Project – The Role of Prayer in the Spiritual Growth of Christians: A Study of Selected Churches in Lagos State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Prayer occupies a central place in the Christian faith and has historically been regarded as one of the principal means through which Christians cultivate communion with God. Christianity is not merely a system of beliefs or doctrines but also a way of life in which believers are expected to develop a continuing relationship with God through faith, worship, obedience, Scripture, fellowship and prayer. Within this framework, prayer may be understood as an intentional act of communicating with God, expressing dependence upon Him, seeking His will, offering thanksgiving, confessing sins, interceding for others and responding to His presence. Consequently, prayer is not simply a means of presenting requests to God; it is also a spiritual practice through which Christians are formed and progressively transformed.

The biblical witness gives prayer a prominent position in the life of God’s people. In the Old Testament, prayer is evident in the lives of figures such as Abraham, Moses, Hannah, David, Daniel and others who repeatedly sought God in circumstances of need, thanksgiving, repentance and worship. The Psalms, in particular, contain numerous expressions of petition, lament, praise, confession and trust in God. In the New Testament, prayer continues to occupy an important position in the life of the early Christian community. Jesus Himself maintained a life of prayer and taught His disciples how to pray (Matt. 6:5–13; Luke 11:1–4). His prayer life is presented not as an occasional religious exercise but as a regular dimension of His relationship with the Father. The Gospel narratives repeatedly portray Jesus withdrawing to solitary places for prayer (Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16; 6:12).

The instruction of the Apostle Paul further demonstrates the importance of prayer in Christian existence. Believers are instructed to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17), to devote themselves to prayer (Col. 4:2), and to pray at all times in the Spirit (Eph. 6:18). These passages suggest that prayer is expected to become an enduring characteristic of Christian life rather than an activity reserved exclusively for emergencies or special religious occasions. Waaijman (2019), in his study of uninterrupted prayer, observes that the biblical command to pray continually can be understood not merely in terms of uninterrupted verbal activity but also in relation to an enduring relationship with God. In this sense, continuous prayer reflects an orientation of life toward God rather than simply the accumulation of hours spent speaking religious words.

Christian spiritual growth may consequently be understood as the progressive development of the believer into greater conformity to the character and purposes of Christ. Spiritual growth involves more than acquiring theological information. It includes the transformation of attitudes, character, conduct, relationships, values and patterns of life. McGrath (1999) treats Christian spirituality as a significant dimension of Christian theology concerned with how Christian beliefs are expressed and lived. Christian spirituality therefore connects theological conviction with practical Christian existence.

The concept of spiritual formation is also useful in understanding Christian growth. Spiritual formation refers broadly to the process through which a person’s inner and outer life is progressively shaped in accordance with Christian faith and the character of Christ. Willard (1998) emphasizes that spiritual formation involves the transformation of the person and that spiritual disciplines can function as practices through which Christians cooperate with God’s work of transformation. His treatment of spiritual disciplines includes practices such as prayer, solitude, fasting and Scripture memorization. Prayer therefore belongs within a broader framework of spiritual disciplines rather than being isolated from other aspects of Christian discipleship.

Prayer is particularly important because of its relational character. Unlike an activity undertaken merely to acquire religious knowledge, prayer directs the believer toward God Himself. Through prayer, Christians express dependence upon God, seek His guidance, confess their failures, receive assurance of His grace, intercede for others and cultivate awareness of His presence. Barus (2023), examining prayer and koinonia in the Gospel of John, describes prayer as central to the spirituality and ethical life of Christ’s disciples and highlights its relationship with Christian fellowship and communal identity.

Prayer also contributes to the formation of Christian identity. Koester (2015), in his examination of prayer in Revelation, argues that prayer is related to the formation and sustenance of Christian identity. Prayer is therefore not only an expression of what Christians already believe; it can also participate in shaping how Christians understand themselves, their community and their relationship with God.

Historically, Christian spirituality has treated prayer as one of the principal disciplines for cultivating spiritual maturity. The Christian tradition contains numerous forms of prayer, including personal prayer, corporate prayer, intercessory prayer, thanksgiving, confession, petition, meditation and contemplative prayer. Finney and Malony (1985), in their review of empirical studies of Christian prayer, identify different areas of research concerning prayer, including the development of concepts of prayer, motivations for prayer, verbal prayer and contemplative prayer. Their review demonstrates that prayer has been examined not only theologically but also psychologically and empirically.

