INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The contemporary business environment is increasingly characterized by rapid digital transformation, growing volumes of organizational data, and the need for businesses to make timely decisions based on accurate and accessible information. Enterprise systems have consequently become important tools for integrating organizational functions such as accounting, finance, human resources, procurement, inventory, sales, customer management, and operations into interconnected information environments. The emergence of cloud computing has further transformed enterprise systems by enabling organizations to obtain computing resources, applications, storage, and information services through internet-based platforms rather than relying exclusively on locally installed infrastructure. Gupta, Seetharaman, and Raj (2013) observe that cloud computing has become increasingly relevant to small and medium-sized businesses because of its convenience, accessibility, scalability, and ability to support organizational information sharing and collaboration. Similarly, Sultan (2009) argues that cloud computing provides organizations with opportunities to access sophisticated information technologies without necessarily bearing the full cost and complexity associated with traditional in-house infrastructure.
Cloud-based enterprise systems represent an important development in the way businesses create, store, process, retrieve, and share organizational information. Unlike traditional on-premise systems in which data and applications may be restricted to particular computers, servers, or physical locations, cloud-based systems can allow authorized users to access organizational information through internet-connected devices from different locations. This characteristic can be particularly valuable for medium-sized businesses whose employees and managers may require access to operational and financial information beyond conventional office environments. Cloud services can also facilitate software updates, centralized data storage, backup, collaboration, and scalability. Evaluating the benefits of cloud computing among smaller businesses, Mhlanga and Moloi (2021) note that cloud technologies can improve access to ICT services while reducing the need for organizations to maintain extensive in-house technological infrastructure. More recent Nigerian evidence by Ojobi, Mohammed, and Akoso (2026) also indicates that cloud-based data accessibility, particularly real-time access and remote collaboration, is relevant to the operational efficiency of Nigerian SMEs.
The relevance of cloud-based enterprise systems becomes more significant in medium-sized businesses because such organizations often operate between the resource limitations of smaller firms and the complex information requirements of large corporations. Medium-sized businesses may have multiple departments, branches, employees, suppliers, customers, and business processes that require coordinated information management. However, they may not possess the financial and technical resources of large enterprises to maintain sophisticated in-house enterprise information infrastructure. Cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), accounting systems, inventory platforms, and related enterprise applications may therefore provide a means of obtaining integrated technological capabilities without extensive investments in physical servers and specialized infrastructure. Usman, Ahmad, and Zakaria (2019), in their study of Nigerian SMEs, examined the determinants of cloud-based ERP adoption and emphasized the relevance of innovation characteristics and technological, organizational, and environmental factors in understanding cloud ERP adoption among Nigerian businesses.
The Nigerian business environment provides a particularly important context for examining cloud-based enterprise systems because businesses operate within an environment where technological infrastructure, internet connectivity, cost, technical expertise, security, privacy, and trust can influence digital technology adoption. Earlier Nigerian research has demonstrated that although businesses recognize the potential benefits of cloud computing, adoption can be constrained by concerns relating to security, privacy, infrastructure, reliability, payment arrangements, government policies, and trust. Otuka, Pimenidis, and Preston (2014), examining cloud computing services among SMEs in Nigeria, identified infrastructure, government policies, security, trust, reliability, payment, and service-provider issues among the challenges affecting cloud computing use. Similarly, Omotunde et al. (2015), in a study of small and medium-scale businesses in Nigeria, found that businesses were adopting cloud computing but that security and privacy remained important concerns, while greater awareness was needed to improve utilization of cloud technologies.
Cloud adoption is therefore not simply a question of whether a business has access to cloud technology; it also concerns whether the technology can provide reliable, secure, usable, and accessible information to authorized organizational users. Research on cloud adoption among SMEs indicates that factors such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, absorptive capacity, security and privacy, and perceived trust can influence adoption decisions. Alshamaila, Papagiannidis, and Li (2013) demonstrate that organizational and environmental factors can shape cloud computing adoption among SMEs, while Gupta et al. (2013) found that security, privacy, convenience, and reliability were important considerations for smaller businesses. In a developing-country context, Adebayo et al. (2020) found that cloud adoption can positively affect organizational performance and agility, suggesting that cloud technology may contribute to business responsiveness when it is appropriately implemented. These findings imply that the usefulness of cloud-based enterprise systems depends not merely on technological availability but also on how effectively businesses integrate them into their information-management processes.
