INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage occupies a foundational position within Christian theology, human society, and religious ethics. From the earliest biblical narratives, marriage is presented as an institution established by God for companionship, mutual support, procreation, and the development of human community. The creation account in Genesis 2:18–24 describes marriage as God’s response to human solitude and establishes the principle that a man and a woman become “one flesh” through a covenantal relationship. This understanding positions marriage not merely as a social arrangement but as a divine institution reflecting God’s purposes for human flourishing. Within Christian theology, marriage is therefore understood as a sacred covenant characterized by love, faithfulness, permanence, and mutual responsibility (Köstenberger & Jones, 2010).

The New Testament further develops the theological significance of marriage by presenting it as a reflection of the relationship between Christ and the Church. In Ephesians 5:21–33, the Apostle Paul compares the love, sacrifice, and commitment between husband and wife to Christ’s sacrificial love for His Church. This analogy elevates marriage beyond a legal or cultural institution and identifies it as a spiritual reality with theological meaning. Christian marriage therefore involves not only personal companionship but also discipleship, sanctification, and the demonstration of God’s covenant faithfulness in human relationships (Stott, 2006).

Despite the biblical ideal of marriage as a lifelong covenant, marital challenges have existed throughout human history. Issues such as conflict, unfaithfulness, abandonment, incompatibility, domestic abuse, economic pressures, infertility, and changing social expectations have contributed to marital instability across societies. Consequently, divorce and remarriage have become some of the most debated ethical and pastoral issues within Christian theology. The tension between maintaining the permanence of marriage and responding compassionately to broken marital relationships continues to challenge churches, theologians, and Christian families worldwide (Wenham, Heth, & Keener, 2006).

The Bible acknowledges the reality of human marital failure while consistently presenting marriage as God’s intended lifelong covenant. In the Old Testament, divorce existed within Israelite society, but it was never portrayed as the original divine intention for marriage. Deuteronomy 24:1–4 provides regulations concerning divorce but does not establish divorce as an ideal institution. Rather, prophetic writings emphasize God’s concern for covenant faithfulness. Malachi 2:13–16 presents divorce as a violation of the marital covenant and associates faithfulness in marriage with faithfulness toward God. This theological perspective establishes marriage as a covenant relationship requiring commitment and integrity.

Jesus Christ addressed the issue of divorce directly during His earthly ministry. In Matthew 19:3–9 and Mark 10:2–12, Jesus responded to questions concerning the legality of divorce by returning to God’s original design in creation. He declared that “what God has joined together, let no one separate,” emphasizing the permanence of marriage. Jesus explained that Moses permitted divorce because of human hardness of heart but clarified that such permission did not represent God’s original intention. This teaching remains central to Christian discussions concerning marriage, divorce, and remarriage (Keener, 1999).

However, Jesus’ statements concerning divorce contain what has become known as the “exception clause.” In Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9, Jesus indicated that divorce in cases of sexual immorality (porneia) differs from ordinary divorce. The interpretation of this exception has produced significant theological disagreement throughout Christian history. Some scholars understand porneia as referring specifically to marital unfaithfulness, while others interpret it more broadly as including unlawful sexual relationships. These differing interpretations have influenced various Christian positions concerning whether divorce and subsequent remarriage may be biblically permitted (Blomberg, 1992).

The writings of the Apostle Paul also contribute significantly to Christian understanding of marriage, divorce, and remarriage. In 1 Corinthians 7:10–15, Paul encourages married believers to remain together but addresses situations involving separation and abandonment by an unbelieving spouse. His statement that a believer is “not bound” when an unbelieving partner leaves has generated extensive theological debate regarding whether abandonment provides legitimate grounds for remarriage. Additionally, Romans 7:1–3 presents marriage as a covenant that ordinarily continues until death, reinforcing the seriousness and permanence of marital commitment.

Throughout Christian history, theologians have offered diverse interpretations regarding remarriage after divorce. The early Church generally emphasized the permanence of marriage and discouraged remarriage after divorce. Church Fathers such as Augustine viewed marriage as an indissoluble bond except through death, although they acknowledged the pastoral difficulties created by marital breakdown. Augustine’s writings significantly shaped Western Christian perspectives concerning marriage, sexuality, and marital fidelity (Augustine, 1998).

The medieval Catholic tradition developed a comprehensive theology of marriage based on the concepts of covenant, sacrament, and indissolubility. Thomas Aquinas argued that Christian marriage possesses a unique spiritual character because it represents Christ’s union with the Church. Within Roman Catholic theology, a valid sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved by human authority, although separation may occur under certain circumstances. Consequently, remarriage after divorce is generally not permitted unless a church tribunal determines that a valid marriage never existed (Aquinas, 1947).

