CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Poverty remains a pressing socio-economic challenge in Nigeria, affecting millions of households and limiting access to essential services, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. According to the National Bureau of Statistics(2023), a significant proportion of the Nigerian population lives below the national poverty line, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas where informal employment and low-income occupations are prevalent. This has necessitated multi-sectoral interventions to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods.

Religious organizations, particularly Christian churches, have increasingly played an active role in addressing socio-economic challenges through church welfare programs. These programs are designed to provide financial assistance, food support, skill acquisition training, scholarships, healthcare services, and small-scale business support to members and vulnerable communities (Obi & Akinyemi, 2020). By leveraging congregational resources, churches aim to complement government efforts in poverty alleviation while fostering social cohesion and moral development.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in Nigeria and has a strong presence in urban centers such as Ibadan, Oyo State. Beyond spiritual activities, the RCCG has established welfare-oriented programs aimed at assisting economically disadvantaged members. These programs include micro-loans, educational grants, free healthcare outreach, provision of foodstuffs, and vocational training initiatives. The church’s welfare interventions are informed by biblical principles of charity, compassion, and stewardship (Luke 3:11; Acts 4:32–35), which emphasize supporting the less privileged and promoting communal well-being.

The increasing involvement of churches in poverty reduction aligns with global development objectives, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1: No Poverty, and Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Faith-based organizations are recognized for their capacity to reach marginalized populations, mobilize local resources, and provide culturally acceptable interventions (United Nations Development Programme, 2021).

Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, represents a critical context for examining church welfare programs due to its high population density, socio-economic disparities, and concentration of urban and peri-urban poor households. While the RCCG has a broad membership base in the city, there is limited empirical evidence evaluating the effectiveness of its welfare programs in reducing poverty, promoting economic self-reliance, and improving living standards among members.

Understanding the impact of church welfare programs is essential for several reasons. First, it provides insights into the role of religious institutions in socio-economic development. Second, it informs policy discussions on leveraging faith-based organizations for poverty alleviation. Third, it identifies gaps and challenges in program implementation, thereby guiding strategies for more effective interventions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite Nigeria’s economic growth over the past decades, poverty remains pervasive, particularly in urban centers such as Ibadan. Many households struggle with unemployment, irregular income, and limited access to social services. While government social welfare programs exist, they are often constrained by inadequate funding, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and limited reach.

Churches, especially large Pentecostal organizations like the RCCG, have stepped in to provide welfare programs to support economically disadvantaged members. These programs aim to reduce immediate hardship, promote self-reliance, and encourage sustainable livelihoods. However, there is limited empirical research evaluating the actual impact of church welfare programs on poverty reduction among members in Ibadan.

It is unclear whether church interventions significantly improve members’ income levels, enhance access to education or healthcare, or promote sustainable economic activities. Challenges such as resource limitations, inconsistent program implementation, lack of monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and dependency concerns may affect the effectiveness of church welfare programs.

The absence of data-driven insights hinders policymakers, church administrators, and development agencies from understanding the potential of faith-based welfare programs in complementing broader poverty alleviation efforts. Consequently, there is a need to systematically investigate the impact of RCCG welfare programs on poverty reduction among its members in selected parishes of Ibadan.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of church welfare programs on poverty reduction among members of selected RCCG parishes in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the types of welfare programs provided by RCCG parishes in Ibadan.

2. Evaluate the level of participation of members in church welfare programs.

3. Assess the impact of church welfare programs on members’ income, livelihood, and living standards.

4. Identify challenges affecting the implementation and effectiveness of church welfare programs.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What types of welfare programs are offered by RCCG parishes in Ibadan?

2. What is the level of participation of members in these welfare programs?

3. How do church welfare programs influence members’ income, livelihoods, and living standards?

4. What challenges affect the implementation and effectiveness of church welfare programs?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: Church welfare programs have no significant impact on poverty reduction among members of RCCG parishes in Ibadan, Oyo State.

H₁: Church welfare programs have a significant impact on poverty reduction among members of RCCG parishes in Ibadan, Oyo State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will benefit RCCG church leaders by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of welfare programs in alleviating poverty among members. It will help in improving program design, targeting, and sustainability.

Policymakers, development partners, and NGOs can use the findings to collaborate with faith-based organizations in poverty reduction strategies. Academically, the study contributes to literature on the role of religious institutions in socio-economic development, faith-based welfare initiatives, and poverty alleviation strategies in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected parishes of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Ibadan, Oyo State. It examines welfare programs such as financial aid, vocational training, educational support, and health outreach, and evaluates their impact on members’ poverty levels. The study is limited to church members and does not include other denominations or government social welfare programs.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Church Welfare Programs: Organized initiatives by churches to provide material, financial, or skill-based support to members and vulnerable individuals.

Poverty Reduction: Improvement in income, access to basic services, and overall living conditions that reduce economic deprivation.

Members: Individuals officially affiliated with the selected RCCG parishes in Ibadan.

Impact: The measurable effect of church welfare programs on members’ socio-economic well-being.
