CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Church expansion has become a central objective of many contemporary Christian denominations, particularly within Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Expansion in this context refers not only to numerical increase in membership but also to geographical spread, infrastructural development, programme diversification, and socio-economic impact within communities. Among such denominations, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) stands out as one of the fastest-growing Christian organisations in Nigeria and globally, with parishes established across urban and rural areas as well as in over 190 countries (RCCG, 2022).

The rapid expansion of RCCG has been supported by a combination of spiritual emphasis, structured administration, leadership training, and effective mobilisation of financial resources. One of the most significant sources of these financial resources is monetary donations, which include tithes, offerings, seed faith giving, pledges, thanksgiving donations, and special project contributions. These donations constitute the financial backbone of RCCG’s operations and expansion strategies.

In the Nigerian context, churches increasingly assume responsibilities beyond spiritual matters, including education, healthcare, welfare services, youth empowerment, and community development. These responsibilities require substantial and consistent funding. For RCCG, monetary donations have enabled the establishment of new parishes, construction of worship centres, development of educational institutions, investment in media evangelism, and support for missionary activities (Adeboye, 2018). Large-scale projects such as the Redemption Camp and extensive missionary networks underscore the importance of financial inflows in sustaining church expansion.

Urbanisation and population growth, especially in major cities such as Lagos, have further intensified the need for church expansion. The high cost of land acquisition, building materials, and media engagement in urban centres places significant financial demands on churches. RCCG’s ability to expand rapidly within these environments suggests a strong relationship between monetary donations and church expansion outcomes. Donations facilitate strategic planning, timely project execution, and the provision of facilities that attract and retain members.

Despite the visible expansion of RCCG, concerns have emerged regarding the sustainability, accountability, and equitable distribution of monetary donations. Critics argue that excessive emphasis on fundraising may overshadow spiritual objectives, while others contend that effective financial mobilisation is essential for fulfilling the church’s mission in a complex socio-economic environment. These contrasting perspectives highlight the need for scholarly investigation into how monetary donations actually influence church expansion within RCCG.

Although numerous studies have examined leadership style, evangelism strategies, and organisational structure as drivers of church growth, limited empirical attention has been given to the specific role of monetary donations in facilitating expansion within Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of monetary donations on church expansion, using RCCG as a case study.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The expansion of churches in Nigeria has been uneven, with some denominations experiencing rapid growth while others struggle to establish and sustain new parishes. Even within RCCG, variations exist in the rate of expansion among provinces, zones, and parishes. While RCCG is widely recognised for its extensive spread and infrastructural development, the extent to which monetary donations directly influence this expansion remains insufficiently understood.

Many RCCG parishes depend heavily on donations from members to fund building projects, missionary work, media outreach, and welfare programmes. However, fluctuations in donation levels—often influenced by economic instability, unemployment, and inflation—pose significant challenges to sustained expansion. Some parishes experience delayed projects, inadequate facilities, and limited outreach capacity due to insufficient financial resources, despite strong membership commitment.

Furthermore, increasing public scrutiny regarding church finances has raised concerns about transparency and accountability in the management of monetary donations. Allegations of mismanagement or overemphasis on fundraising can discourage members from giving, thereby affecting the church’s ability to expand. This situation creates tension between financial mobilisation and spiritual credibility, which may influence both donor behaviour and expansion outcomes.

Despite the centrality of monetary donations to RCCG’s operations, there is a lack of empirical research systematically examining their effect on church expansion. Without clear evidence, church administrators may struggle to design effective financial strategies that balance spiritual values with organisational growth objectives. Therefore, the problem addressed by this study is the limited empirical understanding of how monetary donations affect church expansion within RCCG, particularly in the Nigerian context.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine the effect of monetary donations on church expansion in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

The specific objectives are to:

1. identify the major sources and forms of monetary donations in RCCG;

2. examine the relationship between monetary donations and the establishment of new RCCG parishes;

3. assess the influence of monetary donations on infrastructural development within RCCG;

4. evaluate the effect of monetary donations on missionary and evangelistic expansion.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the major sources of monetary donations in RCCG?

2. How do monetary donations influence the establishment of new RCCG parishes?

3. To what extent do monetary donations contribute to infrastructural development in RCCG?

4. How do monetary donations affect missionary and evangelistic expansion within RCCG?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will be guided by the following hypothesis:

• H₀₁: Monetary donations have no significant effect on church expansion in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be useful to RCCG leadership and administrators by providing empirical insights into the role of monetary donations in church expansion. It will assist in developing transparent and sustainable financial strategies that support long-term expansion.

The study will also benefit church members and donors by improving understanding of how their contributions are utilised in advancing the mission of the church. Additionally, the study will contribute to academic literature on religion, finance, and organisational growth in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected RCCG parishes within Nigeria. It examines the effect of monetary donations on church expansion in terms of parish establishment, infrastructural development, and missionary activities. The study does not extend to other denominations or RCCG parishes outside Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Monetary Donations: Financial contributions made by church members and supporters, including tithes, offerings, and special donations.

• Church Expansion: The growth of the church in terms of geographical spread, infrastructural development, and outreach activities.

• RCCG: The Redeemed Christian Church of God, a Pentecostal Christian denomination founded in Nigeria.

• Missionary Activities: Evangelistic efforts aimed at spreading the Christian faith and establishing new churches.
