INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background to the Study

HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health issue, particularly among young people. The transmission of HIV among adolescents is influenced not only by their behavior but also by their attitudes towards the disease. Counseling has emerged as a pivotal strategy in addressing misconceptions and improving attitudes toward HIV/AIDS among secondary school students. This review examines various studies that highlight the effectiveness of counseling interventions in shaping positive attitudes toward HIV/AIDS among adolescents.

Research by Kumi-Kyereme et al. (2017) indicates that counseling significantly improves the knowledge and attitudes of secondary school students regarding HIV/AIDS. The study involved a quasi-experimental design where students received structured counseling sessions focusing on HIV transmission, prevention methods, and the stigma associated with the infection. Results showed a marked improvement in students’ knowledge and a reduction in negative attitudes toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS, underscoring the importance of educational interventions in schools.

In addition to knowledge enhancement, counseling helps in addressing emotional and psychological barriers associated with HIV/AIDS. According to Ojo et al. (2019), group counseling sessions provide a safe space for students to express their fears and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS. The study found that peer-led counseling not only improved students’ attitudes but also fostered a sense of community and support among participants. The shared experiences during these sessions were instrumental in changing perspectives and reducing stigma related to the disease.

Moreover, the role of culturally relevant counseling is crucial in shaping attitudes towards HIV/AIDS. A study by Nyoni and Maphosa (2020) explored how culturally sensitive counseling approaches tailored to local beliefs and practices enhanced the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education in secondary schools. The findings indicated that when counseling is aligned with students’ cultural contexts, it leads to more significant shifts in attitudes and increased openness to discussing HIV/AIDS-related issues. This highlights the need for counselors to consider cultural nuances when developing and implementing interventions.

The influence of parental and community involvement in counseling interventions has also been examined. According to a study by Maphosa et al. (2021), involving parents in counseling sessions not only reinforced the knowledge gained by students but also helped mitigate stigma at home. This comprehensive approach not only educated students but also encouraged supportive home environments where discussions about HIV/AIDS were normalized. Such involvement has been shown to create a more conducive atmosphere for students to develop positive attitudes toward individuals affected by the disease.

Finally, long-term follow-up studies are essential to assess the sustained impact of counseling on students’ attitudes. A longitudinal study by Adetokunbo and Olawale (2022) indicated that while immediate improvements in knowledge and attitudes were evident post-counseling, continuous reinforcement through periodic counseling sessions was necessary to maintain positive changes. The study emphasizes the importance of ongoing support and education in schools to ensure that students retain their positive attitudes and remain informed about HIV/AIDS as they transition into adulthood.

The evidence suggests that counseling is an effective intervention for improving secondary school students’ attitudes toward HIV/AIDS. Through structured educational programs, culturally sensitive approaches, and involvement of parents and communities, counseling can significantly reduce stigma and misinformation surrounding the disease. Future research should focus on long-term outcomes and explore the integration of counseling programs into school curricula to promote a more informed and empathetic generation.

1.2.  Statement of the Problem

Sexual urges are inherent in all humans. This is because individuals are sexual beings from birth to death, and sexual development and behaviour are integral human processes.

Sexually transmitted diseases such as Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome (AIDs) has defied all aspects of remedy through medical sciences. The spread of the disease is very alarming in the larger society.

Regrettably, people who have been counselled by experts in counselling have not heeded to the advice given to them on how best to embark on safe sexual relationship. This is because, many people today especially students, have not changed their sex lives majority of the students, inspite of the information given to them on the dangers inherent in contacting HIV/AIDS, still believe that the fear in them to avoid sex.

Others believe that whether counselling or no counselling, they should engage in active sexual life and this is where the problem of continued spread of HIV/AIDS among students lies. Many people show negative attitude towards the use of counselling as an instrument of assistance for social, psychological and health problems. People who have contacted HIV/AIDS infections rather  have the problem of inhibition, fear and the negative mental orientation that make their cases worse and eventually result to their deaths.

Negative attitude to sex education and marital guidance by many people are the main causes of the wide spread of HIV/AIDS in the society. This study therefore investigates the effect of counselling on students attitudes towards HIV/AIDS with the view of changing students attitudes and behaviour through adequate counselling recommended in this study.