The relationship between prayer and spiritual formation is especially significant in Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity. Prayer occupies a highly visible place in many Pentecostal communities through prayer meetings, prayer vigils, intercessory groups, fasting and prayer programmes, deliverance services and personal devotional practices. In such settings, prayer may be understood as an avenue for communion with God, spiritual empowerment, guidance, healing, deliverance and participation in God’s purposes.

The Nigerian Christian context provides a particularly important setting for examining prayer. Christianity has a strong public and institutional presence in Nigeria, and Pentecostal and Charismatic churches have become influential in the religious landscape. Nigerian churches exhibit diverse forms of prayer, ranging from quiet personal devotion to highly expressive corporate prayer. Research has shown that prayer practices within Nigerian Pentecostalism may also involve bodily, musical and communal dimensions. Ajose (2025), for example, examined prayer chants within Nigerian Pentecostal spirituality and found that prayer chants can shape how practitioners perceive and experience the sacred.

Prayer in Nigerian Pentecostalism may also be associated with spiritual warfare and deliverance. Richman (2020), in her study of prayer in a Nigerian deliverance church, examines the embodied and performative character of prayer and shows how prayer can become closely connected with Pentecostal understandings of spiritual conflict. Similarly, Igboin (2024) examines “violent prayer” within the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries during the COVID-19 pandemic, showing how prayer functioned within a Nigerian Pentecostal community as a response to fear, uncertainty and perceived spiritual threats.

These studies demonstrate that prayer has multiple dimensions in Nigerian Christianity. It can be devotional, communal, therapeutic, intercessory, spiritual-warfare oriented and identity-forming. However, the existence of extensive prayer activities within churches does not automatically establish that prayer is producing corresponding spiritual growth in individual Christians. A church may organize numerous prayer programmes while individual members may differ considerably in their understanding, frequency, motivation and personal experience of prayer.

This distinction is important because Christian spiritual growth should not be measured simply by the number of prayer meetings attended or the length of time spent in prayer. Spiritual maturity should also be reflected in qualities such as obedience to God, love for others, forgiveness, humility, self-control, perseverance, holiness, biblical understanding and Christ-like character. The New Testament associates spiritual maturity with the fruit of the Spirit, growth in Christian character and conformity to Christ (Gal. 5:22–23; Eph. 4:13–15; Col. 1:9–10).

Consequently, prayer should not be viewed as a mechanical formula through which Christians automatically obtain desired outcomes. Biblical prayer includes submission to God’s will. Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane illustrates this principle when He prayed concerning His impending suffering while submitting Himself to the Father’s will (Matt. 26:36–46). Similarly, Paul teaches believers to make their requests known to God while combining prayer with thanksgiving (Phil. 4:6–7). Prayer therefore involves both petition and spiritual formation. It can change circumstances according to God’s providence, but it can also transform the person who prays.

This understanding becomes especially relevant in an urban environment such as Lagos State. Lagos is a major Nigerian metropolitan centre characterized by cultural diversity, economic activity, rapid urbanization, demanding work schedules and a highly competitive social environment. Within such a setting, Christians may encounter numerous pressures relating to employment, education, family responsibilities, finances, relationships, health, security and personal aspirations. These circumstances can influence both the reasons why people pray and the ways in which they understand prayer.

Lagos also has a significant concentration of churches representing different Christian traditions. Studies of Lagos have demonstrated the importance of Pentecostal and neo-Pentecostal Christianity in the city’s religious and social landscape. Millington (2024), for example, examines the ways neo-Pentecostal Christianity has become intertwined with the urban environment of Lagos, including the provision of various social and institutional infrastructures. The religious diversity of Lagos therefore makes it an appropriate context for investigating how Christians understand and practise prayer and whether they perceive prayer as contributing to their spiritual development.

The question of prayer and spiritual growth is also important because contemporary Christian practice may sometimes emphasize the immediate results of prayer more strongly than the character-forming dimension of prayer. In some contexts, prayer may be presented primarily as a means of obtaining material prosperity, physical healing, protection, promotion or victory over perceived enemies. While petition and intercession are legitimate biblical dimensions of prayer, an exclusive emphasis on material or immediate outcomes may obscure prayer’s deeper role in cultivating communion with God and Christian character.

