CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

University education is increasingly characterized by a learning environment in which students are expected to assume greater responsibility for their academic progress. Unlike many secondary-school settings where learning activities are closely supervised by teachers and parents, university students are generally required to determine when, where and how they study, complete assignments, prepare for examinations, search for information and regulate their academic behaviour. This transition makes students’ capacity for self-management particularly important. Self-regulated learning therefore occupies an important place in higher education because successful students are expected not merely to possess intellectual ability but also to plan their learning, monitor their progress, manage their time, control distractions and modify their strategies when necessary (Zimmerman, 2002; Panadero, 2017).

Self-regulated learning (SRL) refers broadly to the processes through which learners actively regulate their thoughts, motivation and behaviour in pursuit of academic goals. Zimmerman (2002) explains that self-regulated learners are proactive in setting goals, selecting strategies, monitoring their performance and evaluating the outcomes of their learning. Rather than depending entirely on lecturers to direct every aspect of their academic activities, self-regulated students take personal responsibility for organizing and sustaining their learning. Such students are more likely to establish study schedules, set academic priorities, monitor their understanding of course materials, seek assistance when necessary and adjust ineffective learning strategies. The importance of SRL is particularly relevant in university education because students are exposed to greater academic freedom and consequently greater opportunities for both productive and unproductive choices.

The transition to university, however, does not automatically equip students with effective self-regulatory skills. Students may enter higher education with different levels of time-management ability, motivation, self-efficacy, study skills and capacity for controlling impulses. Oladele (2024), in a study of factors predicting self-regulated learning in a Nigerian public university, observed that university students often encounter difficulties in adapting to the self-directed learning environment of higher education. The study emphasizes the importance of factors that enable students to take responsibility for their own learning. This Nigerian evidence is significant because it demonstrates that self-regulated learning is not merely a theoretical concern but a practical issue within the country’s university system.

One behaviour that may undermine effective self-regulated learning is academic procrastination. Academic procrastination involves voluntarily postponing an intended academic activity despite recognizing that the delay may result in undesirable consequences. It can manifest in delaying the commencement of assignments, postponing reading until examinations are close, putting off research work, delaying preparation for tests, failing to begin projects early, or repeatedly replacing important academic tasks with less important activities. Steel (2007) describes procrastination as a form of self-regulatory failure and identifies factors such as task aversiveness, impulsiveness, self-efficacy and distractibility as important correlates. Thus, procrastination is not simply a matter of poor time management; it can involve difficulties in regulating motivation, emotions, attention and behaviour.

The academic environment provides several conditions under which procrastination can develop. University assignments may have deadlines that are weeks or months away, creating a temporal gap between the present effort and the future academic reward. Students may consequently choose activities that provide immediate pleasure or relief rather than activities whose benefits will occur later. Sirois and Pychyl (2013) argue that procrastination is closely connected with short-term mood regulation. When students perceive an academic task as boring, difficult, stressful or unpleasant, postponing the task may provide immediate emotional relief. The student may experience temporary satisfaction by watching videos, chatting with friends, browsing social media or engaging in entertainment rather than beginning the academic activity. Although such avoidance may improve mood temporarily, the academic task remains unfinished and may subsequently produce greater pressure.

The relationship between academic procrastination and educational outcomes has received considerable empirical attention. Kim and Seo (2015), in a meta-analysis involving 33 studies and 38,529 participants, found a negative relationship between procrastination and academic performance. Their findings suggest that although the strength of the relationship can vary depending on how procrastination and academic performance are measured, procrastination generally tends to be associated with poorer academic outcomes. The implication is that persistent postponement of academic responsibilities may interfere with the amount of time available for learning, revision and careful completion of academic work.

