Project – The Influence of Church-Based Discipleship on the Spiritual Growth of Christian Youths: A Study of Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, Taraba State.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Christian discipleship is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith because it involves teaching, training, mentoring, and guiding believers towards maturity in their relationship with Jesus Christ. The Christian understanding of discipleship is rooted in the command of Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19–20, where He instructed His followers to make disciples of all nations, baptise them, and teach them to observe His commandments. This instruction establishes discipleship as more than a programme of religious instruction; it is a continuous process through which believers learn Christian values, develop godly character, and apply biblical principles to their daily lives. Bonhoeffer (2001) emphasises the centrality of following Christ in the life of a disciple, presenting discipleship as a commitment that involves obedience, sacrifice, and the transformation of one’s life in accordance with the teachings of Jesus. Consequently, church-based discipleship provides an organised environment through which Christian youths can be nurtured in faith, guided in their spiritual development, and equipped to live according to Christian principles.
The church occupies an important position in the spiritual formation of Christian youths because it provides opportunities for biblical teaching, fellowship, worship, prayer, mentoring, and participation in Christian service. Through these activities, young people can acquire knowledge of Scripture, develop Christian convictions, and learn to make decisions consistent with their faith. The early Christian community described in Acts 2:42 demonstrated this pattern through devotion to apostolic teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Similarly, Ephesians 4:11–16 explains the importance of equipping believers for service and promoting maturity in the body of Christ. Willard (2002) argues that spiritual formation requires intentional practices that shape the inner life and outward conduct of individuals. From this perspective, church-based discipleship is an essential means through which congregations can support the spiritual growth of young people by creating opportunities for instruction, accountability, service, and Christian fellowship.
Spiritual growth refers to the gradual development of a believer’s relationship with God, understanding of Scripture, Christian character, prayer life, moral conduct, and commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ. It involves more than regular church attendance or familiarity with religious language; rather, it is reflected in increasing faith, love, self-control, humility, obedience, and concern for others. Galatians 5:22–23 identifies the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, while Colossians 1:9–10 connects spiritual understanding with a life that pleases God and produces good works. Foster (1998) explains that spiritual disciplines, including prayer, meditation, study, worship, and service, can contribute to the development of Christian character when practised with sincerity and purpose. Therefore, the spiritual growth of Christian youths can be understood through observable patterns of faith, biblical understanding, personal devotion, moral responsibility, and participation in the life of the church.
Christian youths occupy a significant position in the present and future development of the church because they represent a generation that requires spiritual guidance, sound biblical teaching, and opportunities for responsible participation in Christian ministry. During youth, individuals encounter important questions concerning identity, relationships, personal values, education, employment, and future aspirations. These experiences can influence how they understand and practise their faith. Smith and Denton (2005), in their study of American teenagers, demonstrate the importance of examining the religious beliefs and practices of young people within their wider social and personal experiences. Although their findings arose from a different national context, their work highlights the need to understand youth spirituality as a developmental process shaped by religious communities, families, peers, and individual experiences. In the Nigerian church context, youth discipleship therefore requires deliberate attention to the spiritual questions and practical challenges young people encounter, while providing biblical guidance that enables them to develop a stable and meaningful Christian identity.
Church-based discipleship can influence the spiritual growth of youths through structured Bible study, small-group discussions, youth fellowships, prayer meetings, leadership training, pastoral counselling, and personal mentoring. These activities can help young people understand Christian teachings, ask questions about difficult issues, receive guidance from mature believers, and develop habits that sustain their faith. Research on youth ministry emphasises the significance of relationships, participation, and supportive faith communities in the religious development of young people. Root (2007) highlights the importance of relational ministry and the role of authentic relationships in Christian youth work. In a similar direction, Dean (2010) argues that youth ministry should take the spiritual formation of young people seriously rather than reduce ministry to entertainment or activities designed merely to attract attendance. These perspectives suggest that discipleship is likely to be more meaningful when it combines sound biblical teaching with personal relationships, practical Christian service, and opportunities for youths to exercise their faith in everyday life.
Despite the potential benefits of church-based discipleship, its effectiveness may be influenced by the quality of teaching, commitment of leaders, availability of learning materials, consistency of meetings, and willingness of youths to participate. Where discipleship programmes lack clear objectives, trained mentors, appropriate teaching methods, or regular follow-up, young people may find it difficult to translate biblical knowledge into consistent Christian conduct. Conversely, programmes that encourage questions, provide individual guidance, promote fellowship, and create opportunities for service may offer stronger support for spiritual development. Westerhoff (1976) explains that Christian faith is nurtured through the life and practices of a community, suggesting that spiritual formation involves participation in a faith community rather than instruction alone. Therefore, examining church-based discipleship requires attention not only to the existence of programmes but also to their content, delivery, accessibility, and perceived contribution to the spiritual lives of participants.
Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, Taraba State, provides the institutional setting for examining the influence of church-based discipleship on the spiritual growth of Christian youths. As a study of a specific church district, the research provides an opportunity to investigate how discipleship activities are organised, the extent to which Christian youths participate in them, and how participants perceive their contribution to prayer, biblical understanding, moral conduct, fellowship, and commitment to Christian service. However, the particular strengths, limitations, and outcomes of discipleship within this district should be established through empirical investigation rather than assumed in advance. By gathering information from Christian youths and, where appropriate, church leaders, the study can assess the relationship between participation in discipleship activities and indicators of spiritual growth within the selected setting. The findings may provide useful information for improving youth ministry, strengthening mentoring relationships, and developing discipleship programmes that respond more effectively to the spiritual needs of young people in Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, Taraba State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Christian discipleship is expected to play a vital role in helping young believers develop spiritual maturity, biblical understanding, Christian character, and commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ. However, the existence of discipleship programmes within a church does not automatically guarantee that every participating youth will experience meaningful spiritual growth. The effectiveness of such programmes may depend on the consistency of biblical instruction, the commitment of discipleship leaders, the quality of mentoring relationships, and the willingness of young people to apply what they learn. Dean (2010) cautions against youth ministry that concentrates on attracting young people without adequately addressing the depth and authenticity of their Christian faith. This raises the need to investigate whether church-based discipleship at Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, is perceived by Christian youths as contributing meaningfully to their spiritual development.
Another problem concerns the relationship between participation in church activities and the development of personal spiritual disciplines. Christian youths may attend worship services, youth fellowships, Bible studies, and prayer meetings without necessarily developing consistent personal prayer habits, regular Bible study, or a deeper understanding of Christian teachings. Foster (1998) explains that spiritual disciplines are practices through which believers cultivate their relationship with God and develop their inner lives. Nevertheless, the extent to which structured discipleship activities encourage these personal practices among youths in Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, requires investigation. Without examining this relationship, church leaders may find it difficult to determine whether existing discipleship activities are adequately supporting the personal spiritual lives of young people.
Furthermore, Christian youths encounter social, educational, economic, relational, and moral pressures that may influence their commitment to Christian values. These pressures can create difficulties in maintaining consistent religious participation, making morally responsible decisions, and sustaining a strong Christian identity. Smith and Denton (2005) demonstrate that the religious lives of young people must be understood within the wider social and personal environments in which they develop. Similarly, Root (2007) emphasises the importance of authentic relationships in youth ministry. These perspectives suggest that effective discipleship may require more than classroom-style religious instruction; it may also involve mentoring, counselling, supportive fellowship, and opportunities for young people to discuss their concerns. The extent to which such support is available and effective within Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, remains an empirical question.
The central problem addressed by this study is the need for context-specific evidence concerning the influence of church-based discipleship on the spiritual growth of Christian youths in Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, Taraba State. Although Christian teaching recognises discipleship as an important means of nurturing believers, the particular contribution of the district’s discipleship activities to biblical understanding, personal devotion, Christian character, and commitment to church participation should not be assumed without investigation. The study therefore seeks to examine the discipleship practices available to youths, assess their participation, identify factors that may limit their effectiveness, and determine how participation relates to perceived spiritual growth. The findings are expected to provide an evidence-based foundation for recommendations aimed at strengthening youth discipleship within the selected church district.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the influence of church-based discipleship on the spiritual growth of Christian youths in Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District, Taraba State. Its geographical scope is limited to the selected church district, while its subject scope covers the nature of discipleship activities, youths’ participation, the perceived influence of discipleship on spiritual growth, and the challenges affecting programme effectiveness.
The study will consider spiritual growth in terms of biblical understanding, personal prayer life, Christian character, and commitment to church activities and Christian service. Church-based discipleship activities may include Bible study, prayer meetings, youth fellowship, mentoring, leadership training, and other organised forms of Christian instruction.
The study will focus on Christian youths associated with the selected district and, where appropriate, obtain supplementary information from relevant church leaders or discipleship coordinators. The age range, sample size, and specific congregations to be included should be determined according to the institution’s research requirements and the actual youth membership of the district.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may encounter limitations relating to respondents’ willingness to provide accurate information about their participation in discipleship and personal spiritual lives. Some respondents may provide answers they consider socially or religiously acceptable rather than descriptions of their actual experiences.
Another possible limitation is the restriction of the research to one church district. Consequently, the findings may not represent the experiences of Christian youths in every church or denomination in Taraba State or Nigeria generally.
Time and financial constraints may also affect the number of respondents reached and the depth of data collection. To minimise these limitations, the researcher should use clear research instruments, protect respondents’ confidentiality, encourage honest responses, and apply appropriate methods of data analysis. Since the study is observational unless an experimental design is adopted, any statistical relationship identified should be interpreted as an association rather than automatic proof of causation.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Church-based discipleship: Organised activities and relationships provided by a local church to teach, mentor, guide, and equip believers to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. In this study, it includes Bible study, prayer meetings, youth fellowship, mentoring, and related programmes in Faith Way Gospel Ministries, Wukari District.
Spiritual growth: The development of a believer’s faith, biblical understanding, prayer life, Christian character, moral conduct, and commitment to Christian service. It will be assessed through respondents’ reported experiences and relevant indicators included in the research instrument.