Recent Nigerian scholarship has called attention to the diverse forms and theological emphases associated with prayer. Augustus, Alaka-Osinowo and Olabode (2025), for example, critically examine warfare prayer within Nigerian Pentecostal churches and note its prominence as a prayer technique among Nigerian Pentecostal Christians. Such research makes it necessary to distinguish between prayer as a religious activity and prayer as a means of spiritual formation. The fact that Christians pray frequently does not by itself answer the question of whether such prayer contributes to spiritual maturity.

Furthermore, prayer should be examined alongside other spiritual practices. Scripture reading, worship, fasting, fellowship, Christian service and obedience are all important dimensions of Christian discipleship. Willard (1998) argues that spiritual disciplines are practices through which Christians participate in a process of transformation. Prayer is therefore best understood as part of a wider pattern of discipleship.

The relationship between prayer and spiritual growth consequently deserves empirical investigation within local church contexts. Cameron (2021), in a study of prayer and spiritual formation among Pentecostal Christians in South Africa, notes that empirical research specifically examining prayer and spiritual formation within Pentecostal communities has been limited. His study conceptualizes prayer as a religious practice through which Christians may grow spiritually and mature in faith. This provides a useful basis for examining the same broad relationship within selected churches in Lagos State.

The present study therefore focuses on The Role of Prayer in the Spiritual Growth of Christians: A Study of Selected Churches in Lagos State. The study seeks to examine the place of prayer in the lives of Christians, the forms of prayer commonly practised, the motivations that influence prayer, and the perceived relationship between prayer and spiritual maturity. It also seeks to determine whether regular and meaningful prayer is associated with such dimensions of spiritual growth as increased faith, dependence upon God, biblical obedience, Christian character, emotional stability, love for others and commitment to Christian service.

The study is important because the effectiveness of Christian ministry should not be evaluated only by the size of congregations, number of programmes or frequency of prayer meetings. The deeper concern of Christian discipleship is whether believers are being transformed into mature followers of Christ. An examination of prayer and spiritual growth can therefore provide useful information for pastors, church leaders, Christian educators and individual believers who seek to develop more effective approaches to Christian spiritual formation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Prayer is widely recognized as an essential practice of Christian faith, and churches across Lagos State devote considerable attention to prayer through Sunday services, weekday prayer meetings, prayer vigils, fasting programmes, intercessory groups, personal devotion and special prayer gatherings. The biblical injunction to pray continually (1 Thess. 5:17) and to remain devoted to prayer (Col. 4:2) reinforces the importance of this practice in Christian discipleship.

However, the widespread practice of prayer raises an important question: Does frequent participation in prayer necessarily result in spiritual growth? The answer cannot simply be assumed. Christians may pray frequently for different reasons and with different understandings of what prayer means. Some may pray primarily for material provision, healing, protection, success, employment, marriage or deliverance. Others may regard prayer primarily as communion with God, spiritual discipline, thanksgiving, confession, intercession and submission to God’s will.

The problem becomes more complex when prayer is evaluated principally by its external manifestations. Long prayer sessions, loud prayers, repeated declarations, fasting and participation in prayer vigils may indicate commitment, but they do not necessarily demonstrate spiritual maturity. A Christian may participate actively in prayer programmes and yet continue to struggle with unforgiveness, dishonesty, pride, hatred, lack of self-control, poor relationships or disobedience to biblical teaching. Conversely, another Christian may practise quiet and less visible prayer while demonstrating substantial spiritual maturity in character and conduct.

There is therefore a need to distinguish prayer activity from spiritual transformation. The central concern of Christian spirituality is not simply whether believers pray but what prayer produces in their relationship with God and in their daily lives. McGrath (1999) places Christian spirituality within the lived expression of Christian faith, while Willard (1998) connects spiritual disciplines with the transformation of the person.

