ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine The Effects of ASUU strike on University Students using Imo State University as a case study. The study was carried out to ascertain the extent to which strike action influences the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Identify the causes of strike action by the various unions in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, find out the implications of strike action in the Nigerian tertiary system, Suggest possible solution to the incessant strike action in our tertiary institutions. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of University students. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected respondents were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool.The result of the findings reveals that the extent to which strike action influences the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria is high. The study also revealed that the implications of strike action in the Nigerian tertiary system includes: disruption of academic calendar, closure of all forms of classes and lectures, delay in students academic progress and graduation, poor performance of students, low productivity by workers. Therefore, it is recommended that government should provide adequate funding to the various tertiary institutions in the country. And autonomy should be granted to the various tertiary institutions in the country. T
