INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The experience of divine silence represents one of the most profound and enduring theological challenges confronting religious believers across generations. Throughout the history of faith traditions, individuals and communities have often encountered moments when God appears distant, unresponsive, or absent amid suffering, uncertainty, unanswered prayers, and existential crises. Within Christian theology, this phenomenon is commonly described as the “silence of God” or “divine hiddenness,” referring to situations where believers struggle to perceive God’s presence, intervention, or communication despite their commitment to prayer and faith. Divine silence raises fundamental questions about the nature of God, the reliability of faith, the meaning of suffering, and the relationship between divine sovereignty and human expectations.

The biblical tradition provides numerous accounts of individuals who experienced periods of divine silence yet continued their search for meaning and relationship with God. The Old Testament presents several narratives where faithful individuals expressed anguish over God’s apparent absence. For instance, the Psalmist repeatedly questioned God’s silence, asking, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1). Similarly, the prophet Habakkuk struggled with God’s seeming inactivity in the face of injustice, violence, and oppression, asking, “How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?” (Habakkuk 1:2). These passages demonstrate that experiences of divine silence are not necessarily signs of unbelief but can constitute significant moments within the journey of faith. Biblical faith often includes periods of uncertainty, waiting, lamentation, and trust despite the absence of immediate divine answers.

The theological significance of divine silence is further demonstrated in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. During His crucifixion, Jesus experienced what appeared to be abandonment by God, expressing the words of Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34). The crucifixion narrative challenges simplistic assumptions that genuine faith always results in immediate divine responses, protection from suffering, or visible manifestations of God’s power.

Early Christian thinkers interpreted divine silence as an opportunity for spiritual growth, purification, and deeper dependence on God. The tradition of Christian mysticism, for example, understood periods of spiritual darkness as moments where believers encounter God beyond human understanding. John of the Cross described such experiences as the “dark night of the soul,” where God appears hidden but is believed to be working in deeper ways within the believer’s spiritual transformation (John of the Cross, 1991). Similarly, Augustine of Hippo argued that human beings often misunderstand divine purposes because God’s wisdom transcends human perception (Augustine, 1998).

In contemporary theology, divine silence has become increasingly connected with broader discussions concerning suffering, evil, human freedom, and religious doubt. The question of why God appears silent in situations of extreme suffering has been central to theological debates on the problem of evil. Alvin Plantinga argues that the existence of suffering does not necessarily contradict belief in an all-powerful and loving God because human freedom and divine purposes may involve realities beyond immediate human understanding (Plantinga, 1974). However, for many believers, particularly those experiencing personal tragedies, social injustices, economic hardship, or unanswered prayers, theoretical explanations may not fully resolve the emotional and spiritual consequences of perceived divine silence.

The Nigerian Christian context provides a significant environment for examining the theology of silence because religious faith occupies a central position in the social and personal lives of many Nigerians. Christianity in Nigeria has experienced remarkable growth, particularly through Pentecostal, Charismatic, and Evangelical movements that emphasise prayer, divine intervention, healing, miracles, prosperity, and personal encounters with God. Scholars such as Matthew Hassan Kukah and Ogbu Kalu have highlighted the strong influence of Christianity on Nigerian identity, social structures, and interpretations of everyday experiences (Kalu, 2008; Kukah, 1999).

However, the strong emphasis on divine intervention within many Nigerian Christian communities has also created particular expectations regarding how believers perceive God’s response to human needs. Many Christians expect prayer to produce visible outcomes, such as healing from sickness, financial breakthrough, employment opportunities, marital restoration, protection from danger, and deliverance from spiritual attacks. Consequently, when such expectations are unmet, some believers experience spiritual confusion, disappointment, frustration, and even crisis of faith. The silence of God becomes not merely a theological question but a deeply personal and existential struggle.

The Nigerian socio-economic and political environment further intensifies experiences of divine silence among Christians. Persistent challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, poverty, corruption, communal conflicts, health crises, and social inequality have caused many believers to question why God appears silent amid human suffering. For Christians who interpret their faith through the expectation of divine protection and intervention, prolonged hardship may create tension between theological beliefs about God’s goodness and their lived realities. This tension often produces what scholars describe as a “faith crisis,” where individuals struggle to reconcile religious convictions with experiences that appear inconsistent with divine promises.