Another problem concerns the different theological emphases placed upon prayer within contemporary Nigerian churches. Nigerian Pentecostal and Charismatic churches often give prayer a prominent place in spiritual warfare, deliverance, healing and the pursuit of divine intervention. Research on Nigerian Pentecostal prayer demonstrates the importance of these dimensions. Richman (2020) examines prayer as an embodied practice within a Nigerian deliverance church, while Igboin (2024) demonstrates how prayer was used within Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries as a response to crisis and perceived spiritual threats.

These emphases are not necessarily inconsistent with Christian spirituality, since the Bible contains prayers for protection, deliverance, healing and divine intervention. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that an exclusive concentration on warfare, material needs or immediate answers may cause believers to understand prayer primarily as a means of obtaining benefits from God rather than as a practice of knowing God and being transformed by Him.

The problem is also evident in the possibility of separating prayer from other dimensions of discipleship. If prayer is regarded as an end in itself, Christians may assume that lengthy prayer automatically signifies spiritual maturity. Yet the New Testament presents Christian maturity in broader terms, including love, holiness, obedience, spiritual fruit, perseverance, service and conformity to Christ (Gal. 5:22–23; Eph. 4:13–15). Prayer should therefore contribute to, rather than replace, these dimensions of Christian life.

There is also a contextual research gap. Existing scholarship has examined Christian prayer from biblical, theological, psychological and sociological perspectives. Finney and Malony (1985) reviewed empirical studies of Christian prayer, while Koester (2015) explored prayer and Christian identity in Revelation. Barus (2023) examined prayer and koinonia in the Fourth Gospel. Within African and Nigerian contexts, scholars have also investigated Pentecostal prayer practices, including prayer chants, spiritual warfare and deliverance prayer (Ajose, 2025; Igboin, 2024; Richman, 2020).

Nevertheless, there remains a need for a focused study that examines the relationship between prayer and the spiritual growth of ordinary Christians within selected churches in Lagos State. In particular, there is a need to investigate whether Christians who engage more consistently in prayer demonstrate or perceive greater levels of spiritual growth and what dimensions of spiritual growth they associate with prayer.

The problem of the study can therefore be summarized in the following question: To what extent does prayer contribute to the spiritual growth of Christians in selected churches in Lagos State?

This broad problem gives rise to further questions. What forms of prayer are commonly practised by Christians in the selected churches? What motivates Christians to pray? How frequently do they engage in personal and corporate prayer? How do Christians understand spiritual growth? What relationship do they perceive between prayer and spiritual maturity? Does regular prayer influence Christian character, faith, obedience, emotional stability, relationships and commitment to Christian service?

These questions justify the need for the present study. The research seeks to move beyond the assumption that prayer automatically produces spiritual maturity and instead examine the relationship through systematic investigation among Christians in selected churches in Lagos State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of prayer in the spiritual growth of Christians in selected churches in Lagos State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. Examine the biblical and theological understanding of prayer and spiritual growth.
  2. Identify the major forms of prayer practised by Christians in the selected churches.
  3. Examine the frequency and patterns of personal and corporate prayer among Christians in the selected churches.
  4. Investigate the major motivations that influence Christians to engage in prayer.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What is the biblical and theological understanding of prayer in relation to Christian spiritual growth?
  2. What forms of prayer are commonly practised by Christians in the selected churches in Lagos State?
  3. How frequently do Christians in the selected churches engage in personal and corporate prayer?
  4. What are the major motivations for prayer among Christians in the selected churches?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the appropriate level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between the frequency of prayer and the spiritual growth of Christians in selected churches in Lagos State.

H₀: Regularity of prayer does not significantly predict the level of spiritual growth among Christians in selected churches in Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to several groups.

Church leaders and pastors: The findings may help pastors and church leaders understand how members perceive prayer and its relationship with spiritual maturity. The findings may also assist church leaders in designing prayer programmes that go beyond petition and spiritual warfare to include thanksgiving, confession, intercession, biblical meditation, worship and personal communion with God.

Christian believers: The study may encourage Christians to understand prayer not merely as a means of asking God for material or physical benefits but also as an important practice of discipleship and spiritual transformation. It may encourage believers to develop consistent personal prayer lives and to connect prayer with obedience, Scripture, character formation and Christian service.

Theological educators: The findings may contribute to theological discussions concerning Christian spirituality, prayer and discipleship. It may provide contextual material for courses in practical theology, Christian spirituality, pastoral theology and religious studies.