Academic procrastination is also closely connected with self-regulated learning. Students who regulate their learning effectively are expected to establish goals, organize their study activities, monitor their progress and control behaviours that interfere with goal attainment. Procrastination represents a potential breakdown in one or more of these processes. Park and Sperling (2012) examined academic procrastination from a self-regulated learning perspective and found that academic procrastination was associated with poor self-regulatory skills and defensive behaviours. This perspective is useful because it shifts the discussion from viewing procrastination simply as laziness to understanding it as a behavioural problem involving motivation, planning, monitoring and control.

The emergence of digital technologies has introduced another important dimension to this problem. Smartphones, social media platforms, instant messaging applications, online videos, streaming services, gaming platforms and other digital technologies have become integrated into the everyday lives of university students. These technologies can provide valuable academic resources. Students can access electronic books, scholarly articles, online lectures, learning management systems, dictionaries, educational applications and communication platforms through digital devices. Consequently, digital technology should not be viewed exclusively as a threat to learning. The challenge lies in how students manage the competing academic and non-academic opportunities provided by these technologies.

Digital distraction occurs when digital devices, applications, notifications or online activities divert a student’s attention away from an intended academic task. Digital distraction can occur during lectures, private study, library work, group assignments or examination preparation. For example, a student who intends to spend one hour reading may repeatedly interrupt the activity to respond to WhatsApp messages, check Instagram, watch short videos, browse entertainment content or respond to social media notifications. Each individual interruption may appear insignificant, but repeated interruptions can fragment attention and reduce the continuity of learning.

The problem is particularly important because digital technologies are simultaneously tools for learning and sources of distraction. Egielewa (2021), in research involving 380 students from two Nigerian higher institutions, found that smartphones could function both as aids and distractions to undergraduate studies. The study concluded that smartphones can support academic activities through useful applications but can also become distractions when their use is uncontrolled. This finding is especially relevant to Nigerian university students because smartphones are increasingly used for communication, internet access, academic research and entertainment. The educational question is therefore not whether students should use digital devices, but whether they are able to regulate their use in ways that support rather than undermine academic goals.

International evidence also suggests a relationship between smartphone use, distraction and academic behaviour. Troll, Friese and Loschelder (2021) found that students with stronger trait self-control reported less smartphone-related distraction during learning and that smartphone use was related to academic performance. Their findings further identified procrastination and phone-placement habits as relevant mechanisms connecting self-control and academic outcomes. This suggests that digital distraction cannot be understood independently of students’ self-regulatory capacities. A student who possesses strong self-control may be able to use a smartphone for academic purposes without becoming excessively distracted, whereas another student may find it difficult to resist non-academic digital activities.

Similarly, a meta-analysis by Hidalgo-Fuentes (2022) involving 18 studies and 8,679 participants found a moderate positive relationship between problematic smartphone use and academic procrastination. This finding is particularly important to the present study because it suggests that problematic digital behaviour and postponement of academic activities may be interconnected rather than completely separate problems. Students who frequently engage in uncontrolled smartphone use may be more likely to postpone academic responsibilities, while students who are already inclined to procrastinate may use smartphones and other digital activities as convenient forms of avoidance.

The relationship between digital distraction and academic performance, however, should not be treated as completely straightforward. Bjerre-Nielsen et al. (2020), using longitudinal data from 470 university students over two years, found that smartphone use during class was negatively associated with grades, although the estimated magnitude of the relationship was substantially reduced after accounting for stable student and course characteristics. This finding provides an important caution against assuming that every instance of smartphone use automatically produces academic failure. The purpose of the present study is therefore not to portray technology as inherently harmful but to investigate whether digital distraction, particularly when it interferes with students’ academic activities, is associated with academic procrastination and self-regulated learning.

The contemporary university student therefore operates within a complex digital learning environment. A smartphone may be used to download lecture materials, participate in an academic WhatsApp group, access a journal article or communicate with a lecturer. The same device can, within seconds, become a source of entertainment or social interaction. This dual function makes digital self-regulation increasingly important. Students need to determine when digital technology supports their academic objectives and when it becomes an obstacle to those objectives.