The phenomenon of faith crisis resulting from divine silence has received increasing attention within contemporary pastoral theology. Richard Rohr argues that spiritual maturity often involves moving beyond simplistic understandings of God toward a deeper awareness of divine presence even within uncertainty and suffering (Rohr, 2019). Similarly, Walter Brueggemann emphasises the importance of biblical lament as a legitimate expression of faith rather than a rejection of God (Brueggemann, 2014). According to this perspective, questioning God during periods of silence may represent an authentic relationship with God because lament assumes that God remains the ultimate source of hope and meaning.

Despite these theological perspectives, many Nigerian Christian communities have limited frameworks for addressing experiences of divine silence. Some religious teachings may unintentionally present an overly simplistic relationship between faith and positive outcomes, suggesting that sufficient faith, prayer, or spiritual commitment should always produce immediate divine intervention. Such approaches may create feelings of guilt among believers experiencing unanswered prayers, causing them to interpret divine silence as personal failure, spiritual weakness, or divine rejection. Consequently, there is a need for theological reflection that provides a balanced understanding of divine silence within Christian spirituality.

The theology of silence therefore seeks to explore how believers understand God’s apparent absence while maintaining faith in divine presence and sovereignty. Rather than viewing silence exclusively as abandonment, theological reflection considers whether divine silence may function as a space for spiritual development, deeper trust, personal transformation, and renewed understanding of God. The study of divine silence requires engagement with biblical narratives, theological traditions, and contemporary experiences of Christians who encounter moments of uncertainty.

For Nigerian Christians, particularly within contemporary religious contexts characterised by strong expectations of miracles and divine intervention, examining divine silence is essential for developing a more mature theology of faith. Such a study provides an opportunity to understand how believers navigate moments when God appears silent and how these experiences influence their spiritual identity, theological beliefs, and relationship with God. It also contributes to pastoral approaches that acknowledge human suffering while offering meaningful theological responses to doubt, disappointment, and spiritual struggle.

Therefore, this study, titled “The Theology of Silence: A Biblical and Contemporary Study of Divine Silence and Human Faith Crisis among Nigerian Christians,” seeks to examine the biblical foundations of divine silence, explore theological interpretations of God’s apparent absence, and investigate how Nigerian Christians experience and respond to faith crises arising from perceived divine silence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Christian faith is fundamentally built upon the belief that God is present, communicative, loving, and actively involved in human affairs. Scripture presents God as one who hears prayers, responds to human needs, guides His people, and reveals Himself through various means (Jeremiah 33:3; Hebrews 1:1–2). However, the lived experience of many believers often includes periods where God appears silent despite persistent prayers, spiritual commitment, and dependence on divine intervention. This apparent contradiction between theological belief in God’s presence and the human experience of divine absence creates a significant challenge for Christian faith and practice.

In Nigerian Christianity, this challenge has become increasingly visible due to the dominant emphasis on immediate divine responses, miracles, breakthroughs, and supernatural interventions. Many contemporary Christian teachings emphasise that faith should produce tangible results, particularly in areas such as health, finances, family challenges, and personal success. While such teachings provide hope and encouragement to many believers, they may also create unrealistic expectations about how God responds to human circumstances. When believers encounter prolonged suffering, unanswered prayers, or unexpected tragedies, they may experience confusion regarding God’s character and question the validity of their faith.

The problem becomes more complex when individuals interpret divine silence through inadequate theological frameworks. Some Christians assume that unanswered prayers indicate lack of faith, personal sin, spiritual weakness, or divine punishment. Such interpretations may intensify emotional suffering among believers already struggling with difficult circumstances. Instead of receiving theological support, individuals experiencing divine silence may encounter condemnation or simplistic explanations that fail to address the depth of their spiritual struggles.

Furthermore, Nigerian Christians frequently encounter social realities that challenge traditional assumptions about divine intervention. Issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, corruption, unemployment, illness, and social injustice raise difficult theological questions about why a powerful and loving God appears silent in situations requiring urgent intervention. These experiences create tension between religious expectations and everyday realities, contributing to spiritual frustration and faith crisis among some believers.

