CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Church fellowship has long been recognized as a vital instrument for promoting unity, spiritual harmony, and collective identity among believers. In the New Testament, the early Christian community demonstrated a strong sense of fellowship (koinonia), characterized by shared faith, communal living, breaking of bread, prayer, and mutual support (Acts 2:42–47). This unity was not merely symbolic but practical, as believers were described as being “of one heart and one soul” (Acts 4:32), reflecting the depth of their spiritual and relational bond (Fee, 1995).

Unity among believers is a central theme in Christian theology. Jesus Christ emphasized this in His high priestly prayer, asking that His followers “may be one, as We are one” (John 17:21). This prayer highlights unity as both a spiritual mandate and a visible testimony to the world. The Apostle Paul also repeatedly urged believers to maintain unity in the Spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3–6), stressing that the church is one body with many members working together for a common purpose (Stott, 2006).

In contemporary Christianity, church fellowship has taken structured forms such as inter-denominational gatherings, prayer meetings, ecumenical services, pastoral associations, and city-wide revival programs. These platforms are designed to foster unity among different Christian denominations and promote collective Christian witness in society. According to Walls and Ross (2008), ecumenical fellowship is essential for addressing doctrinal divisions and promoting cooperation among churches in a pluralistic society.

In urban Nigeria, where denominational diversity is highly pronounced, the role of church fellowship becomes even more significant. Cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt host numerous denominations including Pentecostal, Anglican, Catholic, Baptist, and independent ministries. While this diversity enriches Christian expression, it has also led to doctrinal differences, competition, and occasional conflicts among churches (Afolabi, 2022). These tensions sometimes weaken the collective Christian voice in addressing social, moral, and national issues.

Despite the existence of inter-denominational fellowship platforms such as Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), the level of unity among churches remains inconsistent. Some scholars argue that denominational loyalty, leadership rivalry, and doctrinal disagreements continue to hinder effective collaboration among churches (Ojo, 2021). This suggests that while fellowship structures exist, their effectiveness in promoting unity and resolving conflicts remains questionable.

Therefore, understanding the role of church fellowship in enhancing unity and conflict resolution among denominational churches in urban Nigeria is crucial for strengthening Christian cooperation and fostering peace within the body of Christ.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the biblical call for unity among believers, the Christian church in urban Nigeria remains fragmented along denominational lines. While numerous fellowship platforms exist to promote unity among churches, there is still evidence of doctrinal disagreements, leadership conflicts, and limited cooperation among denominations.

In many urban centers, denominational identity often takes precedence over shared Christian identity. Churches frequently operate independently, with minimal collaboration except during formal ecumenical events. Even within fellowship associations, disagreements over doctrine, leadership structures, and resource control have occasionally undermined collective efforts toward unity (Adogame, 2019).

Furthermore, conflict resolution among churches is often reactive rather than proactive. Instead of sustained fellowship-driven reconciliation mechanisms, disputes are sometimes addressed only when they escalate into public disagreements. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of existing fellowship structures in fostering lasting unity and harmony.

Another challenge is the competition for membership, influence, and resources among churches in urban areas. This competitive environment can weaken trust and reduce the willingness of churches to engage in meaningful fellowship. As a result, the intended purpose of fellowship as a unifying force is not fully realized.

The problem, therefore, is the apparent inability of church fellowship structures in urban Nigeria to effectively enhance unity and resolve conflicts among denominational churches. Without addressing this gap, the church risks continuing fragmentation that undermines its collective mission and witness in society.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of church fellowship in enhancing unity and conflict resolution among denominational churches in urban Nigeria.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the extent to which church fellowship promotes unity among denominational churches in urban Nigeria.
2. Investigate the role of church fellowship in conflict resolution among churches.
3. Identify factors affecting the effectiveness of church fellowship in fostering unity among denominations.
4. Assess the challenges hindering inter-denominational fellowship and cooperation in urban Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

1. To what extent does church fellowship promote unity among denominational churches in urban Nigeria?
2. How does church fellowship contribute to conflict resolution among churches?
3. What factors influence the effectiveness of church fellowship in fostering unity among denominations?
4. What challenges hinder inter-denominational fellowship and cooperation in urban Nigeria?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Church fellowship has no significant effect on unity and conflict resolution among denominational churches in urban Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to church leaders, ecumenical bodies, and Christian organizations by providing insights into how fellowship can be strengthened to promote unity among denominations. It will help organizations such as CAN and PFN improve their strategies for fostering collaboration and resolving conflicts among churches.

Academically, the study will contribute to the field of ecclesiology and practical theology by providing empirical understanding of inter-denominational relationships in Nigeria. It will also serve as a reference for researchers interested in church unity, conflict resolution, and religious cooperation in pluralistic societies.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of church fellowship in enhancing unity and conflict resolution among denominational churches in urban Nigeria. It is limited to selected urban areas and does not extend to rural church settings or non-Christian religious groups.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Church Fellowship: Organized interactions and relationships among Christian churches aimed at worship, cooperation, and spiritual unity.
• Unity: The state of being joined together in belief, purpose, and action among Christian denominations.
• Conflict Resolution: The process of addressing and resolving disagreements or disputes among churches.
• Denominational Churches: Distinct Christian groups with different doctrines, governance, and worship practices.
• Urban Nigeria: Major cities in Nigeria characterized by high population density and religious diversity.