Despite the growing adoption and potential benefits of cloud technologies, there remains a need to examine the specific relationship between cloud-based enterprise systems and data accessibility among medium-sized businesses in particular Nigerian business locations. Existing Nigerian studies have addressed cloud computing awareness, adoption, challenges, and cloud ERP determinants, while international research has examined cloud adoption and organizational performance. However, relatively less attention has been given specifically to how cloud-based enterprise systems affect the accessibility of organizational data among medium-sized businesses operating in a major commercial environment such as Ikeja, Lagos State. This is important because the availability of cloud systems does not automatically guarantee timely, reliable, secure, and convenient access to organizational data. Recent evidence from Nigerian SMEs suggests that cloud-based data accessibility can contribute to operational efficiency, while earlier research continues to identify security, infrastructure, skills, and trust as significant challenges. Therefore, this study seeks to examine Cloud-Based Enterprise Systems and Data Accessibility in Medium-Sized Businesses: A Study of Selected Firms in Ikeja, Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing volume and importance of business data have created a need for organizations to establish information systems through which managers and employees can obtain relevant information promptly. Traditional information systems that depend heavily on physical records, isolated computer systems, or locally hosted databases may create difficulties where information must be accessed across departments, branches, or locations. Although cloud-based enterprise systems offer the possibility of centralized storage, remote access, collaboration, and improved information availability, the actual benefits experienced by businesses may vary considerably. Gupta et al. (2013) found that smaller businesses considered convenience and ease of use important in cloud adoption, but also identified reliability, security, and privacy as significant concerns. Thus, the existence of cloud technology within a business does not necessarily mean that organizational data is consistently accessible, reliable, or available to authorized users when required.
A second problem concerns the technological and organizational challenges that may prevent medium-sized businesses from obtaining the full data-accessibility benefits of cloud-based enterprise systems. Cloud-dependent businesses require reliable internet connectivity, appropriate devices, adequate technical skills, secure authentication arrangements, suitable organizational processes, and dependable service providers. In Nigeria, these requirements can present practical difficulties. Otuka et al. (2014) identified infrastructure, security, reliability, trust, government policy, and service-provider issues as important challenges associated with cloud computing among Nigerian SMEs. Omotunde et al. (2015) similarly found that security and privacy were major concerns among Nigerian small and medium-scale businesses using or considering cloud computing. These challenges can potentially affect whether employees can access business data consistently and whether managers can rely on cloud-based information for operational and strategic decisions.
A third problem is that the benefits of cloud-based enterprise systems may differ according to the characteristics and technological readiness of individual businesses. Some organizations may use cloud applications primarily for accounting or storage, while others may integrate cloud ERP, CRM, inventory, human-resource, sales, and financial applications into a broader enterprise system. The extent to which these systems are integrated may influence how easily information moves across organizational units and how quickly employees can obtain the information they need. Usman et al. (2019) found that cloud-based ERP adoption among Nigerian SMEs needs to be understood through technological, organizational, and environmental factors rather than through technology alone. Similarly, recent research on cloud-ERP adoption identifies system quality, data accessibility, security, top-management support, vendor lock-in, competitive pressure, and regulatory conditions as relevant factors in organizational cloud ERP decisions. Consequently, there is a need to establish whether the use of cloud-based enterprise systems is actually associated with improved accessibility of business data among medium-sized firms in Ikeja.
A fourth problem relates to the limited empirical evidence specifically connecting cloud-based enterprise systems with data accessibility among medium-sized businesses in Ikeja, Lagos State. Existing Nigerian studies have provided valuable evidence on general cloud adoption, challenges, awareness, and cloud ERP adoption, while a recent Nigerian study in Abuja has directly examined cloud-based data accessibility and operational efficiency. However, differences in business environment, location, organizational characteristics, infrastructure, and technology-use patterns mean that findings from other locations cannot automatically be generalized to medium-sized businesses in Ikeja. Ojobi et al. (2026) found that cloud-based data accessibility, particularly real-time access and remote collaboration, is relevant to operational efficiency among Nigerian SMEs, but their study was conducted in Abuja rather than Ikeja. This creates a contextual gap that warrants investigation in Lagos State’s major commercial and business environment. The present study therefore seeks to determine the extent to which cloud-based enterprise systems enhance data accessibility among selected medium-sized businesses in Ikeja, Lagos State.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between cloud-based enterprise systems and data accessibility among selected medium-sized businesses in Ikeja, Lagos State.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the extent of adoption of cloud-based enterprise systems among selected medium-sized businesses in Ikeja;
- determine the level of data accessibility among employees and managers of selected medium-sized businesses;
- examine the influence of cloud-based enterprise systems on real-time access to organizational data;
- determine the influence of cloud-based enterprise systems on remote access to organizational information
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- What is the extent of adoption of cloud-based enterprise systems among selected medium-sized businesses in Ikeja?
