INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Health is a fundamental component of human development and societal progress. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. Achieving this holistic concept of health requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including government institutions, private organizations, and increasingly, religious bodies. In many developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, religious institutions play a significant role in shaping health behaviors, providing care, and promoting well-being.

In Nigeria, religion occupies a central position in the lives of individuals and communities. Among the various religious groups, Pentecostal churches have experienced rapid growth and influence over the past few decades. Pentecostalism emphasizes spiritual experiences, divine healing, miracles, and the active role of the Holy Spirit in everyday life. As a result, these churches have become not only centers of worship but also hubs for social support, counseling, and community development.

The involvement of religious institutions in healthcare is not a new phenomenon. Historically, faith-based organizations have been instrumental in the establishment of hospitals, clinics, and missionary health services across Africa. In Nigeria, Christian missions were among the earliest providers of Western medical care, laying the foundation for modern healthcare systems. Today, Pentecostal churches continue this legacy in various forms, including organizing medical outreaches, supporting healthcare initiatives, and promoting health awareness among their members.

In Lagos State, which is Nigeria’s commercial hub and one of the most populous cities in Africa, Pentecostal churches are highly visible and influential. Churches such as The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Living Faith Church Worldwide, and Christ Embassy have millions of followers and extensive organizational structures that enable them to undertake large-scale social and health-related programs. These churches often organize free medical missions, health screenings, blood donation drives, and health education campaigns aimed at improving the well-being of their members and surrounding communities.

Health promotion, which involves enabling individuals to increase control over their health and its determinants, has become a critical strategy in addressing public health challenges such as infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and poor health-seeking behavior. Pentecostal churches contribute to health promotion through sermons, counseling sessions, and community programs that encourage healthy lifestyles, moral discipline, and preventive health practices. For example, teachings on avoiding substance abuse, maintaining personal hygiene, and practicing sexual morality can have significant implications for public health outcomes.

Moreover, Pentecostal churches serve as important channels for disseminating health information, especially in communities where trust in government institutions may be limited. Religious leaders often hold significant influence over their congregants, and their endorsement of health interventions—such as vaccination campaigns, HIV/AIDS awareness, and maternal health programs—can greatly enhance acceptance and participation. Studies have shown that faith-based organizations can improve health outcomes by bridging gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved areas.

However, the role of Pentecostal churches in healthcare is not limited to physical health alone. These churches also address psychological and emotional well-being through counseling, prayer, and support groups. This holistic approach aligns with the broader understanding of health as encompassing spiritual well-being. In many cases, individuals turn to religious institutions for comfort, hope, and coping mechanisms during illness or health crises.

Despite these positive contributions, the involvement of Pentecostal churches in healthcare delivery and health promotion is complex and multifaceted. While some churches actively collaborate with healthcare professionals and organizations, others may emphasize spiritual healing in ways that could influence members’ attitudes toward conventional medical care. This dual role highlights the need for a balanced understanding of how Pentecostal churches contribute to and interact with the formal healthcare system.

Given the significant presence and influence of Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, it is essential to examine their role in healthcare delivery and health promotion. Such an investigation will provide insights into how these institutions contribute to public health efforts and how their activities can be better integrated into the broader healthcare system.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The healthcare system in Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, shortage of medical personnel, high cost of healthcare services, and limited access to quality care, particularly for low-income populations. In Lagos State, despite being more developed than many other regions, these challenges persist due to rapid population growth and increasing demand for healthcare services.

In response to these gaps, Pentecostal churches have increasingly become alternative and complementary providers of healthcare services. Through medical outreaches, health education programs, and spiritual support, these churches play a significant role in addressing the health needs of their members and communities. However, the extent and effectiveness of their contributions to healthcare delivery and health promotion remain insufficiently studied.

One major concern is the lack of formal recognition and integration of Pentecostal churches into the healthcare system. While these churches provide valuable services, their activities are often unregulated and not systematically coordinated with public health initiatives. This can lead to inconsistencies in service delivery and missed opportunities for collaboration between religious institutions and healthcare providers.

Additionally, there are concerns about the quality and scope of healthcare services provided by some churches. While many churches organize professional medical outreaches involving qualified healthcare personnel, others may rely heavily on spiritual interventions without adequate medical input. This raises questions about the balance between spiritual and medical approaches to health and the potential implications for health outcomes.

Another critical issue is the influence of religious beliefs on health behavior. While Pentecostal teachings can promote positive health practices, they may also discourage the use of certain medical interventions or delay timely access to healthcare services. This dual influence creates a complex dynamic that requires careful examination.

Furthermore, there is a scarcity of empirical data on the role of Pentecostal churches in healthcare delivery and health promotion specifically within Lagos State. Most existing studies focus on general religious influences on health or are conducted in other regions, leaving a gap in localized research that reflects the unique context of Lagos.

Given these challenges, it is important to investigate how Pentecostal churches contribute to healthcare delivery and health promotion, the extent of their involvement, and the implications for public health. This study seeks to address these gaps by providing a comprehensive analysis of the role of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.

1.3 Research Questions

1. What roles do Pentecostal churches play in healthcare delivery in Lagos State?

3. What is the level of involvement of Pentecostal churches in organized healthcare programs?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of Pentecostal churches in healthcare delivery and health promotion in Lagos State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the healthcare services provided by Pentecostal churches.
2. Examine the health promotion activities carried out by these churches.
3. Assess the level of involvement of Pentecostal churches in healthcare delivery.
4. Evaluate the challenges associated with their role in healthcare and health promotion.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Pentecostal churches have no significant role in healthcare delivery and health promotion in Lagos State.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, examining their role in healthcare delivery and health promotion among their members and surrounding communities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Health Promotion: Activities aimed at improving health and preventing diseases.
