of couples and children but also for the spiritual and moral development of society. In recent years, however, marital instability has become a growing concern across the world, including Nigeria. Cases of divorce, separation, domestic violence, infidelity, and unresolved conflicts are increasingly common among married couples, including Christians (Akinade, 2016).

Premarital counselling has emerged as one of the major strategies adopted by churches and marriage counsellors to prepare intending couples for successful marital relationships. Premarital counselling refers to the educational and therapeutic process designed to help intending couples understand the responsibilities, expectations, challenges, and spiritual foundations of marriage before entering into marital union (Olson & DeFrain, 2014). In Pentecostal churches, premarital counselling is often mandatory before wedding solemnization and usually covers topics such as communication, finance, sexual relations, conflict resolution, family roles, parenting, and spiritual compatibility.

Pentecostal Christianity has experienced remarkable growth in Nigeria over the past few decades. Churches such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Living Faith Church Worldwide, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Christ Embassy, and Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries have established structured marriage counselling units aimed at strengthening family life among members. The emphasis on holiness, biblical teachings, prayer, and family values makes premarital counselling a significant component of Pentecostal ministry (Ukah, 2008).

Despite the widespread adoption of premarital counselling in Pentecostal churches, marital instability continues to affect many Christian homes in Nigeria. Reports of divorce, emotional abuse, financial misunderstanding, and incompatibility among church members have raised questions regarding the effectiveness of existing counselling programmes. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2021), family-related disputes and marital breakdowns have continued to rise in several Nigerian states despite increased religious participation. This suggests that religious involvement alone may not automatically guarantee stable marriages.

Marital stability refers to the ability of married couples to maintain a peaceful, satisfying, and enduring relationship over time despite challenges and disagreements. Stable marriages are characterized by effective communication, emotional intimacy, trust, commitment, conflict management, and mutual understanding (Karney & Bradbury, 2020). Studies have shown that couples who receive adequate premarital preparation tend to have healthier marital relationships compared to those who enter marriage without counselling (Stanley, Amato, Johnson, & Markman, 2006).

In many Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, premarital counselling programmes are rooted in biblical teachings and Christian ethics. Counsellors often emphasize scriptural principles relating to submission, love, forgiveness, patience, and mutual respect. Ephesians 5:22–33 and Colossians 3:18–19 are frequently used as foundational texts for marriage instruction. Such teachings are intended to prepare couples spiritually and psychologically for marital life.

Furthermore, premarital counselling helps intending couples identify personality differences, expectations, and areas of potential conflict before marriage. Counselling sessions often involve discussions on communication styles, financial planning, family backgrounds, reproductive health, and spiritual growth. According to Fowers and Olson (2010), couples who engage in structured premarital education develop better interpersonal skills and experience higher marital satisfaction.

The Nigerian socio-cultural environment also contributes to marital challenges. Economic hardship, unemployment, changing gender roles, social media influence, and declining communal values have placed enormous pressure on marriages. Pentecostal couples are not exempt from these realities. Consequently, premarital counselling has become increasingly necessary to equip couples with coping mechanisms and relationship skills needed for marital survival in contemporary society.

Scholars have observed that ineffective communication is one of the leading causes of marital conflict in Nigeria (Adebayo, 2019). Premarital counselling addresses this issue by teaching couples healthy communication strategies, listening skills, emotional expression, and constructive conflict resolution techniques. Through counselling, couples are encouraged to develop mutual understanding and realistic expectations concerning marriage.

Another important aspect of premarital counselling is financial management. Financial disagreements have been identified as major contributors to marital dissatisfaction and divorce (Dew, 2020). Pentecostal counselling programmes frequently teach couples budgeting, financial planning, savings culture, and responsible stewardship based on biblical principles. This helps reduce financial tensions after marriage.

Sexual compatibility and intimacy are also discussed during counselling sessions. Many Nigerian couples enter marriage with limited understanding of sexual expectations and reproductive health due to cultural and religious restrictions on open discussion about sexuality. Premarital counselling provides a safe platform for addressing such issues in a morally acceptable and educational manner (Parrott & Parrott, 2015).

In addition, premarital counselling promotes emotional maturity among intending couples. Counsellors often help couples understand anger management, emotional intelligence, forgiveness, patience, and tolerance. These qualities are essential for sustaining long-term marital relationships. Emotional instability and unmanaged expectations have contributed significantly to the collapse of many marriages.

Pentecostal churches in Nigeria also emphasize spiritual compatibility during counselling. Couples are encouraged to pray together, study the Bible, attend church activities, and build their relationship on Christian values. Spiritual intimacy is believed to strengthen emotional bonding and provide divine guidance in marriage. According to Mahoney (2013), shared religious commitment contributes positively to marital stability and satisfaction.

Nevertheless, critics argue that some premarital counselling programmes in Nigerian churches are too brief, theoretical, or generalized to adequately address the realities of modern marriage. Some churches reportedly focus more on doctrinal teachings than practical relationship skills. In certain cases, intending couples attend counselling merely as a requirement for church wedding without fully internalizing the lessons taught.

Moreover, there is limited empirical research specifically examining the influence of premarital counselling on marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus broadly on Christian marriage or family counselling without concentrating on Pentecostal contexts. This creates a gap in literature that this study seeks to address.