Church-based Christian educators: Sunday school teachers, discipleship coordinators and Christian education departments may use the findings to develop teaching programmes that help believers understand the relationship between prayer and spiritual maturity.

Researchers: The study may serve as a reference point for future studies on prayer, spirituality, Pentecostalism, Christian formation and religious practice in Nigeria. It may also encourage comparative studies involving different denominations, age groups, geographical areas and Christian traditions.

Christian ministries: Ministries involved in prayer, discipleship, counselling and spiritual formation may benefit from understanding the practical challenges that Christians face in maintaining consistent prayer lives.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the role of prayer in the spiritual growth of Christians in selected churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The study will concentrate on Christians who are members or regular participants of the selected churches. It will examine prayer in terms of personal prayer, corporate prayer, intercessory prayer, thanksgiving, petition, confession, prayer meetings and other recognized Christian prayer practices.

The study will also examine spiritual growth in terms of selected indicators such as faith in God, obedience to Scripture, Christian character, love for others, forgiveness, self-control, commitment to Christian service and perceived closeness to God.

The study does not attempt to examine every aspect of Christian spirituality. Practices such as fasting, Bible study, worship, Christian fellowship and service will be considered primarily where they relate directly to prayer and spiritual growth.

Geographically, the study is restricted to selected churches in Lagos State. The findings should therefore be interpreted within the context of the selected churches and should not automatically be generalized to every Christian church in Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Prayer: For the purpose of this study, prayer refers to the intentional communication and communion of Christians with God through activities such as worship, thanksgiving, confession, petition, intercession, meditation and supplication.

Spiritual Growth: Spiritual growth refers to the progressive development of a Christian in faith, character, obedience, relationship with God and conformity to the teachings and character of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Maturity: Spiritual maturity refers to a relatively advanced level of Christian development demonstrated through stable faith, Christ-like character, obedience to God’s Word, love, self-control, forgiveness, perseverance and responsible Christian living.

Christian: In this study, a Christian refers to a person who professes faith in Jesus Christ and identifies with the Christian faith and a Christian church.

Personal Prayer: Personal prayer refers to prayer undertaken individually by a Christian without the immediate participation of a corporate congregation.

Corporate Prayer: Corporate prayer refers to prayer undertaken by Christians collectively, such as during church services, prayer meetings, vigils or intercessory gatherings.

Intercessory Prayer: Intercessory prayer refers to prayer offered on behalf of other persons, groups, communities, the church or society.

Spiritual Formation: Spiritual formation refers to the process through which the Christian’s beliefs, attitudes, character and practices are progressively shaped toward greater conformity to Christ.

Selected Churches: Selected churches refer to the churches that will be deliberately chosen as the study locations within Lagos State according to the research design and sampling procedures.

1.9 Theoretical/Conceptual Orientation of the Study

The study is conceptually anchored in the understanding of prayer as a Christian spiritual discipline and in the broader concept of spiritual formation.

The spiritual-discipline perspective emphasizes intentional Christian practices that facilitate spiritual development. Willard (1998) argues that spiritual disciplines can contribute to the transformation of the whole person. Prayer is therefore considered one of the practices through which Christians intentionally orient themselves toward God and participate in the process of spiritual transformation.

The study also draws from McGrath’s (1999) understanding of Christian spirituality as an expression of Christian faith in lived experience. From this perspective, spirituality should not be separated from everyday Christian conduct. Prayer should consequently have implications for the believer’s relationships, decisions, character, values and service.

The conceptual assumption underlying this study is that prayer may influence spiritual growth through several possible pathways. Regular prayer can encourage greater dependence upon God; dependence can encourage faith; prayer involving confession can encourage repentance; intercessory prayer can encourage compassion and concern for others; thanksgiving can encourage gratitude; and prayer that seeks God’s will can encourage obedience and spiritual discernment.

However, the study does not assume that prayer operates mechanically or independently of other factors. Spiritual growth may also be influenced by Scripture reading, Christian fellowship, worship, discipleship, pastoral guidance, personal circumstances and individual commitment. Prayer is therefore treated as an important factor within a broader process of Christian formation.

1.10 Organization of the Study

The research project will be organized into five chapters.