Although biblical narratives demonstrate that divine silence is a recurring theme in the faith journey, contemporary Christian discussions often give insufficient attention to this aspect of spirituality. Many theological and pastoral approaches focus more on victory, success, and divine provision while giving limited attention to suffering, waiting, lament, and spiritual uncertainty. This imbalance leaves many believers without adequate theological resources for interpreting moments when God appears silent.

The existing scholarly discussions on divine silence have largely emerged from Western theological contexts, philosophical debates on divine hiddenness, and classical Christian spirituality. However, limited attention has been given to how Nigerian Christians understand and negotiate divine silence within their specific cultural, religious, and socio-economic realities. The African Christian experience requires theological investigation that considers indigenous understandings of suffering, communal faith expressions, Pentecostal spirituality, and contemporary religious expectations.

Therefore, the problem addressed by this study is the inadequate theological understanding of divine silence among Nigerian Christians and its implications for human faith, spiritual stability, and Christian maturity. The study seeks to address the gap by examining biblical perspectives on divine silence, exploring contemporary theological interpretations, and analysing how Nigerian Christians experience and respond to periods when God appears silent.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the theology of silence from biblical and contemporary perspectives, with particular attention to how experiences of divine silence influence faith formation, spiritual struggles, and faith crises among Nigerian Christians. The study seeks to provide a theological understanding of why believers experience moments where God appears silent and how such experiences can be interpreted within the broader framework of Christian faith, suffering, hope, and spiritual maturity.

The study also aims to explore how Nigerian Christians perceive and respond to divine silence within a religious environment strongly influenced by expectations of miracles, answered prayers, and divine intervention. By examining biblical narratives, theological reflections, and contemporary Christian experiences, the study intends to develop a balanced understanding of divine silence that acknowledges both human struggles and the possibility of spiritual growth during periods of uncertainty.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. Examine the biblical foundations and theological meanings of divine silence within Christian Scripture.
2. Investigate historical and contemporary theological interpretations of God’s apparent silence and hiddenness.
3. Explore the relationship between experiences of divine silence and faith crisis among Nigerian Christians.
4. Examine the factors that contribute to perceptions of divine silence among Nigerian believers within contemporary religious contexts.

1.5 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the biblical foundations and theological meanings associated with divine silence?
2. How have Christian theologians historically and contemporarily interpreted experiences of God’s apparent silence?
3. In what ways does perceived divine silence contribute to faith crisis among Nigerian Christians?
4. What circumstances or experiences cause Nigerian Christians to perceive God as silent?

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it addresses one of the most challenging theological experiences within Christian spirituality: the experience of God’s silence. While Christian theology affirms that God is present and active in human affairs, many believers encounter moments where divine intervention appears absent. Understanding such experiences is essential for developing a mature theology that acknowledges the complexity of faith beyond moments of success, miracles, and answered prayers.

The study contributes to biblical scholarship by providing a deeper examination of biblical texts that address divine silence, lament, waiting, suffering, and human questioning. Passages such as Psalm 13, Psalm 22, Job’s suffering, Habakkuk’s complaint, and Christ’s cry of abandonment on the cross demonstrate that questioning God’s silence is not necessarily an expression of unbelief but can exist within authentic faith. By analysing these biblical accounts, the study highlights the importance of lament and perseverance as legitimate dimensions of Christian spirituality.

The study is also significant for systematic theology because it contributes to discussions surrounding divine hiddenness, the problem of evil, human suffering, and the nature of God’s relationship with humanity. The concept of divine silence challenges believers and theologians to reflect more deeply on questions concerning God’s sovereignty, love, communication, and human limitations in understanding divine purposes. The study therefore provides theological insights into how Christians can maintain faith even when immediate answers are absent.

Within the Nigerian Christian context, the study is significant because it responds to contemporary challenges arising from strong expectations of supernatural intervention. Nigerian Christianity, particularly within Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, has developed theological expressions that emphasise miracles, healing, prosperity, and breakthrough experiences. While these expressions have provided hope and spiritual encouragement to millions of believers, they may also create difficulties when individuals experience prolonged suffering or unanswered prayers. This study provides a theological framework that helps believers understand that faith is not only demonstrated through receiving divine answers but also through trusting God during seasons of uncertainty.

The study is valuable to pastors, church leaders, and Christian counsellors because it provides insights into how believers experiencing spiritual struggles can be supported. Many Christians who experience divine silence often suffer privately because they fear being judged as spiritually weak or lacking faith. A deeper understanding of divine silence can enable church leaders to develop more compassionate pastoral approaches that acknowledge doubt, suffering, and spiritual struggles as part of the human faith journey.