The Protestant Reformation introduced significant changes in Christian perspectives concerning marriage and remarriage. Reformers such as Martin Luther and John Calvin challenged aspects of medieval Catholic teaching, emphasizing Scripture as the ultimate authority and arguing that certain biblical circumstances could permit divorce and remarriage. Luther viewed marriage primarily as a social institution under God’s authority, while Calvin recognized adultery and abandonment as possible grounds for divorce and remarriage. These perspectives influenced many Protestant traditions that continue to permit remarriage under specific conditions (Calvin, 1960).

Modern evangelical theology remains divided concerning remarriage after divorce. Some conservative traditions maintain that remarriage is prohibited while a former spouse remains alive except in cases explicitly permitted by Scripture. Others argue that biblical exceptions allow remarriage following adultery, abandonment, or circumstances where reconciliation is impossible. Scholars such as John Murray and Wayne Grudem emphasize biblical fidelity while acknowledging the complexity of applying biblical principles to contemporary marital situations (Murray, 1961; Grudem, 2020).

The relationship between marriage, remarriage, and salvation introduces another important theological dimension. Christianity teaches that salvation is based upon God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ rather than human moral perfection (Ephesians 2:8–9). However, Christian ethics also teaches that believers are called to holiness, repentance, obedience, and transformation. Consequently, questions arise concerning the spiritual status of divorced and remarried Christians, their participation in church life, their eligibility for leadership, and their relationship with God.

Some Christian traditions have historically viewed remarriage after divorce as evidence of continuing disobedience, particularly where divorce occurred without biblical justification. In such contexts, divorced and remarried individuals have sometimes faced restrictions regarding church leadership, communion participation, or ministry involvement. Other traditions emphasize God’s forgiveness, restoration, and grace, arguing that genuine repentance and faith restore believers to full fellowship within the Christian community. This tension between moral accountability and divine grace remains central to pastoral discussions.

The doctrine of salvation provides an essential framework for addressing marital failure. The Christian message emphasizes redemption, forgiveness, and transformation through Christ. The New Testament presents examples of individuals who experienced significant moral failures yet received restoration through God’s grace (John 8:1–11; 1 Corinthians 6:9–11). Consequently, many theologians argue that pastoral responses to divorce and remarriage must reflect both the seriousness of sin and the availability of God’s forgiveness.

Contemporary society has introduced new challenges for Christian perspectives on marriage and remarriage. Rising divorce rates, changing cultural attitudes toward marriage, increased individualism, economic pressures, gender role transformations, and legal reforms have altered how societies understand marital relationships. These changes have affected Christian communities globally, including Nigeria, where churches increasingly encounter members facing divorce, separation, blended families, and remarriage decisions.

Nigeria provides a significant context for examining these issues because marriage remains highly valued within both Christian and African cultural traditions. Nigerian society generally views marriage as a communal institution involving extended families, religious communities, and cultural expectations. Consequently, divorce often carries social consequences beyond the separation of spouses, affecting family relationships, community reputation, and religious identity (Mbiti, 1990).

The Nigerian Christian environment is characterized by diverse denominational traditions, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal, Evangelical, and African Indigenous Churches. These traditions differ considerably in their theological approaches to divorce, remarriage, church discipline, and pastoral restoration. While some churches maintain strict restrictions against remarriage after divorce, others adopt more flexible approaches emphasizing grace, counselling, and restoration. Such diversity creates practical challenges for Christians seeking biblical guidance.

Pastoral ministry increasingly requires churches to respond to complex marital realities. Ministers and counsellors encounter situations involving domestic violence, abandonment, repeated infidelity, forced marriages, and marriages entered into before genuine conversion. In such cases, simplistic approaches to divorce and remarriage may fail to address the emotional, spiritual, and social realities experienced by believers. Therefore, churches require balanced theological frameworks that combine biblical truth with compassionate pastoral care.

African Christian theology has emphasized the importance of contextualizing biblical teachings within African realities. Scholars such as John Mbiti and Kwame Bediako argue that Christianity must engage African cultural experiences while maintaining fidelity to biblical revelation. Marriage, family, and community relationships are particularly important areas where contextual theology is required because African understandings of relationships often differ from Western individualistic perspectives (Bediako, 1995).