The study therefore intends to examine the influence of premarital counselling on marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria. The research will assess the effectiveness of counselling programmes in enhancing communication, conflict resolution, emotional maturity, spiritual compatibility, and overall marital satisfaction among couples.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marriage instability has become a major social and religious concern in contemporary Nigerian society. Cases of divorce, separation, domestic violence, infidelity, emotional neglect, and unresolved marital conflicts have continued to increase despite the strong religious nature of the country. Pentecostal churches, which emphasize biblical teachings and family values, have not been exempted from these marital challenges. Many Pentecostal couples who actively participate in church activities still experience marital dissatisfaction and instability after marriage.

In response to these growing marital problems, many Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have introduced premarital counselling programmes aimed at preparing intending couples for successful marital relationships. These counselling sessions are designed to provide spiritual guidance, emotional preparation, communication skills, financial management strategies, and conflict resolution techniques before marriage. However, despite the widespread practice of premarital counselling, marital instability among some Pentecostal couples continues to persist.

One major concern is that some intending couples attend premarital counselling merely to fulfill church requirements for wedding solemnization without genuine commitment to the counselling process. In some churches, counselling sessions are conducted within a short period and may not adequately address critical issues relating to personality differences, emotional compatibility, financial expectations, sexuality, and long-term marital adjustment. Consequently, many couples enter marriage with unrealistic expectations and insufficient preparation for marital responsibilities.

Another problem is the lack of standardized counselling procedures across Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. While some churches have well-structured counselling programmes handled by trained counsellors, others rely mainly on informal teachings by pastors or church elders who may not possess professional counselling skills. This inconsistency may affect the effectiveness of premarital counselling in promoting marital stability.

Furthermore, socio-economic pressures such as unemployment, inflation, changing gender roles, technological influence, and social media exposure have introduced new dimensions of marital conflict among Nigerian couples. Some premarital counselling programmes may not sufficiently address these modern realities affecting marriages in contemporary society. As a result, couples may still struggle with communication breakdown, financial disagreement, emotional incompatibility, and spiritual disconnection after marriage.

There is also inadequate empirical evidence specifically examining the relationship between premarital counselling and marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria. Although several studies have discussed Christian marriage and counselling generally, few have focused on Pentecostal churches and the practical impact of premarital counselling on marital outcomes. This gap in literature necessitates further investigation.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the influence of premarital counselling on marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria with a view to determining whether premarital counselling significantly contributes to stable and successful marriages.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to examine the influence of premarital counselling on marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the role of premarital counselling in promoting effective communication among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria;
2. determine the influence of premarital counselling on conflict resolution in marriage;
3. assess the impact of premarital counselling on emotional maturity and understanding among married couples;
4. investigate the relationship between premarital counselling and marital satisfaction among Pentecostal couples; and
5. evaluate the contribution of spiritual teachings during premarital counselling to marital stability.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What role does premarital counselling play in promoting effective communication among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria?
2. How does premarital counselling influence conflict resolution in marriage?
3. What impact does premarital counselling have on emotional maturity among married couples?
4. Is there a relationship between premarital counselling and marital satisfaction among Pentecostal couples?
5. How do spiritual teachings during premarital counselling contribute to marital stability?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between premarital counselling and marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between premarital counselling and marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to Pentecostal churches in Nigeria as it will provide insight into the effectiveness of premarital counselling programmes in promoting stable marriages. Church leaders and counsellors will understand areas requiring improvement in counselling practices and marital preparation.

The study will also benefit intending couples by helping them appreciate the importance of premarital counselling in building healthy and successful marriages. It will expose couples to practical marital skills necessary for sustaining long-term relationships.

Marriage counsellors and family therapists will find the study useful as it will contribute to existing knowledge on Christian marriage counselling and provide empirical evidence concerning the effectiveness of premarital counselling among Pentecostal couples.

The findings of the study will equally assist researchers and scholars in the field of theology, counselling psychology, sociology, and family studies by serving as reference material for future academic research.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to societal stability by promoting stronger family relationships and reducing cases of divorce, domestic violence, and marital conflict within Christian communities.

Finally, policy makers and religious organizations may use the findings of this study to develop more effective family life programmes and counselling policies aimed at strengthening marriages in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the influence of premarital counselling on marital stability among Pentecostal couples in Nigeria. The study will specifically examine how premarital counselling affects communication, conflict resolution, emotional maturity, spiritual compatibility, and marital satisfaction among married Pentecostal couples.

The study will be limited to selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria and married couples who have undergone premarital counselling before marriage.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Premarital Counselling:
A structured counselling programme organized for intending couples before marriage to prepare them emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and socially for marital life.

Marital Stability:
The ability of married couples to maintain a peaceful, satisfying, enduring, and harmonious relationship over time.

Pentecostal Couples:
Married couples who belong to Pentecostal churches and practice Pentecostal Christian beliefs and teachings.

Marriage Counselling:
Professional or religious guidance provided to couples to improve marital relationships and resolve family-related issues.

Conflict Resolution:
The process of addressing and settling disagreements or misunderstandings between marital partners peacefully and constructively.

Marital Satisfaction:
The degree of happiness, fulfillment, and contentment experienced by couples in marriage.