The concept of self-regulated learning provides an appropriate framework for understanding this challenge. Panadero (2017), in a comprehensive review of six major models of self-regulated learning, demonstrates that SRL involves interconnected processes of planning, monitoring, regulation and reflection. These processes enable students to adapt their behaviour according to academic demands. In a digitally saturated environment, self-regulation may include deciding when to put away a smartphone, disabling notifications, setting specific study periods, limiting access to entertainment platforms, establishing realistic academic goals and monitoring whether digital behaviour is helping or hindering academic progress.

Self-regulated learning is particularly important in higher education because university students are expected to exercise considerable autonomy. Zimmerman (2002) emphasizes that self-regulated learners do not simply react to academic demands; they proactively establish goals and organize their behaviour around those goals. Consequently, students who are unable to control distractions or who consistently postpone academic activities may experience difficulties in sustaining effective learning routines.

The Nigerian university environment provides an important context for examining these issues. Nigerian higher education has experienced significant expansion in student access to digital technologies. Students increasingly depend on smartphones and internet-enabled devices for academic communication, access to learning materials, registration information, research activities and social interaction. At the same time, students face the same challenges associated with digital multitasking and attention fragmentation reported in international literature. Egielewa’s (2021) Nigerian study provides evidence that smartphones have both academic benefits and distracting effects, demonstrating the need to examine how students actually manage these devices in educational contexts.

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) provides a particularly relevant setting for this investigation. The University of Benin is a government-owned Nigerian university established on 23 November 1970. Its stated objective is to advance knowledge, wisdom and understanding through teaching and research, with service to the community as an important purpose. Its mission also emphasizes the development of creative, innovative and competent graduates. These institutional objectives require students to engage seriously with academic activities and develop the capacity to manage their learning responsibilities.

As a large university environment, UNIBEN provides students with considerable opportunities for independent learning, research, social interaction and digital engagement. Students may have access to smartphones, laptops, internet services, social media, online learning resources and other digital platforms. These resources can enhance learning when properly managed. However, the same digital environment may create competing demands for students’ attention. Students may move between academic materials and entertainment platforms within the same study session, making attention management increasingly important.

The issue is therefore not simply whether UNIBEN students use smartphones or social media. Digital technology is already an important component of contemporary student life. The more significant question is whether students’ patterns of digital engagement interfere with their ability to regulate academic behaviour. A student who spends substantial study time responding to messages or consuming entertainment content may have less time for reading and assignment completion. Similarly, a student who repeatedly postpones academic tasks may be more vulnerable to digital distractions because online activities offer immediate rewards and require relatively little effort.

Academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning can consequently be conceptualized as interconnected dimensions of students’ academic behaviour. Academic procrastination concerns the postponement of intended academic activities; digital distraction concerns the diversion of attention toward non-academic digital activities; while self-regulated learning concerns the student’s ability to plan, monitor and control learning-related thoughts, motivation and behaviour. Examining these variables together may provide a more comprehensive understanding of why some students are able to maintain productive academic routines in a digital environment while others struggle with delay and distraction.

This study is therefore designed to examine academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning among university students, using the University of Benin as the study setting. The study seeks to determine the extent to which students engage in academic procrastination, identify major forms of digital distraction experienced by students, assess their level of self-regulated learning and examine the relationship among these variables. By focusing specifically on UNIBEN students, the study is expected to generate context-specific evidence that can contribute to discussions about student learning behaviour, digital wellbeing and academic support in Nigerian universities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

University education requires students to become increasingly responsible for their own academic activities. Students are expected to attend lectures, read independently, complete assignments, conduct research, prepare for examinations and meet academic deadlines. These responsibilities require planning, time management, concentration, persistence and the ability to regulate behaviour. However, the existence of academic freedom can also create opportunities for students to postpone important tasks or devote substantial time to activities that do not contribute directly to their academic objectives.