Although numerous studies have examined marriage, divorce, and remarriage from biblical, theological, sociological, and psychological perspectives, limited research has comprehensively integrated these issues within the framework of salvation theology and pastoral practice. Many studies focus either on biblical interpretation of divorce texts or on practical counselling approaches without sufficiently examining how doctrines of grace, repentance, forgiveness, and salvation influence Christian responses to marital challenges.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine marriage, remarriage, and salvation in Christian theology by evaluating biblical teachings and pastoral responses to contemporary marital challenges. The study aims to provide a balanced theological framework that recognizes the sanctity of marriage, the seriousness of marital failure, and the transformative power of God’s grace in restoring individuals and families.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marriage remains one of the most significant institutions within Christian theology and human society. The Bible presents marriage as a divine covenant established by God for companionship, procreation, mutual responsibility, and spiritual unity (Genesis 2:18–24; Ephesians 5:22–33). However, the reality of marital failure through divorce has created complex theological and pastoral questions for the contemporary Church. Among these questions is whether divorced individuals may legitimately remarry, how such remarriage relates to biblical teachings on marriage permanence, and whether marital failure affects an individual’s relationship with God and participation in the Christian community.

The tension between the biblical ideal of lifelong marriage and the reality of broken marital relationships represents a significant challenge within Christian theology. While Jesus strongly affirmed the permanence of marriage and condemned casual divorce (Matthew 19:4–6; Mark 10:9), certain biblical passages appear to recognize exceptional circumstances such as sexual immorality and abandonment (Matthew 19:9; 1 Corinthians 7:15). The interpretation of these passages has resulted in diverse theological positions among Christian traditions. Some churches prohibit remarriage after divorce except in narrowly defined situations, while others permit remarriage under broader circumstances. This lack of theological consensus has created uncertainty among believers and challenges for pastoral ministry.

A major problem concerns the relationship between remarriage after divorce and the doctrine of salvation. Christianity teaches that salvation is a gift of God’s grace received through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9). However, questions remain concerning how the Church should respond to believers whose marriages have ended and who enter new marital relationships. Some traditions emphasize repentance, restoration, and God’s forgiveness, while others maintain that remarriage after an illegitimate divorce constitutes continued disobedience to God’s marital design. The theological tension between divine grace and moral responsibility remains unresolved in many Christian communities.

Another significant problem is the inconsistency among Christian denominations regarding the pastoral treatment of divorced and remarried individuals. In some churches, divorced persons may experience restrictions regarding leadership roles, ministry involvement, or participation in certain church activities. In other churches, remarried individuals are fully accepted without significant disciplinary consequences. These variations often create confusion among Christians and raise questions about whether church practices accurately reflect biblical teachings concerning sin, forgiveness, and restoration.

The problem is further complicated by contemporary social realities that contribute to marital breakdown. Factors such as domestic violence, economic hardship, infertility, emotional abuse, substance abuse, migration, unfaithfulness, and changing cultural expectations have increased the complexity of marital challenges facing Christians today. In some situations, maintaining a marriage may expose individuals to continuous harm, while in others, divorce may result from preventable conflicts or personal failures. Consequently, churches must develop pastoral approaches that uphold biblical principles while responding compassionately to the realities of broken families.

Within the Nigerian Christian context, these challenges are particularly significant because marriage is deeply connected to cultural identity, family honour, and communal relationships. Nigerian society generally places strong emphasis on marriage as a social institution involving not only spouses but also extended families and religious communities. Divorce may therefore produce emotional, social, and spiritual consequences beyond the separation of husband and wife. Divorced individuals, especially women, may experience stigma, rejection, and difficulty rebuilding their lives. These realities require careful theological reflection concerning remarriage, forgiveness, and pastoral restoration.

Furthermore, Nigerian Christianity consists of diverse theological traditions with different approaches to marriage and remarriage. The Roman Catholic Church maintains the indissolubility of sacramental marriage and generally does not recognize remarriage after divorce unless a declaration of nullity is granted. Many Protestant denominations recognize biblical exceptions that may permit remarriage, while Pentecostal and Evangelical churches often differ depending on their interpretation of Scripture and pastoral philosophy. This diversity has produced inconsistent practices and varying expectations among Christian believers.

Another problem is the limited integration of salvation theology into discussions concerning remarriage. Many theological debates focus primarily on whether remarriage is legally or biblically permissible, while insufficient attention is given to broader questions of grace, redemption, sanctification, repentance, and spiritual restoration. A comprehensive Christian approach requires examining not only the legitimacy of remarriage but also how God’s saving work addresses human failure, broken relationships, and new beginnings.

Existing academic studies have extensively examined biblical teachings on marriage and divorce, theological interpretations of remarriage, and counselling approaches to marital conflict. However, relatively fewer studies have explored the relationship between marriage, remarriage, and salvation as interconnected theological themes. This represents a significant gap because Christian responses to marital challenges cannot be adequately understood without considering the broader doctrines of sin, grace, forgiveness, redemption, and spiritual transformation.

