INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The Lagos Eko Secondary Education Project identified five special schools and seven inclusive schools and reported support for specialised educational materials, software, teacher training and other resources intended to facilitate teaching and learning for students with disabilities. Earlier research conducted in Lagos State also examined the audiological profile of hearing-impaired pupils enrolled in designated inclusive schools, demonstrating that hearing impairment is an established educational concern within the state’s school system. More broadly, UNICEF emphasises that children with disabilities frequently encounter barriers to education and that assistive technologies, including hearing aids and other communication-support technologies, can help children with disabilities participate in learning and social life (Lagos Eko Project, 2012; Asoegwu, Ogban, & Nwawolo, 2019; UNICEF, 2024).

The effectiveness of assistive technology may depend on availability, appropriateness, reliability, teacher competence, student familiarity, maintenance, electricity and infrastructure, communication practices and the extent to which technology is integrated into classroom instruction. Evidence from Nigerian research indicates that inadequate teacher training and infrastructure can constrain the use of assistive technology, while international evidence similarly identifies teacher preparation and accessibility as important barriers. Therefore, examining the relationship between assistive technology and classroom participation requires attention not only to whether technologies are available but also to their use in actual teaching and learning situations. This study consequently focuses on selected special schools in Lagos State to assess how assistive technologies such as hearing devices, captioning and visual communication technologies, digital learning technologies, and classroom communication systems relate to the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment (Fernández-Batanero et al., 2022; Ogunwale et al., 2025; WHO, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Students with hearing impairment have the same right to education and participation as other learners, but their ability to participate meaningfully in classroom activities can be affected by communication barriers. Traditional classroom instruction frequently relies on spoken explanations, oral questioning, auditory instructions and spontaneous teacher–student interaction. Where students cannot adequately access such information, they may experience difficulties following lessons, answering questions, contributing to discussions and interacting with classmates. The United Nations recognises the need for reasonable accommodation, individualised support and appropriate communication modes for students with disabilities, while the WHO identifies timely hearing interventions and assistive technologies as important means of supporting educational participation among children with hearing loss (United Nations, 2006; WHO, 2026).

Thus, the mere presence of assistive technology in a school may not necessarily translate into effective classroom use or improved participation (Fernández-Batanero et al., 2022; NOJEST, 2026).

Another problem is that students with hearing impairment may continue to experience low levels of classroom engagement even where some forms of technological or educational support are available. Classroom participation involves more than hearing the teacher; it includes asking and answering questions, contributing to discussions, working with peers, completing learning tasks and interacting with teachers. Finally, there is a contextual research gap concerning selected special schools in Lagos State. Existing research has examined hearing impairment and inclusive education in Lagos, while other Nigerian studies have investigated assistive technology and students with hearing impairment in other locations such as Ibadan. Ogunwale et al. (2025), for example, found significant relationships between assistive technology, inclusive classroom management and students’ academic engagement in Ibadan, while Asoegwu et al. (2019) documented the audiological characteristics of hearing-impaired pupils in Lagos inclusive schools. However, there remains a need for more specific evidence on how different forms of assistive technology influence the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State. The absence of such context-specific evidence makes it difficult to determine which technological supports are most relevant to students’ participation in classroom activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the relationship between assistive technology and classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State (Asoegwu et al., 2019; Ogunwale et al., 2025).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine the relationship between assistive technology and classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the influence of hearing assistive devices on the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State;
  2. determine the influence of captioning and visual communication technologies on the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State;
  3. assess the influence of digital learning and communication technologies on the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State; and
  4. examine the influence of classroom communication support technologies on the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  2. To what extent do captioning and visual communication technologies influence the classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between assistive technology and classroom participation of students with hearing impairment in selected special schools in Lagos State.

Chapter Three will present the research methodology. It will discuss the research design, area of the study, population of the study, sample size and sampling technique, research instrument, validity and reliability of the instrument, method of data collection and method of data analysis.

Chapter Four will present the analysis and interpretation of data collected from respondents. The research questions will be answered and the hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance.

Chapter Five will present the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations. Suggestions for further studies will also be presented.