Academic procrastination constitutes one of the behavioural challenges that may interfere with effective university learning. Students may know that an assignment is due at a particular time but delay starting it until the deadline approaches. Others may postpone reading until examination periods, repeatedly put off research activities or spend available study time on less important tasks. The problem becomes more serious when procrastination becomes habitual because delayed academic activities can accumulate, increasing workload and reducing the opportunity for careful preparation. Research evidence generally associates procrastination with poorer academic outcomes (Kim & Seo, 2015; Steel, 2007).

The problem is not necessarily that students lack awareness of their responsibilities. Many students understand the importance of completing assignments and preparing for examinations early but nevertheless postpone these activities. This apparent contradiction suggests that academic procrastination involves more than a simple lack of knowledge. It may reflect difficulties with self-control, task initiation, motivation, emotional regulation, time management and the ability to prioritize long-term academic goals over immediate sources of gratification. Sirois and Pychyl (2013) particularly emphasize the role of short-term mood regulation, whereby students may postpone unpleasant academic activities because avoidance provides temporary emotional relief.

At the same time, the digital environment has created new and easily accessible sources of distraction. Smartphones and internet-enabled devices allow students to receive messages, social media notifications, videos and other forms of digital content while studying. The problem is intensified by the fact that the same devices students use to access academic resources are also used for entertainment and social interaction. Thus, a student may begin a study session by opening a smartphone to search for academic information but subsequently become involved in unrelated digital activities.

Evidence from Nigeria demonstrates that smartphones can operate as both academic tools and distractions. Egielewa (2021) found among students in two Nigerian higher institutions that smartphones could support studies through useful applications while also distracting students when their use was not properly controlled. This dual nature of smartphones creates an important educational challenge: restricting technology completely may deprive students of useful learning resources, while uncontrolled use may interfere with concentration and academic engagement.

International research further indicates that digital distraction can be connected with broader self-regulatory processes. Troll et al. (2021) found that students with stronger self-control experienced less smartphone-related distraction during learning, while smartphone use and procrastination were among the factors relevant to the relationship between self-control and academic performance. Hidalgo-Fuentes (2022) also reported a moderate positive relationship between problematic smartphone use and academic procrastination. These findings suggest that digital distraction and academic procrastination may reinforce each other in ways that make academic self-management more difficult.

The problem, therefore, may be viewed as a cycle. A student may encounter an academic task that appears difficult or unpleasant, postpone starting it and turn to social media or another digital activity. The digital activity provides immediate stimulation or emotional relief, but the academic task remains incomplete. As the deadline approaches, the student may experience increased pressure and attempt to complete the task hurriedly. Repeated experiences of this nature may weaken productive study routines and make it more difficult for the student to develop consistent self-regulated learning behaviours.

Self-regulated learning is consequently central to the problem. Students who can effectively set goals, manage their study time, monitor their concentration and control digital interruptions may be better positioned to resist procrastination and maintain productive learning behaviour. Conversely, students with weak self-regulatory practices may find it more difficult to control digital distractions and initiate academic tasks promptly. Panadero (2017) notes that self-regulated learning encompasses processes through which students plan, monitor and regulate their learning. Where these processes are weak, students may struggle to maintain academic behaviour in environments characterized by competing demands for attention.

Evidence from Nigerian higher education also indicates that self-regulated learning deserves greater attention. Oladele (2024) examined factors predicting self-regulated learning among students in a Nigerian public university and highlighted the challenge students may experience in adapting to the self-directed learning demands of university education. This is important because Nigerian students, like university students elsewhere, are increasingly required to manage learning independently while navigating complex digital environments.

Despite the growing literature on procrastination, smartphone use and self-regulated learning, there remains a need for context-specific investigation among students of individual Nigerian universities. Findings from universities in other countries cannot automatically be generalized to UNIBEN because students’ academic experiences, institutional environments, social expectations, technological access and patterns of digital engagement may differ. Even studies conducted in other Nigerian universities may not fully explain the behavioural patterns of students at the University of Benin.