- What is the level of data accessibility among employees and managers of selected medium-sized businesses?
- To what extent do cloud-based enterprise systems influence real-time access to organizational data?
- To what extent do cloud-based enterprise systems influence remote access to organizational information?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between cloud-based enterprise systems and data accessibility among selected medium-sized businesses in Ikeja, Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to management of medium-sized businesses because it will provide empirical evidence on the extent to which cloud-based enterprise systems can improve access to organizational information. The findings may help managers understand whether investment in cloud-based enterprise applications produces practical benefits in areas such as real-time information access, remote working, information sharing, and managerial decision-making.
The study will also be useful to employees and organizational users of enterprise information systems. Improved accessibility of organizational data can enable employees to obtain relevant information without unnecessary delays and may facilitate collaboration among departments. The study will help identify technological or organizational factors that may limit employees’ ability to access required information through cloud-based systems.
The findings will be relevant to information technology managers, cloud-service providers, and enterprise-system developers. By identifying the relationship between cloud-based enterprise systems and data accessibility, the study may provide useful information for designing or selecting cloud solutions that are reliable, accessible, secure, scalable, and appropriate for medium-sized businesses.
The study will also be beneficial to government agencies and policymakers concerned with digital transformation, information technology, and the development of businesses in Nigeria. Evidence concerning cloud adoption and data accessibility may assist in developing policies and interventions that encourage responsible digital transformation while addressing infrastructure, cybersecurity, privacy, skills, and connectivity challenges identified in Nigerian cloud-computing research.
Finally, the study will contribute to academic knowledge in the fields of information systems, business administration, management information systems, cloud computing, and organizational technology. It will provide location-specific evidence from Ikeja, Lagos State, and may serve as a reference for future researchers examining cloud-based enterprise systems, data accessibility, digital transformation, and business performance among Nigerian organizations.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Cloud-Based Enterprise Systems and Data Accessibility in Medium-Sized Businesses, using selected firms in Ikeja, Lagos State as the study area.
Conceptually, the study will examine cloud-based enterprise systems as the independent variable and data accessibility as the dependent variable. Cloud-based enterprise systems will be considered in relation to the use of cloud-based ERP, accounting, customer relationship management, inventory, human-resource, sales, and other integrated organizational information applications.
Data accessibility will be examined in terms of timeliness of access, real-time access, remote access, availability of organizational information, information sharing, and ease of retrieving required business data.
The study is geographically limited to selected medium-sized businesses located in Ikeja, Lagos State. The firms selected for the study will be organizations that have adopted or use cloud-based enterprise applications in at least some aspects of their operations.
The study will focus primarily on employees, managers, administrators, and information-technology personnel who interact with the selected firms’ enterprise information systems and therefore have relevant knowledge of cloud-based systems and organizational data accessibility.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Cloud Computing: A computing model through which computing resources such as applications, storage, processing capacity, and other information technology services are provided over a network, usually the internet.
Cloud-Based Enterprise System: An enterprise information system hosted or delivered through cloud infrastructure that enables an organization to manage, process, store, and share business information through internet-connected devices.
Enterprise System: An integrated information system designed to support and coordinate multiple organizational functions and business processes.
Cloud-Based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP): An internet-based ERP system that integrates organizational functions such as finance, accounting, procurement, inventory, human resources, sales, and operations through cloud infrastructure.
Data Accessibility: The extent to which authorized employees or managers can obtain and use required organizational data when and where it is needed.
Real-Time Data Access: The ability of authorized users to obtain current or updated organizational information with little or no significant delay.