1.3. Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to examine the Effect of Counseling on Secondary School Students Attitudes Towards HIV/AID’S Infection. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the baseline attitudes of secondary school students towards HIV/AIDS infection.
2. To implement counseling sessions for a selected group of secondary school students.
3. To measure the changes in attitudes towards HIV/AIDS infection after the counseling sessions.
4. To analyze the effectiveness of counseling in improving students’ knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS. 

1.4.  Research Questions

The following research questions were raised in this study:

1. What are the baseline attitudes of secondary school students towards HIV/AIDS infection?
2. How do counseling sessions impact the attitudes of a selected group of secondary school students towards HIV/AIDS infection?
3. What changes are observed in attitudes towards HIV/AIDS infection after the counseling sessions?
4. How effective is counseling in improving students’ knowledge and awareness of HIV/AIDS?

1.5. Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses were formulated to guide the conduct of this study:

Ho: There is no significant effect of counselling on students’ attitude towards HIV/IDS infection.

H1: There is significant effect of counselling on students’ attitude towards HIV/IDS infection.

1.6.  Significance of Study

The significance of this study lies in its potential to address a critical public health challenge: the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS among adolescents. By exploring the effects of counseling on secondary school students’ attitudes, this research aims to provide valuable insights that can inform educational strategies and health policies. Understanding how counseling influences perceptions and behaviors toward HIV/AIDS can help mitigate stigma, promote safe practices, and enhance the overall well-being of young individuals in educational settings.

One of the primary contributions of this study is its focus on stigma reduction. Stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS often leads to discrimination and social isolation of those affected, creating barriers to testing and treatment. By demonstrating how counseling can foster more positive attitudes toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS, this research highlights the potential for counseling programs to serve as a transformative tool in changing societal perceptions. This is particularly significant in school environments, where adolescents form critical attitudes that can persist into adulthood.

Additionally, the study underscores the importance of evidence-based interventions in school curricula. Many educational institutions lack structured programs addressing HIV/AIDS, leaving students vulnerable to misinformation. By providing empirical data on the effectiveness of counseling, this research can advocate for the integration of comprehensive sexual health education into schools. This proactive approach can empower students with knowledge and skills, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

The findings of this study could also have implications for mental health support within educational settings. Adolescents grappling with anxiety or fear related to HIV/AIDS may benefit from counseling, which provides emotional support and coping strategies. By emphasizing the psychological benefits of counseling, the research can encourage schools to prioritize mental health resources, fostering a supportive environment that encourages open discussions about sensitive topics like HIV/AIDS.

Moreover, the significance of this study extends to community engagement and parental involvement. By recognizing the role of families and communities in shaping attitudes toward HIV/AIDS, the research advocates for collaborative approaches that include parents in counseling initiatives. Engaging families can help create a more supportive network for students, ultimately contributing to a more informed and empathetic society regarding HIV/AIDS issues.

This study will be of immense benefit to the following:

1. Students: Students will benefit from this study because its findings and recommendations will give them an insight into the problem of HIV/AIDS information and how to prevent the spread.
2. Parents:Parents will benefit from this study because it will help their children/wards in school to avail themselves of the opportunity to be aware of the spread of the deadly. Acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and how not to come in contact with it through the use of counselling. That is to say that parents will understand the importance of counselling through this study.
3. Teachers: Teachers will also benefit from this study because it will afford them the opportunity to use counselling method to help students. With this study teachers would appreciate the use of counselling teaching as a remedy to the spread of HIV/AIDS.
4. School Counsellors:They would benefit from recommendations of this study because it will help them to have more insight into the use of counselling to help students out of their sexual problems.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will cover the effect of counselling on students’ attitudes towards HIV/AIDS infection in Surulere local government area of Lagos State.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Operational definition of terms were carried out in this study thus:

1. HIV:This is a term that means Human Immuno Deficiency.
2. AIDS:This means Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
3. School Counsellors:School counsellors are counselling experts who are in the school environment in order to offer counselling and guidance services to students and others (Amanze, 1990).
4. Technique:According to Advanced Learners Dictionary, this means technical or mechanical skill in art, something of method of doing something expertly, method of artistic expression in music painting etc.
5. Attitude:This refers to manner of placing or holding the body, way of feeling, thinking or behaving.
6. Gender:This means grammatically grouping of words (norms and pronouns into classes (masculine, genuine and neutral).
7. Infection:Infecting or being infected; contacting a disease, especially by agency of the atmosphere or water, contagious disease, influence that infects.