Furthermore, the study contributes to Christian discipleship by demonstrating that spiritual maturity involves learning to trust God beyond immediate circumstances. It challenges the assumption that God’s presence is measured only by visible blessings or supernatural interventions. Instead, it presents faith as a relationship characterised by trust, perseverance, obedience, and hope even during periods of uncertainty.

The research is also significant academically because it contributes to African Christian theology by examining divine silence from the perspective of Nigerian believers. African theological studies have often focused on themes such as prosperity theology, spiritual warfare, healing, and inculturation; however, the experience of divine silence requires further exploration within African Christianity. This study provides an opportunity to understand how Nigerian Christians interpret suffering and perceived divine absence within their cultural and religious environment.

Finally, the study will serve as a resource for future researchers interested in biblical studies, pastoral theology, Christian spirituality, African theology, and contemporary religious experiences. It provides a foundation for further investigations into the relationship between theological beliefs and lived religious experiences among Christians in Nigeria and beyond.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the theology of silence from both biblical and contemporary perspectives, examining how divine silence affects human faith experiences among Nigerian Christians. The study is limited to theological exploration of divine silence, including biblical interpretations, historical Christian reflections, and contemporary understandings of God’s apparent absence.

The biblical aspect of the study examines selected Old and New Testament passages where individuals and communities experienced moments of divine silence. These include the experiences of Job, David in the Psalms, the prophet Habakkuk, the Israelites during periods of suffering, and Jesus Christ during His crucifixion. These biblical accounts provide theological foundations for understanding silence, suffering, lament, and faith.

The theological aspect focuses on major Christian interpretations of divine silence, including perspectives from classical theology, Christian mysticism, contemporary systematic theology, and pastoral theology. The study examines concepts such as divine hiddenness, spiritual dryness, suffering, human doubt, and faith development.

The contemporary aspect of the study focuses specifically on Nigerian Christians and how they experience and interpret divine silence within modern religious contexts. Attention is given to issues such as unanswered prayers, prolonged suffering, personal crises, economic difficulties, health challenges, insecurity, and other circumstances that may influence perceptions of God’s silence.

The study does not attempt to examine all Christian denominations in Nigeria or provide a complete sociological analysis of Nigerian Christianity. Rather, it focuses on theological understanding and lived experiences related to divine silence. While examples may be drawn from different Christian traditions, emphasis is placed on contemporary Nigerian Christian experiences generally.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Theology

Theology refers to the systematic study and interpretation of God, religious beliefs, doctrines, and the relationship between God and humanity. According to Alister McGrath, theology involves critical reflection on Christian beliefs and their meaning for human existence (McGrath, 2017). In this study, theology refers specifically to Christian reflection on the nature, meaning, and implications of divine silence.

Divine Silence

Divine silence refers to the experience or perception that God is absent, unresponsive, or does not communicate clearly despite human prayer, faith, or expectation. It does not necessarily imply that God is actually absent but describes the human experience of not perceiving divine response or intervention.

Theology of Silence

The theology of silence refers to theological reflection on the meaning, purpose, and implications of God’s apparent silence within the Christian faith. It examines how believers understand divine hiddenness, unanswered prayers, suffering, and periods of spiritual uncertainty.

Faith Crisis

Faith crisis refers to a period of spiritual struggle where individuals experience doubts, confusion, questioning, or uncertainty regarding their religious beliefs and relationship with God. In this study, faith crisis particularly refers to struggles arising from experiences where God appears silent amid personal or collective challenges.

Human Faith

Human faith refers to the trust, belief, and commitment individuals place in God despite circumstances that may challenge their understanding or expectations. Christian faith involves reliance on God’s character and promises even when immediate evidence or answers are unavailable.

Nigerian Christians

Nigerian Christians refer to individuals in Nigeria who identify with the Christian faith and participate in Christian beliefs, practices, worship communities, and theological traditions. The term includes believers from various Christian traditions within Nigeria.

Divine Hiddenness

Divine hiddenness refers to the philosophical and theological concept that God’s existence or presence is not always clearly evident to human beings. It explores questions concerning why God may remain hidden despite human desire for relationship and knowledge of Him.