A further problem is that academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning are often examined separately. Studying procrastination without considering digital distraction may overlook an important contemporary source of delay. Similarly, studying digital distraction without considering self-regulated learning may portray students merely as passive victims of technology rather than individuals who possess varying abilities to regulate their attention and behaviour. Examining the three variables together may therefore offer a more complete explanation of students’ academic behaviour.

There is also a danger of assuming that all digital technology use is academically harmful. Such an assumption would be inappropriate because students use smartphones and other devices for legitimate educational purposes. Digital resources can facilitate access to journals, electronic books, lecture materials, academic communication and collaborative learning. Bjerre-Nielsen et al. (2020) further demonstrate that relationships between smartphone use and academic performance can be affected by individual and course characteristics. The problem is therefore more specifically concerned with digital distraction—the extent to which digital activities divert students from intended academic tasks—rather than technology use in general.

At the University of Benin, there is consequently a need for empirical evidence concerning how students manage academic responsibilities within a digitally connected learning environment. Questions arise as to whether students who experience greater digital distraction also report higher levels of academic procrastination; whether students with stronger self-regulated learning practices are less vulnerable to procrastination; and whether students’ ability to regulate their learning can help them manage digital distractions more effectively.

The absence of sufficient institution-specific evidence makes it difficult for lecturers, counsellors, student-support personnel and university administrators to develop interventions based on the actual behavioural experiences of students. Without understanding the interaction between procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning, efforts to improve students’ academic engagement may focus on only one dimension of the problem.

It is against this background that this study investigates academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning among university students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). The study is expected to provide empirical evidence on the prevalence and patterns of these behaviours and their relationships, thereby contributing to the development of more appropriate academic support and digital-learning strategies for university students.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the relationship among academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning among university students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

1.3.1 Specific Objectives

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the level of academic procrastination among students of the University of Benin;
  2. identify the major forms of digital distraction experienced by students of the University of Benin;
  3. assess the level of self-regulated learning among students of the University of Benin;
  4. determine the relationship between digital distraction and academic procrastination among UNIBEN students.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What is the level of academic procrastination among students of the University of Benin?
  2. What are the major forms of digital distraction experienced by students of the University of Benin?
  3. What is the level of self-regulated learning among students of the University of Benin?
  4. What relationship exists between digital distraction and academic procrastination among UNIBEN students?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship among academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning among students of the University of Benin.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to university students, lecturers, counsellors, university administrators, educational policymakers, parents and guardians, researchers and other stakeholders in higher education.

Students

The study may help students understand how procrastination and uncontrolled digital engagement can interfere with academic activities. Awareness of the relationship between digital distraction and self-regulated learning may encourage students to develop practical strategies for managing their attention, time and technology use. Such strategies may include establishing study schedules, reducing unnecessary notifications, setting academic priorities and monitoring personal study behaviour.

Lecturers

The findings may help lecturers better understand some behavioural factors affecting students’ academic engagement. Lecturers may use the findings to incorporate time-management, study-skills and digital-learning guidance into their interactions with students. They may also design learning activities that encourage active participation and sustained engagement.

University Counsellors and Student Support Personnel

The study may provide useful information for counselling interventions addressing procrastination, poor study habits, attention difficulties and problematic digital behaviour. Counsellors may use the findings as a basis for developing workshops and individual interventions focused on self-regulation, goal-setting and academic time management.

University Management

The findings may assist university administrators in understanding emerging challenges associated with students’ use of digital technologies. Rather than treating technology solely as a problem, management may develop balanced digital-wellbeing and academic-support initiatives that encourage responsible technology use while preserving its educational benefits.

Educational Policymakers

The study may contribute to discussions about digital literacy and student wellbeing in Nigerian higher education. Policymakers may find the evidence useful when designing policies concerning responsible digital technology use, student support services and technology-enhanced learning.

Parents and Guardians

Although university students are expected to exercise greater independence, parents and guardians may benefit from understanding the academic challenges associated with excessive digital engagement and procrastination. The findings may encourage more constructive forms of support that promote students’ independence and self-management.

