INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Cross Over Services, often held on New Year’s Eve, are significant religious events in many Christian churches, aimed at spiritually transitioning members from one year to the next with prayer, thanksgiving, and prophetic declarations (Ojo, 2018). These services typically involve extended worship, teaching, fasting, prophetic messages, and prayers for divine intervention in the coming year. In Nigeria, especially in urban centers like Abuja, Cross Over Services have become high-profile gatherings that attract large congregations, reflecting their perceived spiritual importance among church members (Adeyemi & Oladipo, 2020).

The influence of Cross Over Services on church growth has drawn attention among religious scholars and church leaders. Church growth refers to an increase in congregation size, spiritual commitment of members, financial contributions, and active participation in church programs (McGavran, 1990; Edet, 2015). The symbolic and emotional impact of Cross Over Services can enhance members’ sense of belonging, reinforce commitment, and encourage evangelism, which are key factors contributing to church expansion.

In Abuja, churches across denominations organize Cross Over Services to attract both members and visitors. These events often feature guest ministers, music performances, and community outreach activities, generating enthusiasm that can lead to increased attendance, membership registration, and retention (Eze & Onyekwere, 2021). Beyond attendance, such services can influence tithes, offerings, and participation in other church programs, reflecting broader growth dimensions.

Despite the widespread practice, there is limited empirical research in Nigeria examining the direct impact of Cross Over Services on measurable church growth indicators, particularly within Abuja, where churches vary widely in size, denomination, and resources. This study, therefore, investigates how Cross Over Services influence church growth in three selected churches in Abuja, providing insights into their effectiveness as a tool for spiritual engagement and institutional expansion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Cross Over Services are widely celebrated in Nigerian churches, yet their actual impact on church growth remains unclear. While church leaders often attribute increases in attendance, membership, and participation to these services, critics argue that the effects may be temporary and largely ceremonial (Ojo, 2018; Edet, 2015).

Empirical evidence on the relationship between Cross Over Services and church growth is scarce, particularly in Abuja, where churches compete for congregants and visibility. Some congregants may attend services for entertainment, social interaction, or curiosity rather than spiritual engagement, raising questions about whether these events translate into sustainable church growth (Adeyemi & Oladipo, 2020).

Furthermore, despite anecdotal claims of increased tithes, membership, and community outreach post-Cross Over Services, systematic studies assessing attendance trends, membership registration, financial contributions, and spiritual engagement are limited. This knowledge gap constrains church leaders and religious organizations from making evidence-based decisions on resource allocation and program planning. Therefore, this study seeks to explore the impact of Cross Over Services on church growth in three selected churches in Abuja.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of Cross Over Services on church growth in Abuja. The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the effect of Cross Over Services on church attendance.

2. Determine the influence of Cross Over Services on church membership growth.

3. Evaluate the impact of Cross Over Services on congregational participation in church programs.

4. Examine the relationship between Cross Over Services and financial contributions (tithes and offerings) from church members.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How do Cross Over Services affect church attendance in the selected churches?

2. What is the relationship between Cross Over Services and church membership growth?

3. How do Cross Over Services influence congregational participation in church programs?

4. What impact do Cross Over Services have on financial contributions from church members?

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀ (Null Hypothesis): Cross Over Services do not have a significant impact on church growth in the selected churches in Abuja.

H₁ (Alternative Hypothesis): Cross Over Services have a significant positive impact on church growth in the selected churches in Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for the following reasons:

• For Church Leaders: Findings will guide planning and resource allocation for Cross Over Services to maximize growth outcomes.

• For Congregants: Understanding the spiritual and institutional impact of Cross Over Services can encourage meaningful participation.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on three selected churches in Abuja, representing different denominations. It examines the impact of Cross Over Services on attendance, membership, congregational participation, and financial contributions. The research is limited to these churches in Abuja and does not cover other Christian celebrations or churches outside the city.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Cross Over Service: A religious gathering held at the end of one year and the beginning of another, including prayers, worship, and spiritual reflection.

• Church Growth: An increase in congregation size, membership, participation in programs, and financial contributions.

• Church Members: Individuals who regularly participate in the activities of the church.

• Congregational Participation: Active involvement of church members in worship services, programs, and church activities.
