Project – The Role of Pastoral Counselling in Promoting Spiritual and Emotional Wellbeing among Church Members: A Study of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Lagos
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Counselling has remained an important aspect of human development, emotional adjustment, and spiritual growth across societies. It involves a structured helping relationship in which an individual receives guidance, support, encouragement, and assistance in dealing with personal, emotional, social, and spiritual challenges. Within the Christian tradition, counselling is not merely viewed as a psychological activity but also as a ministry of care rooted in biblical principles of love, compassion, restoration, and transformation. Christian counselling, particularly pastoral counselling, seeks to address the totality of human experiences by integrating spiritual understanding with emotional and psychological support (Collins, 2007).
The church has historically served as a centre for spiritual nurturing, moral formation, and emotional support. From the early Christian communities, believers were encouraged to support one another through prayer, encouragement, correction, and practical assistance. The New Testament presents the ministry of caring for people as an essential responsibility of Christian leaders. For instance, Galatians 6:2 encourages believers to “bear one another’s burdens,” while Romans 12:15 emphasizes empathy through rejoicing and suffering with others. These biblical principles provide the foundation for pastoral counselling as a ministry concerned with the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of individuals.
Pastoral counselling emerged as a specialized form of counselling within religious contexts where pastors and trained Christian caregivers assist individuals facing various life challenges. According to Hiltner (1958), pastoral counselling is a form of ministry that focuses on the care of souls through meaningful relationships between religious leaders and individuals seeking help. It combines theological understanding with counselling skills to address issues such as grief, anxiety, marital challenges, spiritual struggles, emotional distress, and personal crises.
The contemporary world has witnessed increasing social, emotional, and spiritual challenges that affect individuals and communities. Issues such as economic hardship, family instability, loneliness, depression, fear, identity crises, and moral confusion have created a greater need for supportive counselling services. Although professional psychological services exist, many individuals, especially within religious communities, continue to seek assistance from pastors because of the trust, accessibility, and spiritual connection associated with church leaders (Pargament, 2011). In many African societies, including Nigeria, religious leaders often serve as first points of contact for individuals experiencing emotional or personal difficulties.
Spiritual wellbeing refers to an individual’s sense of connection with God, understanding of life purpose, inner peace, faith commitment, and ability to find meaning through spiritual beliefs. Ellison (1983) explains that spiritual wellbeing involves both a religious dimension, which relates to one’s relationship with God, and an existential dimension, which concerns meaning, purpose, and satisfaction with life. Within Christian communities, spiritual wellbeing is often demonstrated through prayer life, faith development, moral transformation, and confidence in God’s promises.
Emotional wellbeing, on the other hand, involves the ability of individuals to understand, manage, and express emotions effectively while maintaining healthy relationships and coping with life challenges. According to Keyes (2002), emotional wellbeing is an important component of mental health that reflects positive functioning, life satisfaction, and psychological resilience. When individuals experience emotional difficulties without adequate support, their spiritual life, relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life may be negatively affected.
Pastoral counselling plays a significant role in promoting both spiritual and emotional wellbeing among church members. Through counselling sessions, pastors provide encouragement, biblical guidance, prayer support, and practical advice to individuals experiencing personal struggles. The counselling relationship allows members to express their concerns in a safe and supportive environment while receiving spiritual direction and emotional assistance. According to McMinn (2011), effective Christian counselling recognizes the importance of integrating faith, compassion, and professional helping skills in addressing human problems.
In Nigeria, churches have become significant institutions for social and emotional support due to the strong influence of Christianity on everyday life. Pentecostal and charismatic churches, in particular, emphasize spiritual restoration, healing, deliverance, prayer, and personal transformation. Among these churches, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) is widely recognized for its emphasis on prayer, spiritual warfare, deliverance, and addressing spiritual challenges affecting individuals and families. As a Pentecostal ministry, MFM provides various spiritual programmes and pastoral services aimed at helping members overcome challenges and experience personal transformation.