Similarly, much existing literature has emerged from Western theological contexts and may not fully address the cultural realities of African Christianity, particularly Nigeria. African societies often possess communal understandings of marriage and family that differ from individualistic Western perspectives. Therefore, there is a need for theological research that examines how biblical teachings concerning remarriage and salvation can be faithfully applied within Nigerian Christian communities.

The problem addressed by this study, therefore, is the continuing tension between biblical teachings on marriage permanence, contemporary realities of marital breakdown, diverse church practices concerning remarriage, and theological understandings of salvation and restoration. The absence of a comprehensive biblical and pastoral framework has contributed to confusion among believers, inconsistent church responses, and difficulties in providing effective pastoral care for Christians experiencing marital challenges. This study seeks to address this gap by examining marriage, remarriage, and salvation in Christian theology and evaluating biblical and pastoral responses to contemporary marital challenges.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The aim of this study is to examine marriage, remarriage, and salvation in Christian theology by evaluating biblical teachings and pastoral responses to contemporary marital challenges.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. examine the biblical foundations and theological significance of marriage.
2. analyze biblical teachings concerning divorce and remarriage.
3. evaluate the relationship between remarriage and the Christian doctrine of salvation.
4. examine contemporary pastoral responses to divorced and remarried Christians.
5. propose a biblically and pastorally balanced framework for addressing marital challenges within the Christian Church.

1.5 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the biblical and theological foundations of marriage?
2. What does Scripture teach concerning divorce and remarriage?
3. How does the doctrine of salvation influence Christian understanding of remarriage after divorce?
4. How do contemporary churches respond pastorally to divorced and remarried Christians?
5. What theological and pastoral approaches can guide Christian responses to contemporary marital challenges?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between biblical teachings on marriage and remarriage and contemporary pastoral responses to marital challenges within Christian churches.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to Christian theological scholarship by providing an integrated examination of marriage, remarriage, and salvation. It will demonstrate how these doctrines are interconnected within biblical theology and Christian ethics.

The study will benefit pastors, priests, church leaders, and marriage counsellors by providing theological insights that can guide pastoral responses to divorced and remarried individuals. It will assist church leaders in balancing biblical faithfulness with compassion, restoration, and grace.

Christian couples and families will benefit from the study through a deeper understanding of God’s design for marriage, the consequences of marital breakdown, and the possibilities of spiritual restoration through Christ.

The research will contribute to theological education by providing useful material for courses in Christian Ethics, Marriage and Family Ministry, Pastoral Theology, Biblical Studies, and Systematic Theology.

The study will also assist Nigerian churches in developing culturally relevant approaches to marital challenges. By considering both biblical teachings and African family realities, the research will provide a framework for addressing contemporary issues surrounding divorce and remarriage.

Furthermore, the study will promote greater understanding among different Christian traditions by examining areas of agreement and disagreement regarding marriage, remarriage, and salvation. It may encourage respectful theological dialogue between Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal, and Evangelical communities.

Finally, the research will serve as a reference resource for future scholars investigating Christian marriage, divorce theology, pastoral counselling, salvation doctrine, and African Christian ethics.

1.8 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on marriage, remarriage, and salvation within Christian theology, with particular emphasis on biblical teachings and pastoral responses to contemporary marital challenges. It examines relevant biblical texts concerning marriage, divorce, remarriage, forgiveness, and redemption. The study also considers theological perspectives from major Christian traditions and their implications for pastoral ministry.

The research is limited to theological and biblical analysis. Although cultural and pastoral contexts, particularly within Nigeria, are considered, the study does not undertake detailed legal, psychological, or sociological investigation of divorce and remarriage.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Marriage: A covenant relationship between a man and a woman established by God and recognized within Christian theology as a sacred institution.

Remarriage: The act of entering into a new marital relationship after the dissolution of a previous marriage through divorce or separation.

Divorce: The legal, social, or religious dissolution of a marital relationship between husband and wife.

Salvation: God’s act of delivering humanity from sin and restoring relationship with Him through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Christian Theology: The systematic study and interpretation of Christian beliefs, doctrines, and teachings based on Scripture and theological reflection.

Pastoral Response: The practical ministry actions, counselling approaches, and spiritual guidance provided by church leaders to address human needs and challenges.

Marital Challenges: Difficulties affecting marriage, including conflict, separation, divorce, infidelity, abuse, economic hardship, and communication problems.

Contemporary Church Practices: The current teachings, policies, and pastoral approaches adopted by Christian communities regarding marriage, divorce, and remarriage.
