CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

Marriage is a central institution in human society, encompassing legal, social, spiritual, and cultural dimensions. It is a union between individuals that often establishes the foundation for family, community cohesion, and social stability (Amato, 2000). However, marriages are subject to multiple challenges, including communication breakdowns, conflicting expectations, cultural differences, financial stress, and poor conflict resolution skills. These challenges can lead to marital dissatisfaction, instability, or even dissolution (Gottman & Levenson, 2000).

In Nigeria, different forms of pre-marital counseling are employed to prepare couples for marriage. Two prominent approaches are traditional pre-marital counseling, rooted in cultural practices, and church-based pre-marital counseling, which integrates religious instruction, spiritual guidance, and structured relational skills training. Traditional counseling often focuses on the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of spouses within the cultural context, sometimes including advice from elders, rites, and family mediation. Church-based counseling, particularly within Christian congregations, emphasizes theological understanding, moral preparation, communication skills, and conflict management (Nwankwo, 2015).

While both approaches aim to strengthen marital unions, their effectiveness in fostering successful marriages — defined by satisfaction, stability, and harmonious family life — may differ due to variations in content, methodology, duration, and contextual relevance. This study investigates the effectiveness of traditional versus church-based pre-marital counseling on the success of marital unions in selected churches in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is influenced by both cultural and religious institutions, which shape expectations, roles, and responsibilities of spouses. In Nigeria, many couples are exposed to dual counseling systems before marriage. Traditional counseling typically involves guidance from family elders, community leaders, or extended family members and is aimed at transmitting cultural norms and ensuring compliance with community expectations. Such counseling emphasizes familial obligations, gender roles, and conflict resolution according to cultural customs (Obi, 2017).

Church-based pre-marital counseling, on the other hand, is conducted by trained pastoral staff, religious educators, or counselors within churches. These programs usually cover topics such as communication, conflict resolution, financial management, sexual ethics, family planning, and spiritual readiness for marriage (Ogbu, 2017). Church counseling aims not only at imparting practical skills but also at instilling a spiritual understanding of marriage as a covenant before God.

Studies have indicated that pre-marital counseling can reduce marital discord and increase marital satisfaction by equipping couples with the skills to manage disagreements, communicate effectively, and navigate life challenges together (Halford, Markman & Stanley, 2008; Hawkins et al., 2004). However, the majority of these studies focus on either traditional or church-based counseling independently, with little research comparing their relative effectiveness. Understanding the comparative strengths of these two counseling approaches is essential for families, religious leaders, and policy makers seeking to improve marital outcomes.

In Jos South, a culturally diverse region with a mix of Christian, traditional, and hybrid practices, couples may participate in either traditional counseling, church-based counseling, or both. Yet, there is limited empirical evidence to determine which method contributes more significantly to marital success in this context. Identifying the effectiveness of these approaches can inform counseling practices, guide community and church interventions, and provide couples with insights into the preparation strategies that best support long-term marital satisfaction.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite widespread pre-marital counseling practices, marital instability and divorce remain prevalent in Nigeria. Many couples continue to face challenges in communication, conflict resolution, and role adjustment, regardless of whether they participated in traditional or church-based counseling. Some couples rely exclusively on traditional methods, while others engage in religious programs, yet it remains unclear which approach is more effective in promoting marital success.

Existing studies have mainly explored either traditional or church-based counseling, with little research examining their comparative effectiveness, particularly in Jos South, where both counseling forms coexist. Without empirical evidence, couples and counseling facilitators may be unable to determine the most beneficial preparation strategy for marriage. Consequently, there is a need for a study that assesses the effectiveness of traditional versus church-based pre-marital counseling on the success of marital unions in this context.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of traditional versus church-based pre-marital counseling on the success of marital unions in selected churches in Jos South.

The specific objectives are:

1. To evaluate the level of marital satisfaction among couples who received traditional pre-marital counseling.
2. To examine the level of marital satisfaction among couples who received church-based pre-marital counseling.
3. To compare conflict resolution skills among couples exposed to traditional versus church-based counseling.
4. To compare communication effectiveness among couples exposed to traditional versus church-based counseling.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the level of marital satisfaction among couples who received traditional pre-marital counseling?
2. What is the level of marital satisfaction among couples who received church-based pre-marital counseling?
3. How do conflict resolution skills differ between couples exposed to traditional versus church-based counseling?
4. How does communication effectiveness differ between couples exposed to traditional versus church-based counseling?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant difference in the effectiveness of traditional versus church-based pre-marital counseling on the success of marital unions among couples in selected churches in Jos South.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant to:

• Couples: Provide insights into the most effective counseling approach to prepare for marriage and promote long-term marital satisfaction.
• Church and Community Leaders: Inform design and implementation of pre-marital counseling programs that integrate cultural and spiritual practices effectively.
• Policy Makers and Family Counselors: Offer empirical evidence to guide interventions aimed at reducing marital instability and promoting family cohesion.
• Academia: Contribute to literature on pre-marital counseling and marital success in Nigerian sociocultural contexts.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on couples married within the last five years who attended selected churches in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. Both traditional and church-based pre-marital counseling experiences are considered, along with their influence on marital satisfaction, conflict resolution, and communication. Other forms of counseling outside the church or traditional family systems are excluded.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Traditional Pre-Marital Counseling: Guidance and instruction provided to prospective couples by elders, family members, or community leaders rooted in cultural practices.
• Church-Based Pre-Marital Counseling: Structured programs conducted by church officials or pastoral counselors to prepare couples spiritually, emotionally, and relationally for marriage.
• Marital Success: A measure of relationship satisfaction, stability, communication, and effective conflict management within a marriage.
• Conflict Resolution: The ability to handle disagreements constructively without escalating disputes.
• Communication Effectiveness: The ability of couples to express needs, emotions, and expectations clearly and empathetically.