The growth of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria has increased attention to the role of pastoral leadership in addressing the needs of church members. Pastors are not only expected to preach sermons and lead worship services but also to provide counselling and pastoral care. Many church members approach pastors concerning issues such as marital conflicts, financial difficulties, emotional distress, spiritual attacks, family problems, and personal decisions. Therefore, pastoral counselling has become an essential ministry function for promoting holistic wellbeing among believers.
However, despite the importance of pastoral counselling, questions remain regarding its effectiveness in promoting spiritual and emotional wellbeing among church members. While many individuals testify to the positive impact of counselling received from pastors, others may experience limitations due to factors such as inadequate counselling skills, lack of confidentiality, limited time availability, or excessive reliance on spiritual explanations without addressing psychological dimensions of problems. These concerns highlight the need to examine how pastoral counselling contributes to the wellbeing of church members.
Research has shown that religion and spirituality can positively influence coping mechanisms, resilience, and emotional adjustment. Pargament (1997) argues that religious coping provides individuals with resources for managing stressful experiences by offering meaning, hope, and a sense of connection with the divine. However, the effectiveness of religious support depends on the quality of guidance and the ability of religious leaders to provide appropriate care. Therefore, studying pastoral counselling practices within specific church contexts is important for understanding their contribution to members’ wellbeing.
The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Lagos, provides an appropriate context for examining this relationship because of its emphasis on spiritual growth, prayer, deliverance, and personal transformation. Understanding how pastoral counselling functions within the ministry can provide insights into its effectiveness in strengthening members spiritually and emotionally. It can also reveal areas where pastoral counselling practices may require improvement to better serve the needs of contemporary church members.
Therefore, this study examines the role of pastoral counselling in promoting spiritual and emotional wellbeing among church members in Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Lagos. The study seeks to determine the availability of pastoral counselling services, assess their contribution to spiritual growth, examine their influence on emotional wellbeing, and identify challenges affecting effective pastoral counselling within the church.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing complexity of human experiences in contemporary society has created a growing need for effective counselling and emotional support services. Many individuals experience challenges such as stress, anxiety, family conflicts, financial pressures, loneliness, spiritual confusion, and emotional instability. Within the church environment, members often turn to pastors and spiritual leaders for guidance, encouragement, prayer, and counselling because of the trust and spiritual authority associated with pastoral leadership.
Although pastoral counselling is widely practiced in many churches in Nigeria, concerns exist regarding its effectiveness in addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of church members. Some church members continue to struggle with emotional distress, spiritual dissatisfaction, and personal challenges despite participating in church activities and receiving pastoral attention. This raises questions about whether existing pastoral counselling approaches adequately address the complex needs of members.
One major problem is that some pastoral counselling practices may focus predominantly on spiritual explanations of problems while giving limited attention to emotional, psychological, and social factors influencing individuals’ experiences. While spiritual support remains essential within Christian counselling, failure to recognize emotional and psychological dimensions may limit the effectiveness of counselling interventions.
Another challenge is the limited availability of structured pastoral counselling services in some churches. Pastors often have multiple responsibilities, including preaching, administration, evangelism, and leadership duties, which may reduce the amount of time available for individual counselling sessions. Additionally, some members may hesitate to seek counselling due to concerns about confidentiality, stigma, or fear of judgment.
Furthermore, despite the importance of pastoral counselling in Pentecostal churches such as Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, there is limited empirical research examining its specific contribution to the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of members. Much of the available discussion focuses on the theological importance of pastoral care rather than measuring its practical impact on church members’ lives.
This gap creates the need for an empirical study that investigates the role of pastoral counselling in promoting spiritual and emotional wellbeing among members of MFM, Lagos. The study therefore seeks to examine whether pastoral counselling services contribute significantly to members’ spiritual growth, emotional stability, and overall wellbeing, while also identifying challenges that may hinder effective counselling ministry.