Researchers

The study may contribute to existing literature on academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning. It may also provide a basis for future studies involving other Nigerian universities, different categories of students or additional variables such as academic motivation, self-efficacy, anxiety, social media use and academic performance.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning among university students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Conceptually, the study covers three major variables. Academic procrastination will focus on behaviours involving the delay of academic activities such as studying, completing assignments, preparing for examinations and undertaking academic projects. Digital distraction will focus on the extent to which smartphones, social media, instant messaging, online entertainment, notifications, video platforms, gaming and other non-academic digital activities divert students’ attention from academic tasks. Self-regulated learning will cover students’ abilities relating to goal-setting, planning, time management, self-monitoring, self-control, strategy use and evaluation of learning activities.

Geographically, the study is restricted to students of the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The University of Benin is a government-owned Nigerian university established in 1970, with teaching and research at the centre of its institutional mission.

The study is concerned primarily with students’ reported academic behaviours and does not attempt to evaluate the entire academic performance of the university. It also does not treat general internet use or smartphone ownership as inherently problematic; rather, attention is given to digital activities that interfere with intended academic tasks.

1.8 Delimitation of the Study

The study is delimited to university students at the University of Benin and does not include students from other universities in Edo State or Nigeria. The study focuses specifically on academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning. Other factors that may influence academic behaviour—such as socioeconomic background, family structure, personality traits, mental health, lecturer characteristics, academic workload and institutional resources—are outside the primary scope of the study except where they are relevant to the interpretation of findings.

The study also focuses on students’ academic behaviour rather than making clinical diagnoses of problematic smartphone use or other forms of behavioural addiction. Digital distraction is considered from an educational and behavioural perspective.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Academic Procrastination

Academic procrastination refers to the voluntary and unnecessary postponement of intended academic activities such as reading, assignments, projects, examination preparation or research work despite awareness that the delay may produce negative academic consequences.

Digital Distraction

Digital distraction refers to the diversion of students’ attention from intended academic activities toward non-academic digital activities or interruptions, including social media, instant messaging, entertainment videos, online gaming, unnecessary browsing and digital notifications.

Self-Regulated Learning

Self-regulated learning refers to students’ ability to actively plan, organize, monitor, control and evaluate their learning activities in order to achieve academic goals.

University Students

University students refer to individuals formally enrolled in undergraduate programmes at the University of Benin during the period of the study.

Digital Technology

Digital technology refers to electronic technologies and platforms used by students to access, create, communicate or exchange information, including smartphones, computers, tablets, internet platforms and applications.

Smartphone Use

Smartphone use refers to students’ engagement with smartphone devices for academic, communication, social, entertainment and other activities.

Academic Task

An academic task refers to an activity undertaken by a student for educational purposes, including attending lectures, studying, reading, completing assignments, conducting research, preparing for tests and participating in academic projects.

Self-Control

Self-control refers to the capacity of a student to regulate impulses, attention and behaviour in order to remain focused on intended academic goals despite competing attractions or distractions.

Study Behaviour

Study behaviour refers to the patterns of actions and habits through which students organize and conduct their academic learning activities.

1.10 Organization of the Study

The study will be organized into five chapters.

Chapter One presents the introduction, background to the study, statement of the problem, aim and objectives, research questions, research hypothesis, significance of the study, scope, delimitation, operational definitions and organization of the study.

Chapter Two will review relevant literature on academic procrastination, digital distraction and self-regulated learning. It will examine conceptual literature, theoretical perspectives and empirical studies relevant to the subject.

Chapter Three will present the methodology of the study, including research design, study area, population, sample size, sampling procedure, research instrument, validity and reliability, method of data collection and techniques for data analysis.

Chapter Four will present and analyze the data collected from respondents. The research questions will be answered and the hypothesis will be tested using appropriate statistical procedures.

Chapter Five will provide the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations. It will also identify areas for further research.
